    1. [MDCHARLE] John Cornish Brawner b 1766 and wife Sarah and Harrison Golding

    3. Dear List Haven't posted for a long time. Earlier this year there appeared on the Prince William Co, VA list the following court application posted by CindyMcC 8 Dec 2006: LEGISLATIVE PETITION: SARAH BRAWNER SAYS HER LATE HUSBAND JOHN CONTRACTED FOR A PLANTATION IN PRINCE WM COUNTY VA 1810 To the Honorable the Legislature of Virginia. The memorial and petition of Sarah Brawner now of the County of Prince William formerly of the State of Maryland. Humbly sheweth. That her late husband John C. Brawner some time in the year 1807 contracted for a plantation in the said County of Prince William at a high rent for the ensuing year, with a view of removing his family thereto, but unfortunately died in the fall of the same year previous to his removal leaving your petitioner a widow with eight children, six of them females and the greater part of them very young. In this situation your petitioner found herself under a necessity of removing, in conformity to the contract of her husband to Virginia leaving behind her a negro boy named Anthony now about the age of eighteen years, whose services in aiding her in the support of her numerous and helpless family would be to her of the utmost importance could she be permitted to bring help from Maryland, where he is to her of little value, to Virginia, where she has only the assistance of one slave, a small negro girl. Your petitioner therefore humbly prays that your honorable body will take into consideration her peculiar situation and grant her a law for that purpose permission to bring the aforesaid slave from Maryland to this Commonwealth and your petitioner will pray be. Sarah (X) Brawner I can and hereby do certify that from my own knowledge the circumstances respecting the death of Mr. Brawner and the removal of Mrs. Brawner in the above petition alluded to are correctly stated. The contract for a plantation having been entered into between the said John C. Brawner and myself. I also know the very distressed situation in which the petitioner and her small family now placed in the need of their removal and the difficulty with which she contrived to support their needs and verily believe her to be deserving wonder and hope that her present application shall be favorably received by the legislature. Dumfries, September 29th, 1810 John Lawson I am acquainted with the petitioner and have faith in her petition stated to be true and myself knowing the informant of the said petitioner I hope she may be gratified. We the subscribers cheerfully concur in support of the foregoing memorial and petition under a confedate impression of the correctness of the statement there in made and hope that the prayer of the petitioner may be granted verily believing that the accommodation prayed for will be of material benefit to the petitioner and his family and of no injury to the community or any individual thereof. Teneson SOURCE: Legislative Petitions of Prince William County, Va, Microfilm 2048686, Salt Lake City. Now my Brawner quest has been going for some time. A colleague (Lois P 21 May 2000) found the following at Salt Lake City Archives: "Representatives, the widow, & nine children of the deceased viz Grace Brawner, Henry Brawner, Hetty Brawner, Amelia Brawner, Elizabeth Brawner, John Brawner, William Brawner, _______ (blank space) Brawner, & Malinda Brawner - Charles County July 7th, 1812. Then came Edward Brawner the accountant within mentioned and made oath.......Edward Brawner, son of John C Brawner..." Lois P, 25 Jan 2001 "On Sept 5, 1811 Harrison Golding and Sarah Golding relinquish administration of John Cornish Brawner's estate to Edward Brawner." Lois P, 27 May 2000 I got a new copy of the John C Brawner inventory and distribution. (I asked one of the librarians at the FHL and they said viz means namely.) I also saw this abbreviation used with Anthony, a slave, the only "property" that John C. owned. Given all of this and given that it is certain that this Brawner family moved to Dumfries after the death of John Cornish Brawner in 1807, it would seem correct that the wife of John Cornish Brawner was Sarah, and not Grace as we had assumed from the quote naming all the family. It seemed strange to us at the time that the relinquishment of administration should mention Harrison Golding and Sarah Golding separately. Research has demonstrated that there was a Harrison Golding in Prince William County in 1820 and that there were at least two boys: Thomas Golding and Harrison jr born 1813 and 1815 respectively with parents Harrison and Sarah. This family ultimately moved to Rappahannock Co, VA. I am trying to find out something about Harrison Golding who seemed to have been in MD prior to 1810. I am also very curious to know whether anyone would have a clue about who Sarah was and whether she married Harrison Golding. Grateful for anything anyone can tell me. Cheers Lynne Simpson Canberra Australia

    1. [MDCHARLE] 9th Annual Norwood Family Reunion and Many other OLD Maryland Families
    2. The following are the 50 or more count of surnames in the Norwood family lines. We have accumulated close to 13,500 descendents of Capt. John Norwood of Maryland and each year we add thousands. And we also don’t have all the branches input yet. Kinzie (50), Davis (53), Green (55), Gibbons (57), Gartrell (59), Hyatt (59), Darby (61), Miller (61), Purdum (61), VanSant (62), Mullinix (64), Falconer (65), Brown (66), Fahner (66), DeVilbiss (72), Thompson (86), Browning (87), King (87), Burdette (89), Hood (96), Mitchell (97), Beall (110), Ford (111), Baker (133), Conaway (134), Smith (134), Brandenburg (150), Hobbs (157), Ridgely (159), Bosley (167), Day (212), Wivell (221), Watkins (267), Moxley (295), Norwood (952) The 9th Annual Norwood Reunion is scheduled for the last Sunday of April, April 29th 2007. Check out the details at the website below—Frederick County Genealogical Society under Special Events. www.frecogs.com/SpecialEvents.htm Because so few of Capt. Norwood’s descendents carry his surname (only 952), this reunion has evolved into an “old families” of Maryland reunion especially the families of Frederick, Montgomery, Carroll, Howard--(the four corners area) and Anne Arundel. But we touch just about every other county in Maryland and Washington DC too! Do you have a relative who happens to have the first name or middle name of Norwood? Wonder where it came from? Maybe they are descendent from a female branch of Norwood. Do you have a great with no surname? My 6th great-grandmother was Elizabeth Norwood who married Nehemia Moxley. At past reunions I have met Beall and Watkins who are closer in relationships to me and we come from different Norwoods. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US—EVEN IF YOU ARE JUST A GENEALOGY FANATIC IN THE AREA. The rest of us are certifiable. The treatment is meeting others that are of like spirit. 1. [MDCHARLE] New HANSON info?
    2. Hello: Been researching my mother's HANSON family. Happened upon Michael Marshall's site and see 2 items I am interested in. 1. John Hanson b. abt. 1630; died 7/1717 & wife Mary. (This is what I have) Michael's site also has him married to an Ann Hussey. I have not seen that before. Does anyone else have this info/source? 2. John Hanson and wife Elizabeth Hussey. I have no other wife for this John Hanson. Site has a 2nd wife of his as Mary Boswell. b. 1671; married 1749. I have a Mary Boswell, widow of John Boswell , married 2nd by 4/1686 to a George Pouncey. Again, where was this info found so I can correct my records. Everytime I think I have the HANSON's straight, something else shows up. Much Thanks Mary

    3. The John Hanson who died 7/1717 wasn't married to Anne Hussey. This mis-understanding was caused by a mis-reading of the records and has long been dispelled. He also wasn't born in Sweden. This, too, was a long dispelled hoax. See my website. The John Hanson married to Mary Boswell (first wife Elizabeth Hussey, widow of first John Gardiner, second Samuel Luckett) was the son of the above John and Mary Hanson. Mary Boswell was the widow of Francis Goodrick and married third Charles Smoot. This pair is my 7G grandparents. I have John Hanson born in Sweden (LDS records). The Mary is Mary Hussey, dau of Thomas Hussey (abt 1630-Oct 1700) whose wife is unknown. I have John Hanson's parents as John Hanson (abt1604-Nov 1632) and Margaret Vasa (abt 1608-?). They had 7 children, one of whom was the pair below, my 6G Grandparents. > > 2. John Hanson and wife Elizabeth Hussey. I have John Hanson married twice, once to Elizabeth Hussey (1666-1667 d. 1748, dau of Thomas Hussey and Johannah Porter) in Nov 1705, Charles Co., and to Mary Boswell (1700-1766, dau of William Boswell and Mary McAtee) bef july 1749. Five children by Elizabeth Hussey and I descend from their daughter Eleanor who married William Hagan bef 1736 and the line is to Aloysia Hagen who m. Richard Gardiner and had Mary Ann Gardiner who m. John Randall Dyer and had Robert Walter Dyer who m. Mary Eliza Cassin who had Mary Roberta Dyer who m. Henry Peyton Howard, my G Grandfather. I have no children of John Hanson by Mary Boswell. But I do have Mary Boswell m to Francis Goodrick, John Hanson and Charles Smoot. She had 7 children by Goodrick, none by Hanson and none by Smoot (as far as I know). Hope this helps. > Again, where was this info found so I can correct my records. > Everytime I think I have the HANSON's straight, something else > shows up. > Much Thanks > Mary

    3. I saw an entry yesterday on the internet on a HANSON HARDY which is a family member of my "Hardy Boys" in Loudoun County, Va. In pursuing that entry I found it went back to a Loudoun deed of mine . LODOUN COUNTY , VA DEED : 9th Oct 1770 WILLIAM GRAYSON to WILLIAM HARDY and wife SARAH and son HANSON HARDY. Lease for 130 acres on Goose Creek. Wit : SOLOMON HARDY, JR. JOHN THORNTON, and HY. POTTEN Upon looking that entry over very carefully and the data went as follows : HANSON HARDY born ABT 1769 in Prince George's County (I don't have a record for that)... Son of WILLIAN HARDY and SARAH HANSON. The HARDY line went no father but the generations on SARAH HANSON went as follows : (1) SARAH HANSON born 11 Feb 1753 in King George's County, died in Loudun County with no date. SARAH's parents and generations were as follows : SARAH HANSON : Parents : JOHN HANSON III and ELIZABETH TYLER, dau of WILLIAM TYLER, SR. and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN Grand parents : JOHN HANSON, JR. and ELIZABETH HUSSEY, dau of THOMAS HUSSEY and JOHANNA (JOAN) PORTER, dau of THOMAS PORTER. Great grandparents : JOHN HANSON. SR. born Abt 1630 died 5 July 1713 in Charles Co. and wife unknown. I have no data to prove or disapprove this documentation. Would anyone on the list know or have any data on this family ?? Thank You, Marianne Dillow

    2. John Lomax
    3. The following info, extracted from one of my books, may be of no use to you: Dr. Gustavus Brown was born 10 April 1689 in Dalkeith, Scotland and came to Maryland in 1708. He began his practice of medicine in Nansemond, married into a wealthy family and became rich. He moved back to Scotland but returned to Maryland in 1734 where he had years before purchased the seat of Col. Lomax, called Rich Hill, four miles from Port Tobacco, Charles Co. He married, first, in 1710 to Frances Fowke, who was born 2 February 1691 and died 8 November 1744, the daughter of Col. Gerard and Sarah (Burdett) Fowke of Charles County. Sarah Burdett was the second wife of Col. Gerard Fowke. His first wife was Mary Lomax. Col. Fowke was born in 1662 and died 20 Jan. 1734. Gustavus Brown died of apoplexy at Rich Hill in April 1762.” [Virginia Genealogies by Rev. Horace Edwin Hayden, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1966. LDS fiche #6046678] Brown was the personal physician of George Washington and a friend and neighbor of Cleborne. The antecedents of Mary Lomax, the first wife of Col. Gerard Fowke, are unknown. That is my connection to the FOWKE family. For my own edification I had followed that family line on the Internet and found the following information (UNKNOWN if any of it is verifiable): Generation 1 Gerard FOWKE (bef. 1750 – aft. 1794), md. Margery SMITH; Children: Gerard, James, Katherine, Sally. Generation 2 Gerard FOWKE , Capt.(1724 CC, MD – 1775/83), md. Sarah HANSON (b. 1728); children: Katherine, Roger, Gerard, Sarah (Sallie). Generation 3 Roger FOWKE, (1696 CC,MD – bef. 1/31/1726/7), md. Ann STONE (b. 1700); children: Mary, Gerard, Jane. Generation 4 Col. Gerard FOWKE II (15 JUL 1662 CC, MD - 20 JAN 1733/34), md. 1st Mary LOMAX (b. ca. 1666), md. 2nd Sarah BURDETTE (b. ca. 1665) on 12/31/1686; children: Gerard III, Ann, Frances, Catherine, Capt. 3. Wm Webster, Jr. m. Ann Turner St. John's Parish Sept 12 1756. John Turner m. Sarah Barker Sept 24, 1762,, same place. Sarah Barker was first m. to Thomas Athey who was first m. to Elizabeth Fenley. This does not answer your question, but it shows Turner relationships to the families mentioned below.
