On October 21, 1861, the Ladies Relief Society, which provided food, medicine, bandages and care for the wounded on both sides during The Civil War, was formally organized. On October 21, 1896, the Frederick and Middletown Railway went into full operation. On October 21, 1948, Dr. Andrew G. Truxal was installed as the third president of Hood College. Dr. Isaiah Bowman, president of Johns Hopkins University, delivered the inaugural address.
