On April 4, 1859, New York Congressman Daniel Sickles went on trial in Washington, D.C., for the murder of Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key. Sickles was the first defendant in American jurisprudence to use the temporary insanity defense and was acquitted on April 26. On April 4, 1872, Dr. E. L. Bowlus, who practiced medicine in the Middletown Valley, was born. On April 4, 1892, Maryland Governor Frank Brown signed the charter establishing Walkersville as an incorporated community. On April 4, 1923, the United Fire Company of Frederick decided to purchase a chemical wagon to fight fires. On April 4, 1976, Benjamin L. Shuff, chairman of the board of Farmers and Mechanics National Bank, died at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was born May 27, 1901, at Middlepoint, near Wolfsville. On April 4, 1992, officials of The Town of Walkersville re-enacted the signing of the town's charter by Governor Frank Brown on the 100th anniversary of that event.
