    3. On August 30, 1911, Clarence C. Carty, founder of the furniture store which bore his name at 48 East Patrick Street in Frederick, died. He was born January 8, 1847. The store closed in 1979 and the property is now home to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. On August 30, 1950, an F-84 fighter jet crashed into a field three miles east of Emmitsburg killing 2nd Lt. Michael E. Alkire, 22, of Washington, D.C.
