On July 12, 1757, a race between a large horse ridden by a man and a small mare ridden by a boy was conducted between Frederick and Annapolis. It took 11 hours and was won by the man and the horse. On July 12, 1861, John W. Baughman, editor of Frederick's Citizen newspaper, was arrested at Sandy Hook in Washington County, on a charge of treason. He was released on July 15 after taking the oath of loyalty to The Union. On July 12, 1903, the first services were held at the Grace Reformed Church's new edifice on East Second Street in Frederick. It was constructed by Harry W. Bowers for $15,000. On July 12, 1936, Reuben Hann, the last surviving veteran of the Civil War in Frederick City, was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. He died July 10. On July 12, 1991, the Monocacy National Battlefield was dedicated.
