my wife checked into getting a copy of her brother's autopsy about 20-25 years ago.... she was told she could get a copy (we're in Ohio), but the cost then was $400..... allowing for inflation and greed, i'd be surprised it it wasn't now $1000 in Ohio.... it also appeared at that time, that only a parent, spouse, child or sibling could get a copy.... aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins weren't related closely enough to be eligible.... in this case, the coroner was a friend of the family and he was willing to answer most of her questions.... he also pointed out that unless you were a medical professional, that much of what was in the report would be meaningless.... (do you really need to know who much Uncle Fred's liver weighed?) i'd suspect the rules would vary a lot from state to state.... although honestly, i'm very surprised to hear that you can actually get a copy in any state..... steve koons, dayton, ohio
Medical records are permanently sealed in MD and if an autopsy is performed in a hospital then the results become part of the medical record and no one can get that, not the spouse, children, etc., without a very good reason and a court order. Most post-mortems are performed in hospitals. If the Medical Examiner's office performs the post-mortem you might be able to get those records since they are not part of a medical record. However, I doubt if it is easy. The Medical Examiner's office performs autopsy's when there is foul play, suspicious death, sudden death in an apparently heathy indivdual. We discussed this on another list where the question was also posted and a phyisician wrote that even if you could understand all the medical terms, etc., it's just not something you really need to read. Getting the cause of death from the person performing the procedure is probably what you want to know and not all the gory details. Bottom line: in Maryland you're not getting a copy anyway - certainly not for genealogical purposes Kathi Jones-Hudson MD Tombstone Transcription Project Manager http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/maryland/maryland.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Can't help but make a comment about the Lafayette story-- How many soldiers did it take to carry Lafayette off the Battlefield--<G>? This story has been attributed to several different men. My husband's ancestor, John Davis, was in a light infantry corps of men picked from the Continental Regiments to serve with General Lafayette. He was in Captain Joseph McClellan's company which was assigned to Colonel Stewart's Ninth Regiment. John was at Brandywine where he helped carry Lafayette from the field when he was wounded.
