    3. The following info, extracted from one of my books, may be of no use to you: Dr. Gustavus Brown was born 10 April 1689 in Dalkeith, Scotland and came to Maryland in 1708. He began his practice of medicine in Nansemond, married into a wealthy family and became rich. He moved back to Scotland but returned to Maryland in 1734 where he had years before purchased the seat of Col. Lomax, called Rich Hill, four miles from Port Tobacco, Charles Co. He married, first, in 1710 to Frances Fowke, who was born 2 February 1691 and died 8 November 1744, the daughter of Col. Gerard and Sarah (Burdett) Fowke of Charles County. Sarah Burdett was the second wife of Col. Gerard Fowke. His first wife was Mary Lomax. Col. Fowke was born in 1662 and died 20 Jan. 1734. Gustavus Brown died of apoplexy at Rich Hill in April 1762.” [Virginia Genealogies by Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1966. LDS fiche #6046678] Brown was the personal physician of George Washington and a friend and neighbor of Cleborne. The antecedents of Mary Lomax, the first wife of Col. Gerard Fowke, are unknown. That is my connection to the FOWKE family. For my own edification I had followed that family line on the Internet and found the following information (UNKNOWN if any of it is verifiable): Generation 1 Gerard FOWKE (bef. 1750 – aft. 1794), md. Margery SMITH; Children: Gerard, James, Katherine, Sally. Generation 2 Gerard FOWKE , Capt.(1724 CC, MD – 1775/83), md. Sarah HANSON (b. 1728); children: Katherine, Roger, Gerard, Sarah (Sallie). Generation 3 Roger FOWKE, (1696 CC,MD – bef. 1/31/1726/7), md. Ann STONE (b. 1700); children: Mary, Gerard, Jane. Generation 4 Col. Gerard FOWKE II (15 JUL 1662 CC, MD - 20 JAN 1733/34), md. 1st Mary LOMAX (b. ca. 1666), md. 2nd Sarah BURDETTE (b. ca. 1665) on 12/31/1686; children: Gerard III, Ann, Frances, Catherine, Capt. Chandler, Roger. Generation 5 Col. Gerard FOWKE (b.ca. 1625 Eng.), md. Anne THOROUGHGOOD (b. 10/30/1630 VA); children: Adam, Gerard II, Mary, Elizabeth. Generation 6 Roger FOWKE (b. ca. 1598 Eng.), md. Mary BAYLEY (b. ca. 1603); children: Gerard et al. -----Original Message----- From: Norma Lundgren [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 9:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MDCHARLE] Mary Stone Jones, Gerard and Margery Fowke, etc, descendants of whom Hi, List, Does anyone know who was the ancestor of the people mentioned in the following deed: p. 159, TLC Genealogy, Charles County Land Records Book N#4 Page 197.
