Here is my Montgomery file including some notes and info and history I added that people have shared with me, including some just now from some of y'all, of which I am very thankful.. Keep in mind I am no professional and I put this file together for my immediate family, nieces, and nephews, and a couple of cousins. The name Montgomery derives from an ancient Norman family, who held the Castle of St. Foy de Montgomery near Lisieux, in France. Tradition asserts that the name can be traced back to a Roman commander called Gomericus. Gaelic Name: MacGumerait Motto: Garde Bien (Watch well) Lands: Ardrossan and Kintryre One theory for the origin of the name Montgomery follows: Among the Viking chieftains who ravaged Europe in the 9th century was Gomeric, son of Ingvar Ragnarson, the King of East Anglia and Northlumberland. Gomeric settled in the Calvadoes area of Normandy and fortified a hill which gave the family its name - mons Gomerici. In 1066 Gomerics's great great grandson Roger de Montgomerie commanded the right wing of the Norman army at Hastings and was rewarded with Chichester, Arundel and the Earldom of Shrewsbury and after several generations descendants arrived in Ayrshire, Scotland around 1160. Roger consolidated his possessions and then invaded Wales, where he captured the Castle of Baldwin, to which he gave his own name of Montgomery. There was later to be not only a town but an entire county of this name. Roger de Montgomerie (Mundegumbrie) was born in 985 and died in 1040, his father was Rogus II Magaus. His mother, Josceline de Bolbec (born: 970 - Died: 1068) was the niece of the great-grandmother of William the Conqueror. Her parents were Osbern de Bolbec and Wevie de Crepon. She and Roger had five sons: Hugo, Robert, William, Roger II and Gilbert. William was killed during the succession war after the death of Robert II, Duke of Normandy. Hugo and Robert met with the same fate. Gilbert was poisoned in 1063 by Mabile de Belleme (Mabel Talvas, wife of Roger II. Roger II inferited the feudal domains). Roger II de Montgomery was born in 1022 in Pontaudemer, France and died 7/27/1094 in Shrewsbury, England. He was married to Mabile de Belleme (born: 1026 in Alecon, France; died: 12/2/1079) in 1048 in Perche, France. They had six children: Sybil de Montgomery (married Robert Fitzhammon - had one daughter name Mabel Fitzhammon), Matilda (Maud) de Montgomery (born: 1041, Montaigne, France; died: 1107 - Married: Robert de Burgh de Mortaigne de Conteville), Robert (Poitevin) II de Montgomery (born: 1054, Alencon, France; died 5/8/1130) and three other unnamed children. Robert II de Montgomery was married to Agnes de Ponthieu (born: 1068; died: 1100). Their children were William III de Montgomery (1090 - 6/30/1171 - married: Alice Aliva Capet (1080 - 2/28/1141)), Ela Adela de Montgomery (1110 - 1174; married: William III de Warenne (1118 - 1148)) and two other unnamed children. The first Montgomery who appears on record in Scotland is Robert, who obtained the lands of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. He appears as a witness in a charter to monastery of Paisley around 1165. It is generally supposed that Robert, a grandson of Earl Roger, accompanied Walter Fitz-Alan, the first high Steward of Scotland, when he came to Scotland to take possession of lands conferred upon him by David I. Eight centuries later the Montgomery's still held lands in Renfrew and Ayrshire. John de Montgomery and his brother are listed on the Ragman Roll, rendering homage to Edward I of England for their estates in 1296. A later Sir John, the seventh Baron of Eaglesham, was one of the heroes of the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, capturing Sir Henry Percy, the renowned Hotspur. According to a vivid Borders ballad, Hotspur and Montgomery met in hand-to-hand combat and Montgomery carried the day. The Percy's paid a great ransom for the release of Hotspur, building for Montgomery the Castle of Polnoon. The hero of Otterburn cemented his good fortune by marrying the heiress of Sir Hugh Eglington, thereby acquiring the Barony of Eglington and Ardrossan. His son, Sir John Montgomery of Ardrossan, was one of the hostages for James I and took for his second wife Margaret, the daughter of Maxwell of Caerlaverock. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Alexander, a member of the king's council who was sent on several important missions to England. He was made Lord Montgomery sometime prior to January 31, 1449. Hugh, the third Lord Montgomery, supported Prince James in the rebellion against his father, James III and fought at the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488. Montgomery was rewarded with the grant of life of the island of Arran and the keepership of Brodick Castle. More honors followed, and in the year after Sauchieburn, he was made Baillie of Bute and Cunningham. Cunningham was claimed by the Glencairns, and a feud arose during which Eglington Castle was burned. In either 1507 or 1508, Lord Montgomery was made Earl of Eglington. He escaped the carnage of Flodden Field in September 1513 and was part of the Parliament at Perth in October of that year which proclaimed the infant, James V, the king. Hugh Montgomery, the second Earl, succeeded his grandfather in June 1545, but died a year later and his son. Hugh Montgomery II became the third Earl. A devout Catholic, the Earl rejected the Reformation and staunchly supported Mary, Queen of Scots throughout her trouble reign. He fought for her at the Battle of Langside, where he was taken prisoner. He was imprisoned and declared guilty of treason, but remained unrepentant until 1571, when he was convinced to accept James VI. He sat in the Parliament in Stirling in September of that year. Twice married, he died in 1585, leaving tow sons and two daughters. His daughter, Margaret, married Robert, Earl of Winston and their son was later to succeed as the sixth Earl of Eglington. Margaret's brother, the fourth Earl, fell victim to his family's ancient enmity with the Cunningham's of Glencairn. In 1586 the Earl was riding from Eglington to Stirling when he was attacked by John Cunningham, brother of the Earl of Glencairn, with several of his close kinsmen and retainers. Eglington was shot dead by John Cunningham of Colbeith. The Montgomery's on discovering the murder, killed every Cunningham that came in their path. Colbeith was pursued and when captured was cut to pieces on the spot. The infant who succeeded his murdered father as the Fifth Earl was brought up by his maternal uncle, Robert Boyd of Badenheath. He was a favorite of James VI. When he died without issue, the Eglington title passed to Alexander Seton as heir of the line. A rigid Protestant, the new Earl of Eglington could not accept the religious policies of Charles I and fought in the Army of the Covenant during the Civil War. He was able to accept Charles II, who had agreed to his Scottish subjects terms concerning religion and he was made a colonel of the King's Lifeguard of Cavalry. He was captured at Dumbarton and remained imprisoned in Berwick until the Restoration in 1660. The thirteenth Earl, Alex Montgomery (born: 3/17/1793 in Fermanagh, northern Ireland) married Hannah Blakely (born: 1800 in Scotland). He organized the first celebrated jousting tournament at Eglington Castle in 1839. He had six children; Eliza Jane (born: 1831), Hannah (born: 1/1/1836), Catherine (born: 1838), Hugh (born: 3/28/1839), Andrew (born: 1840) and James (born: 10/21/1843). His son, Hugh Montgomery, died 5/4/1898 in Rockaway Street, Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts, USA. The cause of death was Brights Disease of the kidneys. Hugh was married to Anna Emma Roberts (born: 4/22/1842 in E. Haverhill, New Hampshire and died 5/27/1939 in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine of senility and a fracture to her thigh). They were married on 11/1/1865 in Woodsville, New Hampshire. They had four children; Hugh S. Montgomery, Charles England (born: 1866 in Greenland, NH), William Andrew (born: 12/12/1866 in Grantham Grafton, NH) and Helen Katherine (born: 7/10/1870 in Seabrook, NH). --------------------------------------------------- NOTE: This info I got mainly from the Clan Montgomery website and Gen. Arthur E. Montgomery, Ret.., my 2nd cousin "once removed", my dad's 2nd cousin. His info comes mostly from his mother Grace Elsie May (Montgomery) Brown's dilligent research. I have read, heard, and recieved much interesting info pertaining to our Montgomery family in places like the Clan Montgomery website, various discussion forums, relatives and fellow genealogical researchers. I hardily give my thanks to all. One of which was Joyce Bennet who lives in Charles County, Md. who was kind and gracious enough to get out and drive around and go look at some cemeteries for me. Thus the tombstone inscriptions for John, James H. Mont, Sr., and James H. Mont, Jr., and Benjamin Montgomery down below. My cousin Anne Tubman Gardiner of Charles Co., Md. said the Montgomerys' home place in Charles Co., Md. was "Mt. Eagle", in or near Bryantown, Md.., and that Benjamin F. Montgomery is buried near his parents in St. Mary's cemetary there. That was proven correct by Mrs. Joyce Bennet. Peter Montgomery came from France to Maryland, but as of now I am not sure if he was of the same family that went to England with "William the Conqueror", of which some later went to Scotland then some later went back to France, etc., or if he is of a branch that stayed in Normandy, France and never went to the British Isles. As for the history of the Montgomery family, their Norman, Welsh, English and Scottish connections, the following sums it up fairly well: In response to the question asking if Montgomerys are English on a Montgomery discussion forum, a lady said this: "This is from memory so bear with me. The first Montgomery to come to Great Britain was Roger de Montgomery/Montgomerie who accompanied his kinsman "William the Conqueror" during the Norman invasion. Of course these two men were from Normandy, France. That was the year 1066 (The Normans defeated the English [Saxons] at the Battle of Hastings in1066). The Montgomerys remained in the area of Wales near the English border untill about 1107 or so where they kept close reigns on their approximately 150 castles throughout England and Wales. It was because of the dispute that arose on the royal succession following the death of King William that the Montgomerys found themselves on the wrong side of the fence. Being a family of extreme power and posing a tremendous threat to the new monarch, all Montgomery lands and holdings were confiscated in England and Wales and many of the Clan were imprisoned. Fortunately at least one Montgomery, an Arnulf I believe, made his way to Scotland. From this man the Montgomerys would soon re-acquire much land and new titles, but this time in Scotland. The first Montgomery home was in Eagleshame, Scotland just south of Glasgow. This was given to the Montgomerys from Watler the High Steward, progenitor of the Royal Stewart Family when one of the Montgomerys married into his family. To the best of my knowledge all Montgomerys came from these Scottish Montgomerys with the exception of those that either returned to Normandy or never left there in the first place. In St. John's Episcable Church in Washington, D.C. there is a Church Pew with Peter's name on it, dedicated to him long ago. See his will below. As much as I have on Peter is that he was a criminal/prisioner, of sorts, and that is why he left France for America. The second is that his father was William and his mother was Anne _____ . I am still early in reviewing and cross checking all of my Grandmother's research. Michael Clark ------------------------------ Another note from Mike Clark: My grandmother claims that the Montgomery family had many issues because they were quite wealthy in France/England, owning much land along a border between two ruling feifs. At one point, they fell out of favor with whomever was ruling their particular lands and Peter was jailed along with other family members. Because of their wealth, they were able to leave imprisionment and reestablish themselves by leaving to settle in America. I need to go back and dig up my notes and see what else she shared in this regard. It wasn't that he committed a crime, it was that their tremendous land ownership was a threat to the ruling family. What I can't reconcile is why he brought his child, but not his wife across the seas. He remarried in the states, but it appears that Margaret and Catherine (his two wives) both had the same last name (hagan). Did he bring his 1st wife's sister to America? Did his first wife die during the voyage to America and her sister was in tow? SO many questions! As far as the Montgomerys owning land and wealth in France and England, I might be able to contribute a tiny bit. I know a little about European history before the Roman conquests, but next to nothing about French history between the fall of the Roman Empire and WW1 other than a few tidbits such as how Normandie came about after Norsemen had taken that section of France. The king of a fledgling France made an agreement with the Norsemen that if they would leave the rest of Franfe alone they could have where they then held, thus the birth of Norseland/Normandie, and thins like when they helped us in the Rev War, etc.. But I have read a bit of English and Scottish history. >From what I have read, when William the Conqueror vied for the conquest of England, culminating with the Battle fo Hastings in 1066AD when he finally defeated the English, he of course moved on in and like most rulers of his era put all his favorite kinfolk, officers, nobles, etc, in high places. I am not sure what the Montgomerys were to him other than the fact that I have read that our Montgomerys were Normans, or even if these Montgomeries/Montgomerys that had settled in England were any kin to ours. But it stands to reason they were. But they were in his favor, several being awarded vast lands, estates, and wealth. I suppose the former owners and rulers, the Saxons, who had taken England by force from the Romanized Britton Celts, became serfs and workers for the new Norman landed gentry and Nobility. Anyway, it has been many a moon since I read up on English history and all this. But if I remember correctly this went on for awhile, with the Montgomerie/Montgomery Clan's wealth, estates, and prestige growing. But when King William died and William's predicessor took over, the Montgomerie/Montgomery Clan fell out of favor with the new Royal Court. I forget the reasons, but it came to a head and their lands and wealth were taken, forfeited to the "Crown". Some were put in jail and some were even executed. The rest fled back to France and other places. There was one branch that had settled in Scotland and somehow they stood up against this and retained their posessions, status, and their heads (if I am remembering my history correctly). I bet it is the same Montgomery family or families that you are talking about. What do you reckon? But it is not known which was first or second or by whom all the kids are from. Since Margaret and Catherine were sisters it really doesn't matter; they were still of the same bloodline. A Ms. Joyce Bennet, whom I met on the internet, was kind and gracious enough to go to the cemetery for me and record what was there and sent it to me. Here is what she said his tombstone says. Note that his obitury said he died on the 8th of Jan. : "Sacred to the memory of Benj. F. Montgomery, Born Oct. 1 (?) 1841, Died Jan. 4 (?) 1883, Aged 38 years 3 months 3 days, Resquiescat in Peace (May he rest in peace), Blessed are the dead who die in the lord." I wonder if the tombstone was hard to read, as she had a couple of question marks as if she was not sure of what it said, perhaps because of the elements over the years. Two or three different sources say he was born in 1844. So perhaps she mistakenly read 1841 when originally it read 1844!!?? Note that his obitury said he died on the 8th of Jan., and said that he was 39 years of age at the time of his death in 1883. The tombstone itself also says he was around 38/39, which would put hisbirth date around 1844, not 1841. -M- (Married 2/20/1868) ANNE JANE GILMORE, B. 3/30/1849-1850 at "Gilmore" in Grant Co., Ontario, Canada.--D. I am not sure if it was a Montgomery plot or Gilmore plot, because there is also a Montgomery Family Plot in "Rock Creek" Cemetery in N. East D.C. where her son Chalres Henry Archibald Montgomery is buried. For her obiturary, see below. Her husband Benjamin was buried beside or near his parents in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bryantown, Md.. I was told that after his death, Anne took the children and moved back to Canada for a while, then eventually moved back to Washington, D.C., never to go back to Bryantown and never let her children know or associate with their Montgomery relatives in Bryantown, etc. I wonder why? Anne Jane Gilmore was from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Thomas T. and Anne (Cuttle) Gilmore. Anne Cuttle was daughter of Sir John and Lady Jane Cuttle of "Arkena", Rockingham, England. I do have information that says Charles County was divided into nine election districts by an act of the MD General Assembly in 1868. This may help get a sense of who was where. Those districts would be 1. Port Tobacco (center of county) 2. Hill Top (west of Port Tobacco) 3. Nanjemoy (west) 4. Allen's Fresh (southeast) 5. Cob Neck (Harris lot) (south) 6 . Middleton (north) 7. Pomonkey (northwest) 8. Bryantown (northeast 9. Patuxent (Hughesville) (east) Sorry, couldn't be any more help. Molly was b. Jun 2, 1854 and died May 24, 1906 and Hilltop would be the correct district (as far as I know). She is buried at Nanjemoy Baptist Church Cemetery. A. A. Allen is most likely Arcanna A. Allen otherwise known as Ann. According to Interment.net - this is a site that has free info on cemeteries in the entire world. Pisgah Methodist just happened to be on there when I was looking around last night. That's when I saw the name of John Francis Allen and remembered that Mollie's father was "Frank".     3. I might be connected to those Berrys. I am not sure which Berry line I am connected to. I have wondered if my gr gr grandfather Thomas Baker Berry came from Va to Md, since I can't find a definate connection to the Charles Co. Berrys or who his parents or line were. I have seen some Thomas Berrys listed in amongst siblings of families, but no Thom. B. Berrys.
