On January 17, 1753, Jacob Brunner deeded the Schifferstadt property to his son Elias, who, in 1756, built the house which is one of the best examples of early German architecture still extant. The house is located at the intersection of West Second Street and Rosemont Avenue in Frederick. On January 17, 1781, Sgt. Lawrence Everhart, of Middletown, saved the life of Col. William Washington at The Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina. On January 17, 1786, Dr. John Tyler, credited by some as having performed the first cataract operation in America, opened his practice in Frederick. On January 17, 1853, Frederick City passed an ordinance to erect 35 iron lamp posts at a cost of $35 each. On January 17, 1948, Dr. Joseph Henry Apple, Jr., president of Hood College for 41 years, died in Frederick. He was born August 4, 1865. On January 16, 1806, Alexander Contee Hanson, son of John Hanson (first President of The United States in Congress Assembled), a jurist and chancellor of Maryland, died in Annapolis. He was born October 22, 1749. On January 16, 1867, a local post of the Grand Army of The Republic was organized in Frederick. Edward Y. Goldsborough was elected "Grand Commander." On January 16, 1874, the Mt. Pleasant Charge of The Reformed Church was organized by the Classis of Maryland meeting in Walkersville at the Glade Reformed Church. On January 16, 1940, four armed men robbed The Walkersville Bank of $6,665.40, in a daring daylight holdup. They were arrested January 29, tried and convicted. On January 15, 1883, William Nelson Pendleton, former rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, and a general in the Confederate Army, died in Lexington, VA. He also designed an East Patrick Street bridge that replaced one destroyed by a Carroll Creek flood in October 1847. The bridge was used until 1926. On January 15, 1903, a special five-car train left Frederick, taking the members of the Society of Jesus from its Frederick Novitiate to a new one on the Hudson River in New York State, ending 150 years of their work in Frederick. On January 15, 1908, The Peoples Fire Insurance Company of Frederick began doing business. It had been incorporated on December 10, 1907. On January 15, 1977, President Gerald R. Ford visited Camp David just days before his presidency ended. On January 14, 1805, Dr. Daniel Zacharias, who was the pastor of the Evangelical Reformed Church on West Church Street in Frederick for nearly 38 years, was born near Clear Spring in Washington County. He died March 31, 1873. On January 14, 1817, "town" was dropped from Frederick Town by an Act of The General Assembly, and the town was incorporated. On January 14, 1837, the Alderman and Common Council of Frederick passed an ordinance dividing the "Town of Frederick into Fire Wards." On January 14, 1880, Charles A. Thomas and his family, who lived about a mile from Mt. Pleasant, narrowly escaped serious injuries in a violent confrontation with Asbury Stewart, a deaf mute farm hand in their employ. On January 14, 1894, the name "Thurmont" was officially adopted to replace the name of the northern Frederick County community of Mechanicstown. Town residents had preferred the name Blue Mountain City, but the U.S. Postal Service said that name was too long. On January 14, 1952, the new State Police barracks at the intersection of Rt. 40 and Baughman's Lane on Frederick's western edge was completed. On January 14, 1963, Harry J. Lebherz, who invented a bottle-capper that led to the formation of The Everedy Company, died at his home at 315 West Second Street in Frederick, at age 79. He was born October 13, 1883, in Waynesboro, PA. On January 14, 1989, a carved glass mural of early firemen was unveiled at the former Independent Hose Company building on West Church Street in downtown Frederick. On January 13, 1798, the first issue of The Key was published in Frederick by Dr. John D. Cary, who named the newspaper in honor of John Ross Key. It lasted but three years. On January 13, 1825, an Act of The General Assembly incorporated Emmitsburg. On January 13, 1868, Jesse H. Routson, for many years the superintendent of The Buckingham School south of Buckeystown, was born in Uniontown. He died April 28, 1914, of stomach cancer. On January 13, 1913, Margaret Elizabeth Scholl Hood, generous benefactor of Hood College, died in Baltimore. She was born July 7, 1833, at Manchester Farm, just south of Frederick City. On January 13, 1971, the retirement of John (Happy Johnny) Zufall as the morning show host on radio station WFMD was announced, bringing to a close an era in local broadcasting. On January 13, 1975, ground was broken for a new Citizens Nursing Home on Rosemont Avenue in Frederick. The first patient, Oscar Singer, 98, was admitted on December 6, 1976. The contract provided if Rachel should die first, after burial expenses, her interest in property would go to Christian's relatives. Should Christian die first, Rachel could sell the property and use the proceeds for her own use. Land - Lot #22 in Middletown; from John FISHER & w/ Mary in 1838. Adjoins lot of Jacob WISE; in 1861, adjoined lots of George WILLIAMSON on the east side and Jacob N. D. HOUPT on the west side. - Lot #1 in Wise Additon to Middletown, on the main road Witnessed by G. BOWLUS and Adam KELLER. Guardian was Robert G. McPHERSON. In November 1860, testimony was heard from Rev. C. M. KLINK who stated John C. BOLINGER was 16 months old. Dr. Charles J. BAER also testified, stating the date of birth of John Christian BOLINGER. Trustee was Rachel BOLINGER with sureties as Charles M. KLINK and Daniel MAIN; sale was held 23 Feb 1861 on the premises, high bidder was John CRONE at $995. On January 12, 1818, William Hammond, a free Negro, deeded part of Lot #10 on East All Saints Street to the trustees of a new Methodist Episcopal Church on which they were to build a new sanctuary. This church was the forerunner of Asbury United Methodist Church and was called Old Hill Church. On January 12, 1853, The Agricultural Club of Frederick County was organized with Lewis Kemp as president. It adopted the bylaws of "The Farmers' Club." On January 12, 1864, Mrs. David Nusbaum and her youngest son were shot and killed near Oak Orchard in the Liberty District during an apparent robbery at her home. Granville Smelser was hanged on July 22, 1864, at the Frederick County Jail on West South Street in Frederick for this crime. On January 12, 1969, President Lyndon B. Johnson spent the next to last weekend of his presidency at Camp David, where he ordered the Bureau of The Budget to request $431,000 for the John F. Kennedy grave at Arlington National Cemetery. On January 11, 1750, the Rev. Daniel Wagner, pastor of the German Reformed Church on West Church Street in Frederick from 1802 to 1810, was born in Eibelshausen, Germany. On January 11, 1843, Francis Scott Key, author of "The Defence of Ft. McHenry," which became our national anthem in 1931, died of pneumonia and pleurisy in Baltimore at the home of his daughter. He was originally buried at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church graveyard in that city but was removed to Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick in 1866. On January 11, 1887, Middletown Valley Savings Bank was organized. It opened for business on February 7. On January 11, 1898, a meeting was held in Independence Hall in Frederick for the purpose of organizing a lodge of the International Order of Odd Fellows. On January 11, 2004, former Frederick City Alderman William O. Lee, Jr., retired principal of West Frederick Middle School and author of a book on the black history of Frederick in the 20th Century, died at his McMurray Street home after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born on West All Saints Street, Frederick, on May 7, 1928. On January 10, 1777, Thomas Johnson, of Frederick, was named supreme commander of the Maryland Militia. On January 10, 1786, Frederick Augustus Heisley, local clockmaker, and the man who designed and built the town clock in the steeple of the German Reformed Church on West Church Street (now Trinity Chapel), announced the removal of his office to his home opposite Jacob Steiner's saddle shop. On January 10, 1912, Bloomfield Mills, owned by A. M. Swain & Company, and formally known as the Phleeger Mill, on Picnic Woods Road west of Middletown, was destroyed by a fire caused by overheated machinery. On January 10, 1975, Dr. Ross Pritchard announced his resignation as president of Hood College, effective July 31. I've "rescued" four old family bibles belonging to the SAFFELL, WHEATCRAFT, LEMON, and MORTON Families of Ohio including one containing a photograph of Rachel WHEATCRAFT SAFFELL which was taken at the D. M. Foreman Studio in Lancaster, OH sometime in the 1870's or 1880's. Rachel is identified as the "Mother of Nancy S. LEMON" on the back of the photograph. The first bible (printed in 1852) was a gift to Mary M. SAFFELL from her Uncle Samuel WHEATCRAFT in 1865. The bible contains the following family records: David SAFFELL was born October the 23rd 1820 and was married to Rachel WHEATCRAFT on February the 12th 1843 - Rachel was born April the 3rd 1824 - Father died March the 4th 1862 at Faetville Vaginiah in Company D 30 Ohio Volunteers OVG (exactly as written). 1 - Nancy J. SAFFELL was born November the 5th 1844 2 - E. L. SAFFELL was born February the 24th 1848 3 - Daniel W. SAFFELL was born April the 29th 1850 4 - Mary M. SAFFELL was born June the 28th 1852 5 - Debby A. SAFFELL was born March the 14th 1855 bible also includes: "Birthday thoughts" picture with ship 2nd bible (printed 1878) and inscribed by Elizabeth J. Rachel was one of 5 children born to this couple including, Rachel Ann; Samuel; Joseph; Daniel Hamilton "Ham"; and James Finley WHEATCRAFT, all born in Perry Co. OH between 1824 and 1843. Rachel was the wife of David SAFFELL (died 1862) she died 7 Jul 1904 and is buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Bremen, OH. Her husband David was the son of Amos SAFFELL (b. 22 Apr 1786 in Montgomery Co. MD) and Mary Ann LEMON (b. 6 Mar 1794 in Frederick Co. MD). Nancy married George F. or Thomas LEMON (1843-1900) and together they had 9 children including, David Hamilton; Edward Lewis; Herbert O.; John Herbert; Howard Westervelt; Daniel Bushfield; Mary Freydisa of Freyoisa; Lila; and Charles C. LEMON, all born between 1868 and 1880. Daniel Wesley SAFFELL was b. 28 Apr 1950 in Perry Co. OH to parents David SAFFELL (b. 23 Oct 1820 in Montgomery Co. MD) and Rachel Ann WHEATCRAFT (b. 3 Apr 1824 in Perry Co. OH) and Daniel married Delilah "Lila" Nancy SHRIVER (b. Apr 1850 in Ohio). Together Daniel and Lila had a daughter May E. SAFFELL b. Dec 1877. Daniel's brother Edward L. SAFFELL b. 24 Feb 1848 in Perry Co. OH married Martha M. POLING (b. 16 Sep 1852 in Bremen, OH) on 23 Sept 1875 in Perry Co. OH and they had 2 children, Fannie (b. 29 Jul 1876 in Perry Co. OH) and Mary (b. 15 Mar 1882 in Perry Co. OH). Edward died 18 Sept 1916 and is buried in the Grandview Cemetery in Bremen, OH. Debbie Ann SAFFELL b. 14 Mar 1855 in Perry OH married John Smith EVERITT (1854-1923) and together they had 4 children including, a baby born and died in 1880; Frank Saffell; Grace Edna; and another baby born and died in 1891. He was born February 24, 1848. On January 9, 2004, Theresa M. Adams was sworn in as a judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court. She was a former assistant state's attorney in Frederick, Carroll and Washington counties. She stood for election in the March 2004 primary and handily defeated John "Lennie" Thompson, president of the Frederick County Board of Commissioners. Her appointment was affirmed in the November 2, 2004, general election. On January 8, 1826, Magee, the Irish Giant, "exhibited himself" at a local museum in the home of Mrs. Mary Gantz in Frederick. On January 8, 1847, Clarence C. Carty, founder of Carty's Furniture Store and The Carty Funeral Home, and the first treasurer of Frederick Brick Works, was born in Frederick. The furniture store bearing his name at 48 East Patrick Street, in Frederick, now the home of The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, closed July 19, 1978. On January 8, 1923, the Francis Scott Key Hotel in downtown Frederick opened. On January 8, 1860, John Nelson, son of Revolutionary War hero General Roger Nelson, and a former congressman and Attorney General of The United States, died in Baltimore. He was born June 1, 1791, in Frederick. On January 8, 1993, Daniel H. Weinberg, prominent Frederick businessman and philanthropist, died at his Braddock Heights home. He was 83. He and his wife donated what is today called The Weinberg Center for The Arts to the City of Frederick. On January 7, 1806, Roger Brooke Taney and Anne Phoebe Charlton Key, sister of Francis Scott Key, were married. On January 7, 1883, Mrs. Emma N. Cunningham Baker, wife of Joseph Dill Baker, died at her South Market Street home of consumption. She was the mother of Holmes D. Baker, who succeeded his father as president of Citizens National Bank, and the grandmother of Joseph D. Baker, husband of former Frederick City Alderman Frances Baker. On January 7, 1940, the lake at Baker Park was named and dedicated to honor Frederick City Mayor Lloyd C. Culler, who, at the time, had been mayor for 15 years. On January 6, 1776, Thomas Johnson was selected as brigadier general of The Maryland Militia in The Upper District. On January 6, 1882, Gertrude Ingle, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Osborne Ingle, rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Frederick, died of diphtheria. Her brother Osborne Ingle, Jr., 3, died less than five days later of the same disease. On January 6, 1886, Russell Randolph Waesche was born in Thurmont. He became the commandant of the United States Coast Guard in 1936 and served in that position through World War II, until his retirement in 1946. His 10-year service as commandant remains a record. On January 6, 1949, William R. Diggs, longtime employee of the Baker family in Frederick, and for whom the swimming pool in Mullinex Park is named, died at Frederick City Hospital about nine hours after his wife, Florence. He was 83 at the time of his death. On January 6, 1960, Lloyd C. Culler, who served as mayor of Frederick for 22 years, died at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was born June 1, 1869. He also served as an alderman and headed one of Frederick's largest construction firms. On January 6, 1988, it was announced that the Charles Wilson Peale painting of the Thomas Johnson family, which had been willed to the C. Burr Arts Library, was to be "loaned" to The Baltimore Museum of Art. The reason given for the loan was the high cost of insurance for the painting, valued then at $1.5 million. On January 5, 1835, the midday temperature in Frederick was reported at 12 degrees below zero. On January 5, 1902, Outerbridge Horsey, Jr., the grandson of Maryland's second governor Thomas Sim Lee, died. Horsey produced one the America's finest rye whiskeys at his distillery near Burkittsville. He was born February 26, 1819. On January 5, 1907, the Wall Street Daily News of New York City, published a general history of The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, whose western terminus was in Frederick until 1842. On January 5, 1962, Frank and Janet Manthos and George and Mary Gillespie paid $4,000 to the Town of Brunswick for a parcel of land. It was on what is known as New York Hill, east of Scheer Stadium. The town's only radio station (1520 on the AM dial) was built on the site. On January 5, 2012, George W. Wireman, Jr., iconic native of Thurmont, died. On 21 Dec 1859, Jacob SAYLER gave oath the widow, Mary DIEHL, was 55 years old and her general health was moderately good. John W. DIEHL was administrator with sureties as George PFOUTZ and John Hammond. Trustee was also John W. DIEHL who notified the court on 4 Jan 1860 that Jacob DIEHL was instantly killed in a fatal accident by the discharge of his gun on the 30th of December 1859. The heirs agreed to divide the lands into lots. On 9 Oct 1860, sale was held on the premises; high bidders were: - Isaac PFOUTZ for House & land on "Cedar Clift" & "Resurvey on Small Beginnings", 150 acres, at $74.01/acre - George PFOUTZ for "Long Ridge", 137 acres, at $35/acre Total sales, $15,956.86. On January 4, 1786, Frederick's first English language newspaper, The Maryland Chronicle established by Mathias Bartgis, began publication. On January 4, 1825, Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born American to become a saint of the Roman Catholic Church (1975), died in Emmitsburg at The White House. On January 4, 1844, James M. Smith, president of The Woodsboro Bank and the Woodsboro and Detour Turnpike Company, was born on his father's farm near Woodsboro. He died September 12, 1920, in Baltimore. On January 4, 1851, Enoch Louis Lowe, of Frederick, became Maryland's governor, the youngest person (30) ever to hold that position. On January 4, 1894, a mass meeting was held in Mechanicstown to determine a name change for the town. The popular choice was Blue Mountain City, but the U. S. Post Office objected to the name because of its length. Thus, the name Thurmont was chosen. On January 4, 1970, City Policeman Blessing B. Kaetzel rescued Alvey M. Lantz, a 75-year-old invalid, from his burning home at 111 West Fourth Street in Frederick.
