The 1776 Census by Carothers contains only the Elizabethtown District (later Hagerstown) and the districts that would make up later Montgomery County, including Georgetown and parts of later D.C. The remainer of Frederick county is not in the book. ---- John Hogg <john.hogg@sbcglobal.net> wrote: ============= Title 1776 census of Maryland Authors Carothers, Bettie Stirling (Main Author) Note Location Film Also on microfilm. On August 31, 1784, John Frederick Amelung and 68 workmen and their families arrived in Baltimore aboard the brig "Fame," after a four month voyage from Bremen, Germany. These people built and operated Amelung's New Bremen Glassworks near Park Mills in Frederick County. They produced some of the finest glassware in the new United States. Was there a 1776 census in Frederick Co? Morris
The 1860 Census, Urbana District, Frederick County, MD, page 473B, lists a David Hagan, 64, farmer, as head of a household. However, the children identified living with him: William, age 20; Lavinia, age 18 and Singleton, age 16 are the children of Adam Hagan and Cordelia Purdy Hagan of that county. Adam Hagan died in 1855. To the best of my knowledge this David Hagan is not mentioned in any other Census for Frederick County. I can accept that he died after 1860 as the reason he is not mentioned in later Census but I have no idea why he is not mentioned in earlier Census records. Perhaps he had another name that he was using then? To compound this mystery the above children are listed in the 1870 Frederick County Census in the household of their mother, Cordelia Hagan (in the 1880 Census her name is spelled Cornelia). I would appreciate any help in answering the following questions: 1. Who was the above David Hagan? 2. Where could Cornelia Hagan been when the 1860 Census was taken?
The owners of 156 West Patrick Street were Frank B. and Charles S. Keefer, Tinners and Plumbers. Frank lived at 32 E. South Street in Frederick and Charles at 105 West South Street. The 1880 census indicates that Frank's father was George W. and his mother Mary E. living on South Street. At that time Charles is not listed and Frank is "9" years old which is a two year descrepancy from the 1900 census listing his age at 27. The Maryland 1890 census was mostly lost, so there is no way to verify Charles in Frederick who does not seem to be in Frederick in 1900. Confusing! I have a question about the following entry in the history notes that John Asbury so kindly posts for us. >>On August 27, 1926, the Barbara Fritchie Association purchased the Keefer Brothers property at 156 West Patrick Street in Frederick. The buildings were later torn down and a replica Fritchie home built on the site.<< Does anyone know to which Keefer brothers this refers? I am looking for the parents of the two Keefer grandsons of Joseph (Yost) Greenwood who were named in Joseph's 1828 will, Ludwick (Lewis) and Joseph Keefer. Perhaps by following the property owners backwards I can find a relationship. Ludwick Keefer (1803-1880) married Rachael Nusbaum in 1833. They both died in the Linganore District of Frederick Co. Their 8 children would have been deceased before 1926 and couldn't have owned 156 West Patrick Street, but Ludwick's grandchildren would be in the right age range. Joseph Keefer (1805-1860) married Margaret Coppersmith in 1832. They appear to have had 12 children. I know less about them. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. On August 28, 1774, Elizabeth Ann Bayley (Seton), America's first native-born saint of The Roman Catholic church, was born in New York City. She is buried in Emmitsburg. On August 28, 1898, Charles Miller, son of Martin Miller of Middletown, stabbed Roy Brown, an 18-year-old colored youth, in the neck with a pocket knife, severing his jugular vein. The two men quarreled over Miller's bragging about how fast he rode his bicycle from Baltimore to a religious camp meeting near Braddock Heights. On August 28, 1976, the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was dedicated in Emmitsburg. I was noticing that Jay Cline in a recent message mentions a 1776 census list for Frederick Co. Unless I am misinterpreting his post, this--and any other similar list around the same time--would be where one might expect that my ancestor Ninian Chamberlain would appear, since he and his family supposedly lived somewhere in the Frederick Co. area in the 1760s and 70s before moving to western NC. So I am wondering if there is someone who has access to this 1776 list--or any others about that time--who could tell whether the Chamberlains (Chamberlins, etc.) are indeed listed there. I already have published documentation that the names Ninian and sons Jeremiah and John appear in several public records of Frederick Co. in the 1760s and 70s. Thanks, Bob
