Shirley, Great catch on the will of Humphrey Berry and mention of his son Samuel. It's very possible that Ann Cawood, the wife of Samuel Berry could have been the daughter of Stephen Cawood, Sr and Ann Terrett. I have the name of only one child for them, and that's Stephen, Jr. Stephen Cawood, Sr. died in May 1676 at age 45, the year before Ann Cawood was born. Ann Terrett lived until 1695. There is a great deal of documentation for the Cawood lines. I've never looked carefully except where the Cawood and Wedding or Cawood and Cox families were joined by marriage, since they are all peripheral to the people I'm concerned with. I think there ought to be mention of the Berrys in the Cawood genealogies somewhere. See "Cawood Family Histories" at http://www.ancientfaces.com/research/surnames/C/cawood Then there's this (see the last name) at http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/1949/MSMALLW.html quote Children of Thomas SMALLWOOD and Alice (---) were as follows: + 31 i James4 Smallwood (Sr.) [506], born 1697/1700. He married Ann (---) [593]. + 32 ii Thomas4 Smallwood [507] married Mary (---) [603]. + 33 iii Pryor4 Smallwood [508] married Winifred (---) [615]. + 34 iv Elizabeth4 Smallwood [509] married John Cawood [510]. 35 v Sarah4 Smallwood [511] married Raby [512]. + 36 vi Esther4 Smallwood [513] married Richard Harrison [514]. + 37 vii Charity4 Smallwood [515] married Davy [516]. + 38 viii Mary4 Smallwood [517] married Humphrey Berry [518]. 38. Mary4 Smallwood [517] (Thomas3, James2, Matthew1) married Humphrey Berry [518]. Children of Mary SMALLWOOD and Humphrey BERRY were as follows: + 122 i Humphrey5 Berry (Jr.) [773] married Benedictor Moore [551] (see 55). 123 ii Thomas5 Berry [774] 124 iii Martha Ann5 Berry [861] married (1) abt. 1771, Samuel Smallwood [585] (see 77), son of James Smallwood [501] and Susannah Marbury [578] . ; married (2) on 5 Aug 1787 in Prince George Co., MD, Robert Abercromby [862]. end quote and from the same site quote Children of Sarah SMALLWOOD and Henry MOORE were as follows: 51 i Sarah4 Moore [547] 52 ii Esther4 Moore [548] 53 iii Charity4 Moore [549] 54 iv Ann Davis4 Moore [550] 55 v Benedictor4 Moore [551] married Humphrey Berry (Jr.) [773] (see 122), son of Humphrey Berry [518] and Mary Smallwood [517] . 56 vi Elizabeth4 Moore [552] 57 vii William4 Moore [553] 58 viii Henry4 Moore [554] 122. Humphrey5 Berry (Jr.) [773] (Mary4 Smallwood, Thomas3, James2, Matthew1) married Benedictor Moore [551] (see 55), daughter of Henry Moore [492] and Sarah Smallwood [481] . Children of Humphrey BERRY (Jr.) and Benedictor MOORE were as follows: 212 i Henry More6 Berry [788] 213 ii James Smallwood6 Berry [789] 214 iii Benjamin6 Berry [790] 215 iv Pryor6 Berry [791] 216 v Samuel6 Berry [792] 217 vi Thomas6 Berry [793] 218 vii Unknown6 Berry [794] 219 viii Unknown26 Berry [795] 220 ix Unknown36 Berry [796] end quote AND THEN at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mlsmith67/LostAncestors4.html quote Samuel BERRY, Humphrey BERRY and Ann LOVEJOY, John BERRY and Martha COLLIER These are believed to be the ancestors of William Berry of Fayette County, Alabama, who married Sarah Nelson . Samuel Berry is said to have been born in Charles County, Maryland, and died there in 1753. Humphrey Berry is said to have had two wives. The first was Mary Smallwood, and the second Ann Lovejoy, the mother of John Berry, born about 1752. According to probate records, John Berry died about 1804 in Jackson County, Georgia, and his widow, Martha Berry , married a Mr. Green shortly thereafter. The children, Joshua Berry , Robert Berry, Elizabeth Berry, Mary Berry and William Berry (who was an infant of just a few months) were "bound out" to various families, rather than living with their mother and her new husband. Some of the placements were successful, others not, according to records of the Orphans Court. We have no documentation for anything before the death of John and the disposition of the children, so again, any proof or disproof of what we think we know would be most welcome! end quote I just did simple searches for "Humphrey Berry" and "Stephen Cawood" on Google to find these.
