He, thus, became the last veteran of that war to live in the county. For those who are researching Washington County, Maryland, you may find the following article interesting. Ellen SmithCAVETOWN DISTRICT NO. 7 “Cavetown District No. 7” from Scharf History of Western Maryland, page 1268. Cavetown, the seventh election district of Washington County, lies along the extreme eastern border, and but one remove from the Pennsylvania line, Ringgold District, which occupies the extreme northeastern position, intervening. The eastern line of Cavetown District follows the irregular course of South Mountain, extending along its summit. Chewsville District binds it on the south, and on the southwest; Leitersburg District on the west and north; and Ringgold District forms its northern boundary, Like the adjacent districts of Beaver Creek, Boonsboro, and Rohrersville, Cavetown District abounds in the wildly picturesque and charming pastoral scenery which so diversifies the eastern portion of the county. The face of the country in the interior is rolling, but the land is rich and fertile, and yields large crops. The district is thickly populated by an industrious, wealthy, and thrifty community, who enjoys the advantages of an excellent public school system. The main line of the Western Maryland Railroad passes through the centre of the district, which is penetrated by numerous county and public roads, and the Cavetown and Hagerstown Pike. Among the farmers and old residents of the district are D. Gaither Huyett and David Oswald, who have handsome estates near Cavetown; J. Diamond, S. Grove, J. Gouker, J. Grove, D. Wolf, S. Alsip, G. I am trying to locate the birth record for Jacob Kuhn born in Frederick in the year 1800. We believe that possibly he is a descendent of a Hessian Soldier but have no proof to that fact. Jacob married Lydia Ann Beckenbaugh in 1830 and lived in the area until after 1850 when he moved his family to Shelby County OH. We would appreciate help with the look up and would be willing to pay expenses to obtain the information. Thank you David E Mason

I have been told that there is a will for Maria/Mary Smith dated 1781 and probated in 1783, and a final account 07 Aug 1784 in Frederick Co., MD. I would love to know what this says. This might be my ancestors' first wife. But I haven't seen this information to know for sure. Any help with Smith info in early Frederick would be most helpful in sorting them out. Shirley

Dear List: Where do I look to find info on this John? 1790 Census - Frederick Co Page 251 John Hilton 1 1 2 --- Daughter Mary married John Braddock 2/23/1809 German Reformed Church, Frederick Daughter Elizabeth married William Braddock 8/25/1812 German Reformed Church, Frederick Son John born April 22, 1787 died July 21, 1856 Georgetown, DC. May 17, 1802 Apprentice "John Hilton, Jr, aged 15 y last April 22, with consent of his father John Hilton, Sr, to Mathias Bartgis, printer to age 21." I know that Mathias Bartgis is a well-known newspaper printer in Frederick. John Jr. named one of his sons John Perry Hilton. Mary Hilton Braddock named one of her sons William Perry Braddock. 1790 Census - Frederick Co Page 253 there is a Sarah Perry no male head of family ( - 2 2 - 4). Could there be a connection? Would like more info on this Perry family. John Jr. may have married a Sarah who died DC 1865. I have no proof but both John Hilton and Sarah Hilton are buried in the same plot of 13 grave sites purchased by John Perry Hilton. No tombstone inscriptions to give a clue and they are not buried beside each other. Could this Sarah be a Sarah Perry, daughter of the 1790 Sarah Perry? I would appreciate any suggestions or information. John Sr. is my 3rd great grandfather and has been the brick wall I can't seem to pull down. Thanks! Ruth Fleak Goose Creek, SC
