On March 2, 1821, Peter and Kitty, Negro brother and sister, were hanged at the Old Magazine on the Harper's Ferry Road, for the murder of their master's wife, Mrs. William (Catherine) Baker, in August 1820. On March 2, 1891, Dr. Joseph B. Garrott, a druggist who operated Garrott's Pharmacy on South Market Street, the predecessor to Pearre's Apothecary, died unexpectedly at age 47. He was survived by his wife, the former Henrietta Loutham, and two daughters, Nellie, 16, and Susie, 11. On March 2, 1970, Fredericktown Bank and Trust Company opened its new 24,000 square foot building in the unit block of North Market Street. The new facility replaced a building with 5,000 square feet. The institution was founded in 1828. On March 2, 1974, the main studio and executive offices of WTRI radio in Brunswick were destroyed by fire. The station returned to the air on March 7 from a mobile studio borrowed from WDON in Wheaton. On March 1, 1749, Otho Holland Williams, employed in the clerk's office at The Frederick County Court at age 14, and a distinguished hero of The Revolutionary War, was born in Prince George's County. He was also the founder of Williamsport. He died July 15, 1794, in Woodstock, VA, and was buried in Williamsport. On March 1, 1781, John Hanson, of Frederick, signed The Articles of Confederation for Maryland. His staunch insistence that all the states give up their claims to "western lands" made Maryland the last state to sign these articles. It was also this act which led to his election as the "first president of The United States under The Articles of Confederation." On March 1, 1842, William Gideon Baker, older brother of Joseph Dill Baker, and founder of The Buckingham School, was born in Buckeystown. He died September 14, 1922, and was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick. He was also the father of William Gideon Baker, Jr., who was the co-founder of the financial house of Baker, Watts & Co. On March 1, 1862, The Hessian Barracks on South Market Street in Frederick opened as General Hospital #1 for Union Army wounded. On March 1, 1933, the Gospel Temple Apostolic Faith Church of Brunswick was dedicated. The founder and builder of the church was Elder Charles H. Johnson, who had been the pastor of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Brunswick. On March 1, 1941, Congressman William D. Byron, of Maryland's Sixth Congressional District, was buried after services in Hagerstown. He was killed in a plane crash near Atlanta on February 27. His wife Kathryn was elected to replace him on May 27. Both his son, Goodloe, and his daughter-in-law, Beverly, served as Sixth District congressmen. On March 1, 1962, the Brunswick Library Association was formed at a meeting at the YMCA. A new library was dedicated on April 20, 1963, at 317 Brunswick Street. William willed some land to his son, Moses FARQUHAR. Moses' sons, Moses B. FARQUHAR (w/ Massey/Mapey) (now in Ohio) and William P. FARQUHAR (w/ Mary) sold part of land (4 acres) to Thomas EDMONDSON in 1822; Moses B. FARQUHAR sold 30 acres with an exception of 40 sq perches which went to his grandmother, Lydia HATTON. There was another 40 sq perches Robert and Lydia HATTON sold to Moses B. FARQUHAR which was not mentioned in the deed. In Aug 1827, decree passed to correct the deed (plat shown). Land - Lot #1 of "Resurvey on Forrest in Need", 34 acres with brick house and stone shop, where Moses B. had lived. On February 28, 1819, Outerbridge Horsey Jr., the great grandson of Maryland Governor Thomas Sim Lee, who produced one of America's finest rye whiskeys at his Burkittsville distillery, was born. He died January 5, 1902. On February 28, 1840, reels were put into the Hessian Barrack in Frederick to begin silk manufacture. On February 28, 1953, Frederick and Braddock Heights telephones were converted to dial operations and transferred to a new cross-bar office at 33 East Patrick Street in Frederick. On February 28, 1993, fire destroyed the sanctuary of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Adventist Drive near Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick.     3. On February 27, 1823, Louis McMurray was born in Baltimore County. He developed a process for preserving canned goods and opened a cannery in Frederick. McMurray Street, off West South Street, is named for him. On February 27, 1859, Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key, was murdered on the streets of Washington near The White House by New York Congressman Daniel Sickles, who lost a leg as a Union general at Gettysburg. On February 27, 1941, Lewis Edward Byerly, tanner, and president of The Great Southern Printing and Manufacturing Company, publishers of The Frederick News-Post, for 48 years, died of a heart attack at his East Patrick Street home. On February 27, 1941, Sixth District Congressman William Devereux Byron, vice president of The Herald Mail Company in Hagerstown, was killed in a plane crash near Atlanta. His wife Kathryn was elected to replace him on May 27. His son, Goodloe E. Byron, and his daughter-in-law, Beverly Butcher Byron, also were elected to this congressional seat. On February 27, 1959, Mike, a Pennsylvania black bear which was an attraction at Delphey's Sports Store on West Patrick Street in Frederick for nearly 20 years, died suddenly. On February 27, 1965, Camp Catoctin, the first Job Corps training facility in the nation, was officially dedicated near Thurmont. There were more than 150 citizens in attendance and 85 Job Corpsmen on hand.     3. Hi... I am researching David Prior (1828-1904) who married Josephine Sleasman and also married Laura Ann Willard (1842-1902)... I am looking for the names of the children that David had with Laura...I found most of them in the census and also on familysearch.org....but in the 1900 census...it states that she has had 13 children with 11 living....I can only find 9 of them....     3. On February 25, 1897, Julia Etchison (Mrs. John H. Hanna Jr.), who taught at Frederick High School for 32 years, was a published author and a columnist for The Frederick News-Post, was born. On February 25, 1921, Charles B. Robinson, 16, was hanged at the Frederick County Jail on West South Street in Frederick for the rape and murder of Mary Edith Coblentz Hightman at her Middletown area farm on November 16, 1920. This was the next to last execution in Frederick County. On February 25, 1990, President George Bush and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl held a joint news conference at Camp Greentop near Thurmont after two days of talks at Camp David, the presidential retreat, on a unified Germany.     3. On February 24, 1848, John D. Ahalt, who founded Ahalt's Distillery in Burkittsville in 1878, was born. On February 24, 1880, John Garrison Etchison, who founded the Etchison Funeral Home in Jefferson in 1848, died at the age of 57. He later moved his business to Frederick, and it continued until 1971. Today, the Keeney, Basford Funeral Home occupies the same facility that The Etchison Funeral Home occupied for many years in the 100 block of East Church Street in Frederick. On February 24, 1992, Regis Raymond Raffensberger, head of the Tactical Unit of The Baltimore City Police Department, became police chief in Frederick.     3. On February 23, 1849, President-elect Zachary Taylor visited Frederick on his way to Washington for his inauguration. On February 23, 1937, dial telephone service arrived in Walkersville. It was operated from a new Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company facility on Frederick Street. On February 23, 1989, The Frederick Towne Mall on West Patrick Street's Golden Mile, was sold for $51 million, the largest single real estate transaction in Frederick County history to this date.
