Does the second deed say that Lucy was the sister of Thomas or was that a considerably-less-than-helpful insertion by the abstractor? If it was a later addition, the abstraction can't be used to "prove" lineage. ----- Original Message ----- From: "marianne dillow" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 10, 2007 10:37 PM Subject: [MDCHARLE] DENT LAND RECORDS IN LOUDOUN CO., VA. > In case anyone is interested the folowing two land deed records are in Loudoun > County, Va. for the DENT family. > > (1) Bk : Pg : F : 298, 300 Date : 18 Apr 1768 Returned to Court : 9 May 1768 > > JOHN DENT and wife SARAH of Charles County, MD to FRANCIS PEYTON of Loudoun > Lease / Release of 1157 acres "Wolf Glade Branch: of Little River, adj CAPT. > JOHN MIDDLETON, THOMAS OWSLEY, > Wit : JOHN WEST, FRANCIS DADE, WILLIAM TEMPLETON, MATTHEW CAMPBELL, JOHN > BALLENDINE. > > (2) Bk : Pg : I : 440 Date : 11 May 1772 Returned to Court : ---- > > THOMAS DENT of Pixatawney, Prince George County to his niece ANN HARDEY (dau > of GEORGE and LUCEY HARDAY (Thomas Dent's sister) of Pixatawaney, Prince > George's County. Thanks to those who responded to me on and off the list on John Dent. Your efforts in my behalf are very much appreciated. I am finding MANY MD names in Loudoun as well as Stafford County in Va which was an earlier county than Loudoun (which was formed in 1757 from Fairfax .) I have also received a new tithable list from Loudoun in which my Solomon Hardy had a tithable in 1768. If he was 21 years of age, his birthdate would be 1746 or earlier. The Solomon that married Rachel Livers was born ca 1732 and I feel that my Solomon was named after him as there is 14 years difference in their ages. The earliest Hardy's in the tithables in Loudoun are the following : (1) Benjamin Hardy in 1760 for 1 tithable...List taken by George West. (2) William Hardy in 1761 for 1 tithable FOR Capt. Wm. Douglass tithables taken 1767 and 1 other tithable in 1762 , List taken by Charles Tyler. The rest of the tithables are in the 1767-1781 range for William Hardy, Sr and Jr. ; Benjamin, James, George and Henry Hardy (spelled both Hardy and Hardy). Some of the Md names that were List takers on the tithable lists are : James Hamilton, George West, Capt. William Douglass, Charles Tyler, William Stanhope, and possibly John Moss, George Summers and Levan Powell ?? The earliest Hardy deed in Loudoun is in 1757 with George Hardy and wife Mary with eldest son George with William Hardy as a witness. I believe this William was in the 1770 deed with wife (possibly Sarah Hanson dau of John Hanson, Jr and Elizabeth Tyler.) and son Hanson Hardy with my Solomon Hardy born ca 1746 witnessing the deed and leasing land on Goose Creek on the same date next to William Hardy. A few months later Benjamin Hardy and wife Mary and son John is leasing land on Goose Creek next to William and Solomon Hardy. In other records in Loudoun the Hardy's have associations with Hanson, Dent, Tyler, Massey, Luke Marbury and Ann Beanes. Edward Trafford, Esq took my George Hardy, Jr and William Hardy, Sr to court in Loudoun in 1762 and 1771. Edward Trafford, Esq from Liverpool knew both Hardy families in Virginia and Maryland because I also found a record where he was in records of the following : William Hardy died 1761...Payments to Edward Trafford, Esq and Sons , merchants in Liverpool. This Wiliam Hardy was born 1722 and died 1757, son of George Hardy and Elizabeth Drane. This William Hardy married Elizabeth Lanham. Upon checking on Edward Trafford, Esq it appears that he was a businessman, Mayor of London in the 1740's for one year and I then found records where he was bringing people from England to Maryland in his ships and one account named him as a slave trader. Whoever Edward Trafford, Esq was, he certainly knew both Hardy families in Virginia and Maryland, and there were some kind of financial transactions with the Hardy families on both sides of the Potomac River. It gives some clues worth looking int. Thanks again to everyone for their replys and the info on these other Maryland names in this posting naming Loudoun are meant for those who might have not known their family members went from MD to Va. Kindly Regards, Marianne Dillow
Marianne, Could it be John Dent and Sarah Marshall? John would be the s/o Geo Dent and Ann Harbert, Sarah the d/o Thomas Marshall and Elizabeth Bishop. The two William and the two Mary Comptons that I have in couldn't be the same couple. I have one William in 1721/22 with wife Mary, second William in 1725/26 with wife Catherine, and Mary Compton mentioned Jan 1727/28 by her brother John Clarke. The two Williams are in Charles County, and Mary (Clarke) Compton is mentioned in St. Mary's County. I have a John Compton married to Mary Clarke, d/o Robert (the state surveyor) and Eleanor Clarke. I can't find any data to support that connection. I have a Mary Compton, sister of John Clarke, mentioned in his Jan 1727/28 will. She is the d/o Thomas Clarke and Anne Barber. I've seen people combine these two Charles County William Comptons into one, and then combine the two Mary Comptons into one, but that doesn't work. I've never seen the documentation, but I've seen statements that in 1724, Luke Clarke, son of Thomas, sued his step-father, Matthew Guibert, for his inheritance and won it for himself and sister, Mary. Perhaps that is where Mary' husband is named. I appreciate all of the effort to help me sort this out. The two Williams are in Charles County, and Mary (Clarke) Compton is mentioned in St. Mary's County. I have a John Compton married to Mary Clarke, d/o Robert (the state surveyor) and Eleanor Clarke. Hi,List, Thank you to everyone for all of the help and info. Thomas was another one of the sons of Robert Clarke, this time by his second wife, Winifred. I have that this Mary was married to William Compton, though I have no data to back up his given name or his connection to the previously mentioned John Compton. There is this deed which shows one William Compton with wife, Mary: p. 199, Charles County Land Records, Volume III Liber H#2, Page 486 29 Mar 1722; Recorded at request of John Chunn, Jr.: 8 Mar 1721; Indenture from Wm. Briscoc, Sam. Chunn, Jon. Fendall; 8 Mar 1721 Wm. Compton and Mary his wife ack. deed; John Chunn paid sd. amount of tobacco. This is getting interesting -- If I combine my database with the incoming information, here are some tentative conclusions: John Gwynn/Gwinn (1641-1684/5) married Sarah (abt 1656-bef 1703). They have John (1672-1734) who marries Ann Groves? (abt 1672-1736) and have two boys and two girls. That Sarah was also married to Thomas Dixon and I have no children for them. That Thomas Dixon was married to Ann (no dates or children for either one in that marriage). That same Ann was married to Samuel Compton (1669-1703), the son of John Compton and Mary Clarke. Hope this helps. - Bye from Bill ---------------------------------- On Apr 10, 2007, at 6:39 AM, [email protected] wrote: > I have a John Gwinn, trasported 1663; died abt 1685, married Sarah > ___?,transported 1668. This is interesting. Mention of the will also appears on a web site: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~evekinn/Compton_1.html (It might not still be active and it is not a primary source). I do note that there is a statement in my database that son John died 1714 and son William, apparently not mentioned, died March 1725. The latter was the one who married Mary Clarke, daughter of Thomas Clarke and Ann Barber. Absence in the will of the father is not necessarily absence of a living presence on the earth! - Bye from Bill Howard On Apr 10, 2007, at 6:33 AM, [email protected] wrote: > I found a will for a John Compton 5/29/1713; 3/5/1718, mentions > sons John & Matthew. > Wit: Philip Briscoe, Sr., Susanna Briscoe & John Farfax > > -------------- Original message -------------- > From: "Norma Lundgren" <[email protected]> > >> Do you have some data that Samuel was the son of John? There is an article entitled " The Hardeys of Early Maryland" by Marion B. Arpee that lists the relatives of Henry Hardy will of 1714 in Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. "Investigation of George Hardey of Loughborough has revealed that he was buried there 17 June 1727 and his will probated 3 July 1727. The list of his children and the dates compiled are from his will and the records of baptisms, marriages, and burials in the Parish of Loughborough " : (1) George, bapt 16 June 1683 (2) Richard (3) Elizabeth Yearby, bapt 17 Jan 1685/86 (4) Ann Smith (5) Henry, bapt 5 Mar 1687/88..... records I received from Leicestershire states his Christening 5 Nov 1687 All Saints, Loughborough, Leicester, England.... Father : George Hardye family (6) William, bapt 23 Feb 1689/90 buried 31 May 1690 (7) Mary, Buried 2 Sep 1697 (8) clare, bapt 1 May 1697 The article goes on to say " Thus we find in Leicester, England, a repetition of the names George, William. and Henry Hardey with a consecration of the given name William in Kegworth Parish in the early 1700's. In the records examined for Leicester, Hardey's were found primarily in the north and north central parts of the county, and the wills examined showed them to have been smiths and craftsmen." " How close the relationship was between William and henry hardy, immigrants to Maryland is not certain." I also received from Leicestershire, England the following record : Henry Hardye married Anne Hall 2 Feb 1638, Loughborough, Leicester, England with no church listed. I wanted to share this article with the list as well as the 2 records I received from Leicestershire, England. Marianne Dillow

Norma and List, I have Samuel Compton (1669-1703) as the son of John Compton (1645-1718) and Mary Clarke. I have Ann, Samuel Compton's wife, married also to Thomas Dixon but no dates on the marriages. Hope that gives a lead. - Bye from Bill Howard On Apr 9, 2007, at 10:33 AM, Norma Lundgren wrote: > Hi, List, > > Changing the subject line from "My Hardy boys and Luke Marbury and > Elizabeth > Hanson" to "Walter Story". > > Since we moved to discussing the Storeys, I have a question: > > Does anyone know how Walter Storey's last wife was shown to be Anne > Hughes? > > Also, does anyone know how Anne's first husband, Samuel Compton > (died before 12 > Jul 1703, Charles County) was related to the St. Mary's County > Comptons and the > family of William Timothy? > > Bye, > Norma > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MDCHARLE- > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message "History is the consensus of survivors in authority" "Reality is the weighted mean of individual perceptions"
