Immigrants, classified as such because they paid their own transportation. Transported didn't mean they were prisoners, it meant their transportation was paid by someone else. They came as indentured servants under contract for a certain number of years with the person who paid their fare. It refers to Wales but the terminology has been more broadly used. The URL is a site commonly used by genealogists: The URL is: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/RG/guide/Wales11.asp • Free emigrants. Beginning in the 1630s, emigrants left Wales to promote trade or set up military outposts and way stations for merchant ships. Later, free emigrants sought opportunity in a new land or fled poverty or oppression in Wales. • Assisted emigrants. From 1815 to 1900, qualified emigrants received passage money or land grants in the destination country as an alternative to receiving poor relief. After 1840 New Zealand and Australia offered money or land grants to skilled workers to encourage immigration. • Transported prisoners. More than 200,000 criminals were conditionally pardoned, exiled, and transported to penal colonies before 1870. Before 1775 over 50,000 prisoners were sent to America, primarily to Virginia and Maryland. From 1788 to 1869 over 160,000 prisoners were sent to Australia. Sorry for my little typo last nite as I actually have the 1677 date also listed in my computer, but when I typed up the message last nite, I had just returned from the Family Celebrations of the Christening of my granddaughter, Gracie Mae Purdum. Hope you can understand after all that crab, crab dip, crab cakes, and there might even have been a beer or two involved, at the Crab Deck on Kent Island. Hey y'all, Who posted this info, or the link thereof? I just wanted to thank you for it in case I forgot to do so and to give you credit for it where I added it to my Montgomery file as an interesting bit of history. It is especially interesting to think that a retired Roman soldier began the Montgomery line. It begins with the following: ------------------- "History of the Montgomery Family: A noble Roman was the root >From which Montgomeries came Who brought his legions from the war And settled same upon an hill 'Twixt Rome and Spain Gomericus by name; >From which he and his offspring do Their sir-name still retain This is a narrative in rhyme from Glasgow, 1770, referring to the origin of the name Montgomery. The name Montgomery derives from an ancient Norman family, who held the Castle of St. Foy de Montgomery near Lisieux, in France. Tradition asserts that the name can be traced back to a Roman commander called Gomericus. Gaelic Name: MacGumerait Motto: Garde Bien (Watch well) Lands: Ardrossan and Kintryre One theory for the origin of the name Montgomery follows: Among the Viking chieftains who ravaged Europe in the 9th century was Gomeric, son of ....................."
Hello Norma, You are welcome Norma. I am glad you found it interesting and/or helpful. You mentioned my Montgomery file having a bit of prose at the beginning. The reason I have all that sort of stuff, notes, explainations, historical notes in my various family files is because originall I put it all togeterh and wrote it for my immediate family; my siblings, my children, and maybe a handful of cousins. I hope y'all don't find it silly or boring. If you think there was a lot on the Montgomery file, you ought to see my Stenhoue Family file, or my Middleton file. I added a good bit about Scottish history, etc., on my Stenhouse file and some Welsh stuff on my Middleton file. In any of my family files I always start off with explanations, a bit of history if I could, etc, for the benifit of my siblings and kids, etc, who probably don't know much of anything pertaining to those areas of history, etc.. Hello Shirley and all, Up to B.F.Montgomery, it was just oral family stuff, but prooved it later with info from other people and sources like the censu of 1850 that is in my Montgomery file. In fact I just sent the file to you. Let me know what you think. You will see in it a note where I say I got the other info mainly from the Clan Montgomery website and from General Arthur E. Montgomery, Retired, my 2nd cousin "once removed", or in other words my dad's 2nd cousin. I and Arthur's kids are 3rd cousins I reckon. Anyway, his info mostly came from him mom who researched for years, Grace Elsie May (Montgomery) Brown. I have read, heard, and recieved much interesting info pertaining to our Montgomery family in places like the Clan Montgomery website, various discussion forums, relatives and fellow genealogical researchers. I hardily give my thanks to all. One of which was Joyce Bennet who lives in Charles County, Md. who was kind and gracious enough to get out and drive around and go look at some cemeteries for me. Thus the tombstone inscriptions for John, James H. Mont, Sr., and James H. Mont, Jr., and Benjamin Montgomery down below. My cousin Anne Tubman Gardiner of Charles Co., Md. said the Montgomerys' home place in Charles Co., Md. was "Mt. Eagle", in or near Bryantown, Md.., and that Benjamin F. Montgomery is buried near his parents in St. Mary's cemetary there. That was proven correct by Mrs. Joyce Bennet. Off and on through the last few years I have gotten bits and pieces of info from some of y'all, which I dearly appreciate. Remember, I just put my family files together for my immediate family, so as to give them an idea of their lines, their people. I am no professional. As far as Peter having three wives, etc., according to Mike Clark Peter married first one and then the other of two sisters. The one was Margaret and the other was Catherine. But it is not known which was first or second or by whom all the kids are from. Since Margaret and Catherine were sisters it really doesn't matter; they were still of the same bloodline. Read the various notes and all in my Montgomery file. They tell a bit of info as to where I got this or that from, or from what individual, etc., and some of it is about the wives and kids, etc.. If he infact married three sisters as I was told, then it is entirely possible that he could have 19 children. David, thank you for the info below--I will add this to my files... I have to admit I am getting awfully confused because I know Natalie Baker worked so hard for so many years on the Montgomerys, and I'm wondering if any "real" new information has showed up that changes her findings...or is all of this just conjecture? What was the justification or proof that Peter had three wives? Doesn't it seem strange to you that Peter did not mention all of his children in his will; or Margaret either for that matter? Is the information you have solely based on oral family history--or is anything documented? I wish I knew how we could see copies of the writings in that Bible that Mary Ellen Blandford has from Zachariah Montgomery. My grouping is according to the childrens' birth years and the marriage years that David assigns to the wives: First wife (name unknown): Mary, Francis and John Baptiste. Hi Shirley M: Natalie Baker documented Mary Magdalene Montgomery as b. 1726. Mary Louise Donnelly's book lists Mary Magdalene Montgomery as b. 26 Jun 1739. (Charles County, Maryland My Colonial Relations Plus Others, pg 212) So, I don't know who is right--maybe someone else can shed some light on this discrepancy. I have a note to myself that Mary Magdalen is mentioned in Stones and Bones, a publication by the Prince George's Co MD Genealogical Society in vol 9, page 76 (I don't have the text of this so I am not sure what this is about). I also have that Mary Magdalen married abt 1750, to John Higdon III (1716-1766). Peter Montgomery's will specifically mentions the daughter, Mary Magdalen Higdon-- "I give and Bequeath unto my Loving Daughter Mary Magdilen Higdon and my Loving Son Elisha Montgomery all the remaining part of my land to be Equally Divided to them and their Heirs forever." This is the only daughter named Mary mentioned in Peter's will. There is no mention of Susannah. Then in Margaret Montgomery's 1773 will she names daughters Mary Montgomery, Mary McAtee, Margaret Turner and Susannah Higdon... I suppose Mary Montgomery refers to youngest dau Anne Mary Montgomery (I have no married name or information for her); Mary McAtee is Mary Ellen Montgomery; Margaret Turner is Margaret Montgomery, and Susannah Higdon presumably is her dau Susannah Montgomery? Question is, could Susannah and Mary Magdelen both have married Higdons, or are they one and the same person? I do not have a first name for the Higdon who married Susannah. Margaret did not mention her son Benjamin who wrote will 1775 and died by 1777; or her son, Charles who went to KY; she did not mention her son Elisha II (he also went to KY); her son, Elisha I died by 1766. James Montgomery who witnessed her will must be her youngest son, James Henry. Joseph and William Montgomery also went to KY, but they are named in the will. It appears she doesn't mention any of Peter's children by first wife, Catherine (correct meif I'm wrong) -- and Peter certainly did not mention several of his children in his own will. It is really confusing to me. I don't have access to the microfilm of Natalie Baker's records until I get back to Utah in June, so I'm stuck as far as trying to check things. I'm also not sure what David M. Edelen has in his file on the Montgomerys since it didn't come through the other day -- so I can't answer Bill Howard's question. I don't think Natalie Baker found any evidence that Peter Montgomery was married three times. I hope we can get this line straight on the list! Shirley P. Here is the Will of Margaret Montgomery: In the name of God Amen. For the benefit of those who don't already have this: Francis Montgomery, the oldest son of Peter, gave his age as 43 years in a deposition made on January 16,1753, when defining the bounds for a tract of land called "Intent" for Elizabeth Hagan. Also Richard Montgomery stated in a deposition of the same day that he was 31 years of age, that he was the brother of Francis, and that he was also a son of Peter Montgomery. (Ref. Land Books, Charles County, #47 B. #3, 1752-1753, page 348.) That would put Peter Montgomery's age at 26 at the time of the birth of his oldest son, Francis. To Amanda Douglass, I did some research in Fairfax County, Virginia and found there was a Townsend Dade in Truro Parish. He was part of the Vestry in 1765 and he bought pews in the Alexandria Church in 1773. The Dade's married into the Washington family. In fact Townsend Dade went to church with George Washington. I have a record where my William Hardy was in Fairfax County with the Washington's right before Loudoun County, Va was formed from Fairfax in 1757. My Hardy's lived in Cameron Parish on Goose Creek in Loudoun and this is where Thomas Dent bought 223 acres as a gift for his niece Ann ( married ....Gordon) daughter of George Hardey, Jr. that married Lucy Dent's (sister of Thomas Dent.) The land was on Goose Creek also. This was in 1772. Then in 1800 Ann Hardey Gordon was in Georgia. So, there is a small summary of things I researched tonight that shows associations. Also Robert H. Harrison and Thomas Harrison were in the Loudoun fee Book 1762-1765. I hope this helps some. Marianne Dillow
Shirley, I assume you are referring to the long message posted by David Middleton Edelen, when you say in a message to Bill Howard that you haven't seen it. You replied to it, so I think you did see it. It had a great deal of prose at the beginning, then a descendant list for Peter, giving spouses, BMD dates for his children and other descendants. You mentioned birthdates of Francis and John Baptiste given in a Bible. What were those dates? Also, you mention Elisha I and Elisha II. Were those the persons David had born in 1743 and 1745? David shows a set of twins, Margaret and Elisha born 14 April 1743, both of whom died the same day. Then he shows another Elisha born 5 Apr 1745. David also showed Joseph and Mary born 12 Nov 1737 as Margaret's first born. Thank you for the information you have been posting. It is very useful! I think people conclude that Peter had 3 wives because wife Catherine wasn't made a citizen along with Peter and his two oldest sons. Actually, all that naturalization tells us is that Peter and the two sons were born in France. If Catherine was English, and other children were born in England or Maryland before their father's naturalization, would they have needed to be naturalized, too? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 11:33 PM Subject: Re: [MDCHARLE] Bej. In those days, Sr. and Jr. and Yst (youngest) didn't denote father, son, grandson. They just meant the oldest, next oldest, and youngest in the jurisdiction who were old enough to participate in legal proceedings. I am trying to find information regarding the marriage of Dr. James Johnstone, b. ca 1660, Annandale, Scotland, and Mary Hanson. I assume they were married in Charles Co., MD. The author of the book I have referenced below states that he was buried in Charles Co., MD. Mary (Hanson) Johnston died 1769 in Fairfax Co., Virginia. Her will was proved in 1770. Dr. James Johnstone, Charles Co., Maryland is my ancestor. LDS Salt Lake City has a copy of a book, "Stapp and Allied Families", compiled by Jennie F. Downing Crow. Part 2 relates to Johnston & Related Families. Page 184, states that Dr. James Johnstone, an adherent of Lord Baltimore settled in Maryland in the latter part of the 17th century, from Annandale, Scotland. His second wife was Mary Hanson. One of their children, George Johnston, Sr., prominent lawyer in Alexandria, Fairfax Co., VA, 1st wife Margaret Thompson. She died about 1745. He married his second wife, Sarah McCarty about 1749. She is the daughter of Dennis McCarty and Sarah (Ball) McCarty. Is there anyone on this list researching this family? I really appreciate any information you can share. Thanks. Beverly
I found the following two records that gives a better description of my Hardy family on Dividing Run : (1) Charles County Land Records Vol. 2 p 325 : Recorded 29 Apr 1738. 24 Apr 1738 from JOHN HARDY of CC, to FRANCIS MONTGOMERY of CC, for 4000 lbs tobacco, a tract of land called Dividing Run, and lying in CC on the east side of Zackaiah Swamp, being part of MR. WILLIAM BOARMAN's MANOR, laid out for about 50 acres. Signed - JOHN (+ his mark) HARDY. Wit : Henry Hawkins, Allen Davis. Sixty one years later : (2) Charles County Land Records 1786-1790 Vol 10 p 587 : 22 Sep 1789 from HENRY HARDY of Prince George's County, to DOCTOR EDWARD SEMMES of CC, 2 parts of a tract of land in CC on Dividing Run, called Boarmans Manor, bounded by the east side of Zachaiah Swamp, the north side of a fresh run called the Dividing Run, the Main Road that leads from Brian Town to the New Brigs (Bridges) of Zachaiah Swamp, containing about 103 acres, and beginning for the other part of the sd tract at a bounded red oak standing on the east side of Zackiah Swamp and on the north side of Dividing Run, containing about 50 acres. Signed : HENRY HARDEY Wit : John Smith Brookes, Thos. Boyd This deed was acknowledged by HENRY HARDEY in Prince George's County. Jno. Read Magruder, Clk Prince George's County Court, certified that afd Brookes and Boyd were PRG JP's. Recorded 8 oct 1789. Marianne Dillow
Here is a little something I've put together from number a number of various sources. Hope I haven't got people mixed up. Zachary Wade was born about 1627 in probably Warwickshire, England. He died in 1678. Zachary Wade settled in Maryland in 1641 as a servant of Mistress Margaret Brent. He was employed by Col. Giles Brent at Kent Fort Manor on Kent Island, Maryland. He remained on the island after the Brents were ejected in a land dispute by Col. Robert Claiborne in 1644 and then returned to the Brent's service after Claiborne was ejected in his turn in 1647. Wade's Point, on Eastern Bay, below Claiborne, is so called from its first owner Zachary Wade, one of Claiborne's Kent Island colonists, who crossed over from Kent Island to Talbot in 1758 and took up a tract of 400 acres (1.6 km2) upon which he settled. He later lived at Newton, St. Mary's County and served as Margaret Brent's steward at St. Gabriel Manor in St. Mary's County. He was settled by 1661 on land near the mouth of the Pomonkey Creek in Charles County that he bought from Winganatto, King of the Nanjemoys. He became a lawyer. He was a member of the Maryland Assembly and served as sheriff and justice of Charles County. He was sent by the Assembly on a mission by ship, probably to Virginia, to procure a copy of the statutes of England. He held more tha 5,100 acres of land in Queen Anne's, Talbot, Charles, and Prince George's County. He was married to Mary Hatton. Cheers, Michael Kent Island, Maryland
Hi, Shirley, While I agree with you about the 12 children of Margaret, I differ on the others. If I take David Middleton Edelen II's extensive list, including Peter Montgomery having three wives, I find the following. My grouping is according to the childrens' birth years and the marriage years that David assigns to the wives: First wife (name unknown): Mary, Francis and John Baptiste. Second wife (Catherine): James, Peter, Richard and Mary Magdalen. Third wife (Margaret): Basically your list. Nope. In the will abstracts, the proven date is given as 2 May 1677, but that is rather obviously an error. It is among other abstracts for May 1678. I think he appears in the archives after May 1677, but I could be wrong. I no longer have in my notes the years he served in the legislature and the new search engine for the archives is a stone cold bummer to find anything. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 5:38 PM Subject: Re: [MDCHARLE] Zachary Wade > Wasn't his will dated: 3/5/1677 and probated 5/25/1677? > > -------------- Original message -------------- > From: "D Michael Johnson" <[email protected]> > >> Here is a little something I've put together from number a number of various >> sources.
