    3. On February 17, 1824, Manassas Jacob Grove, a pioneer in the creation of lime for fertilizer from limestone, was born in Middletown. On February 17, 1857, James Diggs, a free Negro, was found stabbed and beaten to death in a field belonging to Upton Worthington near Urbana. Philip Hawkins was later arrested, convicted and hanged (January 29, 1858) for the murder. On February 17, 1942, traffic on the Old Jug Bridge east of Frederick was limited by the State Roads Commission due to deterioration. On February 17, 1948, the only house ever built on Carter Street (which was just west of East Street north of East Patrick Street) was moved to a lot at 242 East Second Street. Smith would not agree to sale unless he obtained the dower as well. Mary agreed to sell her dower rights to him for $1,000. She also had other property which was not her husband's and she sold for $500. In 1823, in a complaint of John KNOUFF, George VALENTINE and wife, and others vs John REESSON?, John KNOUFF was appointed trustee to sell real estate of John KNOUFF Sr, deceased.     3. On February 14, 1932, The Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Brunswick was organized in the chapel of the YMCA. On February 14, 1969, Frederick County purchased Rose Hill Manor, the last home of Maryland's first governor, Thomas Johnson. The price paid was $401,400. On February 14, 1983, Frederick County officials announced that they had reached an agreement to sell Elm Street School to Frederick Memorial Hospital to make room for a five-story parking deck and other hospital expansion. Frederick Co, Md Equity Court Abstracts - JS-6 470-506- EVANS, HUGHES, BRADLEY, BUCK, McCLAFORTY, LYLES - Jul 1827 Joseph HUGHES and Patrick BRADLEY vs John EVANS In Feb 1812, John EVANS of Allegany County (MD) proposed to sell to Joseph HUGHES (w/ Mary) of Emmitsburg a farm of 210 acres in Allegany County which he stated he owned for $10 per acre. Land - "Evan's Purchase", 210 acres; on Fifteen Mile Creek, 15 miles above Hancock, ten miles from Bath Town on the old Braddock Road, adjoining lands of Leonard BOVENS/BORONS (dec'd), Ignatius BOVEN/BERRING and Samuel ORMOND/OSMOND; about 3/4 mile from the river Potomack. Cleared land in 61 acres with log dwelling house, two gardens, four acres of meadow and woodland with the Potomack nearby and the great road to Cumberland coming directly by the door of the house. Joseph HUGHES' lot with two-story house was on Church Street in Emmitsburg by the alley of the Catholic church yard. Patrick BRADLEY's house and Lot #109 was in Emmitsburgh where William LOGON lived. Eventually, after numerous times, Joseph HUGHES (tavern owner) and Patrick BRADLEY agreed to provide a house and lot valued at $500 for downpayment on said property, provided they approved of said sale after inspection. After inspection, the land only contained a patent for 64 acres and the soil was poor and not suitable for cultivation; there were no improvements as stated, few trees, and the great road did not come near the property. In additon to the claimed fraud, John EVANS obtained deeds for Hughes and Bradley's property and placed them with William EMMIT to have them put on record as Evans' property. Testimony was given by John TROXELL, James BURKET, Henry BROWN, Henry GUYER, Jacob MATER (MOTTER), Thomas WILSON; James KING of Allegany County testified he was at an inquest of a dead man supposedly murdered by Evans; Walter BOVANS of Allegany County (age 34 in 1817). Patrick BRADLEY died with will 26 May 1821; filed 16 Jul 1831 w/ Deborah - Sarah BUCK (relationship not stated) - Roman Catholic Church - nephews/ John McCLAFORTY and Patrick McCLAFORTY and niece/their sister, Bridget McCLAFORTY Will lists Patrick's birth in 1756, he from Mevaugh Parish, Dunigan County, Ireland. I am looking for information on George Hiram Sleasman (1800-1877) who married Elizabeth Flautt (1805-1885)....their daughter, Elizabeth Virginia Sleasman married Wilson Carroll who was my 2nd great grandfather..... I did have some information on this family..but my computer crashed a while back and all the information that I had put in a genealogy folder on my computer went with it....I did have some paperwork on this family but it is just some census info and some other paperwork....but not much.... On February 13, 1837, William Schley and William Cost Johnson, both prominent Fredericktonians, fought a duel at Alexandria, VA. On February 13, 1906, George Carlton Rhoderick, Sr., who began work at The Catoctin Whig, later The Valley Register, at the age of 9 and remained there for 51 years, died in Middletown. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining the Lutheran Church there. He was born May 5, 1835.     3. On February 12, 1775, Louisa Catherine Johnson, daughter of Joshua Johnson and niece of Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first governor, was born at Great Hill near London, England. On July 26, 1797, she married John Quincy Adams in All Hallows Church, London. She died May 15, 1852, On February 12, 1778, Alexander Contee Hanson, son of John Hanson, "first President of The United States in Congress Assembled," was appointed as one of the first judges of Maryland's General Court. On February 12, 1978, thieves broke into The Taney House on South Bentz Street in Frederick and stole historical materials valued between $75,000 and $250,000. All items were recovered the next day and two men were charged with the theft.     3. On February 11, 1775, Dr. John Baltzell was born. He built the mansion on East Church Street which is today the home of The Historical Society of Frederick County. He died September 7, 1854. On February 11, 1916, Glen W. Eyler, after whom the American Legion Post in Woodsboro is named, was born at Daysville. Known as "Pappy," Eyler was killed on February 23, 1945, while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. On February 11, 1952, the Frederick City Board of Aldermen unanimously approved Frederick native and Maryland State Policeman Charles Victor Main as Chief of Police. He began his duties March 17. On February 11, 1983, snow began falling just after midnight and blanketed Frederick County. When it stopped between 28 and 36 inches had fallen and paralyzed the county. The previous record occurred February 12, 1899, when 18 inches fell. On February 11, 1986, District Court Judge Mary Ann Stepler was elevated to the Frederick County Circuit Court by Maryland Governor Harry Hughes, becoming the first woman on that court.
