    3. On February 13, 1777, Thomas Johnson of Frederick was elected the first governor of Maryland. On February 13, 1837, William Schley and William Cost Johnson, both prominent Fredericktonians, fought a duel at Alexandria, VA. Both were wounded but were reconciled on "The Field of Honor" and became good friends for the rest of their lives. On February 13, 1906, George Carlton Rhoderick, Sr., who began work at The Catoctin Whig, later The Valley Register, at the age of 9 and remained there for 51 years, died in Middletown. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining the Lutheran Church there. He was born May 5, 1835.
