On March 29, 1825, Diarist Jacob Engelbrecht married Elizabeth Ramsburgh, daughter of John Ramsburgh. From 1819 until 1878, Jacob Engelbrecht recorded local and national events in a diary he compiled. Frequently his personal observations were made from the front window of his tailor shop on West Patrick Street across from The Barbara Fritchie House. He was also the mayor of Frederick for 3 years after The Civil War. On March 29, 1895, County Commissioners William Morrison, James H. Delauter and Frank House were acquitted of bribery charges in a trial before Judges James McSherry and John Alexander Lynch. The allegations centered around charges that the three were selling positions in county government. On March 29, 1963, Damion and The Classics, a rock-n-roll band, made their debut at a junior class party at Frederick High School. The group stayed together and earned a national reputation before splitting up permanently in the early 1980s. On March 29, 1982, the new C. Burr Artz Library opened in the 100 block of East Patrick Street in downtown Frederick. I believe your referencing Libertytown. It still exists, about 7 miles north of New Market & Interstate 70, on Route 75(N/S), intersects with Route 26(E/W). Its about 10-12 miles East of Frederick City. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Glouer4@aol.com> To: <MDFREDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 10:07 PM Subject: [MDFR] LIBERTY TOWNSHIP 1800 >I have found persons of interest in 1800 Frederick Co at Liberty, District >7. > I presume Liberty is the township name??? > > Can someone tell me please where that was/is? Hi, These family names, Johnson, Ford, Henthorn & Polk(e)& Linn have some connections to the Gilliland family I'm researching. If anyone is researching any of the above names, I would like to correspond with you. The GILLILAND name has many variations of spelling, GILLELAND, GILLAN, GILLION, GILLELAN, GILLEYLEN. Mary GILLILAND of Frederick County, Maryland dated February 23, 1775 probate May 2, 1782 #1 p. 66-67 Son William JOHNSON plantation & 70 acres tract where he lives in Frederick County.Son Barnet JOHNSON 25 pounds; Daughters Hannah POLKE & Mary LINN - bed, furniture & clothes equally.Executor: son William; Witnesses: John Higgins, Mathias Campbell, Patrick Thompson James had died by 1757 at which time an inventory of his estate was valued at over 23 pounds. Mary GILLILAND, her relationship unknown, swore an oath to a just and perfect inventory. James estate remained in the court for the next ten years. Hannah GILLILAND was appointed administratrix of his estate. According to these records she married William POLK and the final account of James' estate was received in the September Court in 1767. Early Settlers of Frederick County, Maryland and Adams County, Pennsylvania. Mary GILLILAND is believe to be the wife of James GILLILAND. Was Mary GILLILAND married to a JOHNSON prior to or after the marriage to James GILLILAND? Besides, Barnet & William JOHNSON there is a Nicolas & Jacob JOHNSON mentioned in several early dated transactions. Does any JOHNSON family members know anything about this family? Does any LINN family members know who Mary GILLILAND OR JOHNSON had married? Court Records, March 5, 1757, James GILLILAND, his administration bond in common form by Hannah GILLILAND, his administratrix with John HENTHORN and James HENTHORN of Frederick County, Maryland for surators in sum of 300 pounds sterling, dated 5th day of March 1757. The surators sued Hannah for several years after 1757 to collect something due the estate. She was married to, William POLK. (there may be a further connection of Gilliland to Philip HENTHORN, but the note didnt explain it.) (Source: Testamentary Proceedings, Maryland Hall of Records). Does any HENTHORN family members know of this proceeding and a connection to the GILLILAND family? William Polk was a son to Charles & Christina POLK(e). POLKE, Charles of Frederick County, Maryland, farmer. Will dated March 19, 1753, very sick. To wife Christina: thirds of moveable and use of plantation during widowhood; if she marry, plantation to be sold or disposed of as follows: to son William: his horse and saddle and his equal share of plantation. Plantation to be equally divided among 5 sons and 1 daughter. (Sons named in birth order) Willilam, Edmond, Thomas, Charles, John and Sarah. If any die, their part equally among rest. If my executors sees proper to send my sons to trades, they should do it. Wife and Ralph MATSON Executors. /s/ Charles POLKE. Witnesses: Henry STEWART, John FICHURE, Willilam GILLILAND. Mary Smith had a brother (Alexander Smith) and a sister (Ann Elisa - Elizabeth, believed to be wife of George Crumrine) who also went to Tuscarawas Co., OH. I've not been able to locate John (or Mary) in the 1820 Census. It is assumed that Mary is still alive in Feb 1826 when she was listed in her father's Will (Yost Smith/Schmidt). However, in the first Will Estate Distribution Record of Yost, dated 9 May 1827, she is only mentioned in the attached note "John Keplinger and wife, see list of debts" . She is not mentioned at all in the 2nd and 3rd Estate Distributions of her father, Yost. If anyone has researched the other Keplingers, or there spouses, and have come across an obit, baptism sponsor, or whatever that mentions John and Mary, please let me know. Thanks. Jim
