On December 15, 1796, Brigadier General James Wilkinson, who would be court-martialed in Frederick in 1811, became commanding general of all U. S. Army forces upon the death of General Anthony Wayne, who died on this date. On December 15, 1858, Major Samuel Barnes, founder of The Examiner newspaper in Frederick, died.
