    2. Amanda Douglass
    3. Marianne, I eagerly look forward to whatever you post because your information has caused me to keep digging and I think I'm really starting to see some things that have to be more than coincidences. Just want to say right up front in light of some discussion that I never mean to post information as my own when another has been very nice to share. I'll note this when I cut and paste. I don't claim to know anything--just trying to find answers. Probably won't help anyone but I'm ten minutes from NC Archives and while I'm not very good at all this yet, I would give a try to look up something if somebody needs NC info. 1. [MDCHARLE] Port Tobacco Parish boundary
    2. John Lomax
    3. In the 1775-1778 Charles County Maryland Census (18 years and upward) the Port Tobacco Parish was listed as having a West Hundred and an East Hundred. My information is that Port Tobacco Parish (exact time period unknown) lay between Nanjemoy creek & Mattowoman creek on the west and north and the upper part of Wicomico River/Creek as it continues through the Zachia Swamp on the east side. Does anyone know the (approximate) boundary between the East and West Hundreds? Is my information about Port Tobacco Parish boundaries even close to being correct? Also, in censuses after 1790 is Trinity Parish just a later name for the combined King and Queen Parish and William and Mary Parish?

    2. Betty H. Garbers
    3. Dear List, I have been reading your very informative messages for awhile now. I have been surprised that no one has mentioned the name Harbin or any connections. William Harbin born about 1675 Yeovil, England was married to Alice in Md by 1711 when he had a son named John born Aug 20, 1711. Prince George Co, Queen Ann Parish, Died 01 May 1795, SC. John had two known wives Elizabeth Ann Thomas born 1720 MD and Johanan Jones born abt 1716, PG Co, Queene Ann Parish, MD, died 1736. He may have been married to a Catherine Allen Son Elisha Harbin born 1722 PG Co, MD. He was married to an Elizabeth Allen. Her father may have been a Thomas Allen. Elizabeth may have been a sister to Catherine Allen mentioned above. Margaret Harbin born 1713 to William & Alice. She is listed as being married to a Henry Cambron at The Hall of Records in Baltimore, MD. I do not believe that Henry Cambron was married to this Margaret Harbin. I have found that the right Margaret Harbin may have been in abt 1758. Believe Margaret Harbin and Henry Cambron were married about 1778 MD. They ended up migrating to KY. Edward Villers Harbin was born 1731 PG Co, MD, with wife Mary Villers. Edward Villers Harbin died abt 1804 NC. Edward Villers Harbin married Lydia Darnell. They had a son Edward Villers Harbin born abt 1762. Have no wife listed for 1st marriage of Edward Villers Harbin JR. He was married the second time to Elizabeth Ann Howard in Shelby Co, IN, when he was 72 years of age and they had five more children. Would appreciate hearing from anyone that is knowledgeable of this family. Williams other children Elizabeth, Johanna, William, James, Joshua. William Harbin 1675 & family lived at The Gleanings in MD. 1. [MDCHARLE] Can anyone help piece any of these names to MD lines?
    2. Amanda Douglass
    3. Dear List, As you know, I continue to search for family of Alexander McConchie of Fauquier Co., VA. Most information points to MD but not found connecting thread. There are so many names from MD that show up in Fauquier and Culpeper that surround McConchie and associated lines. (Dent, Knox, Harrison, Berry, Beale, Fendal, Fowke, Jones, Groves, etc.) I have Mary "Margaret" McConchie daughter of Alexander McConchie and Catherine Martin who married Elijah F. Groves, 9 Sept. 1868. Elijah F. Groves son of Armistead W. Groves and Emily Finks if anyone knows about Groves?) In my digging, I happened to notice name Thomas Skinner as neighbor of Stigler and McConchie land in Fauquier. We know that a George Dent and John Knox sold land to Alexander in Fauquier. I have no idea who Alexander's wife "Ann" was but have to check out every surname of associated families of McConchie. Alexander McConchie's son Robert married Mary Ann King. Their son Robert King McConcihe married Elizabeth "Betsy" Stigler. James Stigler was her father. They were parents of my gg grandfather, George W. McConchie. Note on Fauquier records below name Thomas Skinner and I found that name in MD on will of Elizabeth Howard. Then note that her will also has the name Benjamin Douglass spelled with one "s" in one place and two "s's" in last. We've got land record with Douglas right there with our family lines. Elizabeth Howard/CC MD Her will is listed in the Maryland Abstracts and was for 10/08/1716, page 7, Folio 96 is all I have. Elizabeth Howard bequeaths to 1. Elizabeth Howard--niece and goddaughter (daughter of eldest brother of William Stevens Howard) to have 1 silver spoon marked EH and 1 Bible and 1 gold ring with an inscription "prepair to follow IA" 2. Rebecca Dent--goddaughter (daughter of cousin George Dent) to have 1 silver spoon marked MH and 1 Bible 3. Ann Skinner--goddaughter (daughter of Thomas Skinner) - to have 1 Bible 4. Thomas Howard--brother--whereas he has been at considerable expense and charges during testatrix's maintenance both in time of health and in "my many afflictions by sickness" and in that respect has been "both in the place of a father as well as a brother" and for her natural love and affection she leaves the remainder of the estate to her nephew Thomas--son of Thomas--and also names him executor of the will Witnesses: Benjamin Douglass John Groves Ann Dent John Scrogin Edward Gardiner (mark) Then came: Benjamin Douglas, John Groves and Edward Gardiner Note: the testatrix signed the will in her own hand ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My family lines in Fauquier Co.,VA. (Seeing many familiar names that are MD names?) Order Book 1794 Madison Co. An allotment of hands to the several roads between Barrett's road and Kirtley's road and the South River below Elk Run being returned as follows, to wit: Under James Walker Jr. on the road from Wm. Walker's mill to Blunt's path the hands of Wm. Walker Sr., James Walker Jr. Alexander Bradford, John Bradford, John Breedlove, Mary Walker and overseer Robt. Beale, Joshua Lindsey, Mary Rowback, David Cave, Leroy Cannady, James Kirk and Wm. Emmons. Notes for SAMUEL STIGLER: The family did not stay long in King George County but some moved to Culpepper and Faquier Counties of Virginia. We find that James and Martha conveyed to Samuel Stigler Eldeat son 60 acres of land (Deed book 4, King George County, Virginia) 5 April 1764 for and in consideration of the natural love and affection they have for Samuel Stigler. This was the upper part of the larger tract that James Stigler holds, land adjoining that of Thomas Skinner, Joseph Harrison, Robert Peck Jr. and Captain Joseph Strother as by a survey and plot made by Benjamin Berry. Martha, also listed is a statement of fact that this was a Deed of Gift. The following year 2 May 1765, Samuel and Sarah, his wife lease this land to Joseph Harrison for 5 shillings of lawful money of Great Britian, term one whole year to be compled and Joseph Harrison "Therefore yielding and paying unto said Samuel Stigler and Sarah, his wife, the rent of one Ear of Indian Corn upon the feast of St. Michael the Arch Angel if same shall be lawfully demanded to the true intent." (Would really like to find this Harrison line.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We've also got the name Douglas 5. Back on the record from Deed Book 17, p. 548, Dec. 28, 1809, Robert and Eliz. Knox of Charles Co., Maryland to James Emmons of Fauquier Co., Va for 113 pounds for 113 acres of and beginning at James (Emmons presume) land ...to Robert McConchies line...(Robert McConchie married to Mary Ann King) Deed Book 17 pg. 722 Sep. 21, 1810 Fauquier Co. Joseph and Elizabeth EMMONS to William Stone in consideration of the sum of $868.50 for a tract of land...to Ludwells line (now McConchie's Run)...to Downman's line... to Douglas' fence...containing 198 acres. Wit: John and Samuel Blackwell, Nathl. HOMES, George Kemper, and William JONES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I think I'm finding the Jones connection to my McConchie line and they appear to connect with the William R. Jones who was associated with Emmons. Have seen Fendall name in MD associated with MD McConchie and wondering about this Mary Fendall Jones? Additionally I'm seeing the Jones and Marshall names factoring into all this as well. JOHN T. JONES, apptd. by the last will and testament of William R. Jones, dec'd., gdn. of Mary Fendall Jones and William Turner Jones, orphs. of said William R. Jones, dec'd. 25 April 1859. For (So is this William Jones the one below on the Emmons land transation? I'm thinking he is and if so then we have a connection for Mary Fendall Jones . How was John T. Jones related to Charles S. Jones and Henry M. Jones? Were they all sons of William R. Jones? Charles S. Jones married Ann Childs who was daughter of James Childs and Milley McConchie (daughter of Alexander McConchie). $40,000. Set: John H. Rixey, Presley M. Rixey, Charles S. Jones. Henry M. Jones and Samuel Rixey, Jr. Does anyone see any of the Fauquier names connecting to a specific MD line? Thinking that's how I'll get lead to track Alexander McConchie and who his wife "Ann" unknown was? Open to any suggestions as to how to research. Thanks, Amanda

    2. Amanda Douglass
    3. Dear List, Found another reference to a Skinner and would like to add to finding out more about Thomas Skinner line. Just finding so many same surnames from MD in Fauquier associated with our Stigler and McConchie lines. In addition to chasing Skinner and Douglas names, I really need to find where Joseph Harrison may have come from? On Fauquier Chancery Record, Joseph P. Stigler vs. Heirs of George Stigler, I found my gg grandfather George W. McConchie named as heir of Robert King McConchie and Elizabeth Stigler. Also on this record was Henry Harrison, Granville T. Kelly, John Taliaferro, R. H. Allen, Henry Claxton, Granville Coleman, David Coleman and an "infant ____Berry" of guardian Jm. S. Bryne just to name few. One particular record of interest that can be viewed on line with Lib of VA for Fauquier Co.: (It's over 140 pages and some of it hard to read but I'm going back to do this page by page but this was what I got at first glance.) Fauqiuer Chancery Record of Ex.Jonathan Gibson Ex. Benjamin Harrison: Has many names that I believe connect to MD. The Benjamin Harrison I believe to be one. Other names I picked out from inventory were: Richard Beal, Isaac Eustace, James Wood, Hesekiah Oliver, John Shumate, and know that Langhorn Dade connects to Rose Townsend Knox, widow of Capt. Robert Knox. What caught my eye on this record was Hesekiah Oliver found married Margaret (Mahal) Lewis 5/6/1808 d/o Britain Lewis. Robert McConchie, son of Alexander in Fauquier married Mary Ann King and Britain Lewis was brother of Mary Ann King on the marriage bond. John Shumate married a Carey Smoot and his daughter Lucy Shumate married Jonathan Gibson of this Gibson/Harrison record. I'm thinking Harrison line must connect somewhere as we have Elizabeth "Betti" Harrison McConchie married to Silas Neale 18 July 1884. We can't figure out where the Harrison name comes from? 3. Hi, Thanks for the info. So, you surmize that Permelia and John Francis may have been siblings? Actually, Mary Permelia "Polly/Polli" md. Thomas Jabez Wright. This is on my paternal side. I find it interesting about the Ethelbert Bowie connection, he is my maternal g/g/g grandfather. His daughter Mary Selena Bowie md my g/g grandfather William Wedding. My great grandmother (paternal) was Mary Permelia (Allen) Wright. She died in 1906 and "Frank" Allen was her father, as I've seen in the family bible. The closest I can come is John Francis Allen - incidentally, he is buried at Pisgah Methodist Church in Charles Co. This is area would most likely be correct. > > If anyone knows anything about him, I'd appreciate your contacting me. I believe Mary Permelia and John Francis Allen may have been the children of Francis and Anna Allen. The family is together in the 1860 census, but by 1870 Francis had died and Anna was head of the household - also in the household at that time was Richard Wright, Sarah Josephine (Barker) Wright, his wife, and Archard E. Wright, their daughter. Anna married Ethelbert Bowie probably on 11 August 1874 (Charles County Marriages has 1873 but Ethelbert's first wife was still living at that time). 1. [MDCHARLE] Early migrations from Maryland
    2. Peter T. Thompson
    3. Hi List, There have been several recent postings about migrations from Maryland. One not mentioned as far as I know, is that a group of Catholic families left Maryland after the Revolutionary War and established the first Catholic community in the state of Georgia. As near as I can tell this was not motivated primarily by an interest in obtaining land, although several of the people concerned were war vets who had received land grants for their service in the War. Rather, they were encouraged by Bishop John Carroll, who, in Baltimore, had become the first Catholic bishop in the United States. He wanted to help spread Catholicism from Maryland to other states in the new nation. I believe this also helped motivate the migration of Catholic families out of Maryland to Kentucky about the same time. Some of the families involved in the Georgia migration were Thompsons, Semmes, Cratins, Lucketts, Lanhams, etc. One of the leaders of this group was my ggg grandfather, Joseph Thompson, who with his (second) wife, Elizabeth Middleton and all his children joined the trek. Later, many members of these families migrated further west to Alabama and some even made it to Texas eventually. I have visited a lot of the Georgia sites and a few years ago wrote up a history of it for my children. If any of you would find this to be of interest, I would be glad to share it with you. 3. Hi List, My last contact with Vivian Edelen was a Christmas card, still written in that impeccable handwriting! She is quite the lady as several of you have affirmed and I hope she is as spry as ever. One of her daughters, whom I have not met is also quite interested in family history, so that is probably another rich source of history about the Edelen family. Vivian used to be a docent at the Mudd museum and is a treasure trove of Charles County history. Cheers, Pete >I have been very interested in the messages/comments concerning the >Sunnyside Farm and the Edelen family. Did Mary Permelia marry Wesley Wright? Paula
