    3. Like some of you, I also began experiencing problems gaining remote access to the Heritage Quest databases. Last weekend, I contacted the Sailor HELP DESK and their reply led me to conclude that a system change has created a situation where access to this site is now being blocked by my computer firewall (Norton Internet Security 2006). As a temporary solution, I click on the Norton Internet Security icon in my task bar where I'm given the option to disable my security for as little as 5 minutes, after which I am now able to remote access the Heritage Quest databases. For me, a 5 minute lapse in my internet security is well worth the risk when considering the alternatives until this problem is successfully resolved. Bob Fout

    3. On March 7, 1828, Fredericktown Savings Institution was organized. It opened its doors in the office of Dr. Jacob Baer on North Market Street, and purchased its present location in 1850. At the turn of the 21st Century the bank was known as Fredericktown Bank, a member of Mercantile Bankshares Corporation. The name Fredericktown Bank disappeared in 2003 when Mercantile purchased Farmers & Mechanics National Bank and decided to continue that name rather than Fredericktown. On March 7, 1856, at a dance at Slabtown, four miles south of Frederick, James Diggs, a free Negro, killed a slave belonging to James H. Simmons with a shovel. Diggs himself was a victim of murder on February 17, 1857, when he was killed by Philip Hawkins, who was hanged for the murder on January 29, 1858. On March 7, 1861, The Examiner of Frederick reported the inauguration of Abraham Lincoln without any mention of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney, a former Frederick resident who administered the oath of office. On March 7, 1867, Joseph W. L. Carty, former clerk of the Circuit Court and a director of Farmers & Mechanics National Bank, died. He was 45 and was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery. On March 7, 1947, Esther E. Grinage, widow of artist William H. B. Grinage, and for whom the Grinage Kindergarten for Negro children (founded By F. 3. As many of you are aware, for reasons still unclear, at least unclear to me, many FCPL patrons have had trouble accessing Heritage Quest remotely. Our computer people worked on it last week. It is seems to be a problem with Proquest and firewalls. I do not know why it suddenly started, there was some change in the url, but don't really know if that was the reason. As you all are also aware, we get Heritage Quest through the state. Therefore, if you are continuing to have trouble please contact the Sailor help Desk at 410-396-4636 or askus@sailor.lib.md.us. as your first line of troubleshooting. Further information about the Help Desk can be found at http://www.sailor.lib.md.us/help/hdesk.html. I have also been advised that people should consult http://www.etsupp.com/firewalls. As a last recourse the toll free support number for Proquest is 1-800-889-3358. Please contact Sailor first as they need to know that there is a problem, if one exists. I know it is frustrating to have to go through all this. I am very sorry for the inconvenience many of you have been experiencing. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to fix the problem. Sailor has told me that our county seems to be the only county that is having trouble. It don't make any sense to me either. If you get no where with any of this please keep me informed and I will do what I can to further investigate the situation. Again, thank you for your patience. Mary **** Mary K.
