On October 14, 1862, Dr. John J. Moran, the examining physician for the draft in Frederick, was arrested on allegations he took bribes to exempt certain young men from military service. He was acquitted at a hearing in Washington on November 18. On October 14, 1978, Congressmen Goodloe E. Byron, who represented the Sixth District of Maryland for eight years and who was seeking re-election, was buried at The Antietam National Cemetery near Sharpsburg after services at All Saints Episcopal Church on West Church Street in Frederick. His widow, Beverly B. Byron, replaced him on the ballot and was elected to seven consecutive terms.
