    1. [MDCECIL] Hackston Patent

    3. I received word a few days ago informing me that the earliest date of the patent for "Hackston", an 800-acre tract of land patented in Cecil County, Maryland by Sepherijn HACK, which had been indexed with an incorrect date (1666) in Plats.net, is now corrected to 1658. See Patent Record Q page 457 (MSA S 1586-1287). I had asked the Maryland land records people to re-examine the original document, which they did, and found that this patent was dated 1658, rather than 1666, which was the year listed in the Plats index until today. I had asked them to check the original of this land record, since a date of 1666 would have been about five years after the death of the owner, Sepherijn HACK. The date of this patent is significant to HACK researchers because Severijn HACK, younger brother of Dr. Joris "George" HACK (the one married to Anna VERLET), had been killed by Indians "neere the Iron hill vpon the Easterne Shoare" in 1661. Severijn HACK was one of four men travelling from New Castle on their way back to their plantations in Maryland when this incident occurred. See Maryland State Archives, Volume 3, "Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1636-1667" pp. pp 414-415 and pp 432-433. I think this "Iron Hill" is the one which retains the name even today, located in what is now Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Note that Patent Record 4, p. 515 [MSA S 1586-1288], also in the name of "Hack, Stepherin" (as the index has it) probably also needs correction from 1666 back to 1658. George HACK and John Nicholas HACK appear to have been connected with "Hackston" a few years later. This is Severijn's brother's family. I have not seen any of these records personally --this here was just a correction made to the index by the Plats people after checking the original. Every little bit helps. Just a brief family tree to put this into genealogical context: Severijn HACK and Catrijna Verlet, probably born in the 1590's had: i. Dr. Joris "George" HACK, said to have been baptized 1620 in Koln (Cologne, now Germany), who married Anna VERLET. This family emigrated to VA/MD. Joris died ca1665 in Accomack County, Maryland, leaving children who had many descendents. ii. Daniel HACK, bapt. 19 Apr. 1622 - Amsterdam, Netherlands [Nieuwe kerk] iii. Anneken HACK, bapt. 16 May 1623 - Amsterdam, NL [Nieuwe kerk] iv. Francois HACK, bapt. 18 Sept. 1625 - Amsterdam, NL [Oude Kerk] v. Peter HACK, bapt. 14 Nov. 1627 - Amsterdam, NL [Nieuwe kerk] vi. Francijna HACK, bapt. 3 Mar. 1630 - Amsterdam, NL [Nieuwe kerk] vii. Anna HACK, bapt. 3 March 1630 - Amsterdam, NL [Nieuwe kerk] viii. Severijn HACK, bapt. 23 August 1633 - Amsterdam, NL [Nieuwe kerk]; died 17 April 1661 at Iron Hill. Transported*** to VA or MD in 1658 by Dr. George (Joris) HACK. This Severijn is the one who patented the land in Cecil County ("Hackston" above) in 1658. I have never heard of any marriage of this Severijn HACK. He died at age 27. *** I need the record of this transportation, if anyone can find it. Except for Dr. Joris "George" HACK and his young brother, Severijn, I am not aware that any others of the above HACK family emigrated to the American Colonies. But it's possible. There was at least one other HACK family in Amsterdam in the same period as the above family: the Jacques HACK family included one son, Severijn (possibly the oldest, bp 1616), and a Jan (bp 1625) as well as several other children. There was a John Van Hack or Van Heck who had a patent in this era (1663) for "Hackland" in Somerset County, Maryland. I know of no connection to the Joris Hack family but would like to know more. His mother m2 George Mee. Anyway, for those following the first generation of HACKs in the US, this correction in the land record is for Severijn HACK. Best wishes, Liz J

    3. "The Early Settlers of Maryland" by Gust Skordas states that Sefryn Hack was transported to Maryland in 1658. Sefryn was described as the brother of Dr. George Hack who also immigrated to Maryland in 1658. Dr. George died prior to 1665, leaving a widow, Ann who married - Bool of Virginia, Doctor in Physick. The reference for both of these entries is Liber 4 folio 17 which is Volume 4 of the Maryland Patent series - originals located at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. Sefryn and George are the only individuals with the Hack surname in this reference book. "Inhabitants of Cecil County, Maryland 1649 - 1774" compiled by Henry C. Peden lists naturalizations on page 32 as follows: Naturalized May 1, 1666 Anna Hak born in Amsterdam, Holland; Greorge and Peter, both sons of Anna and born in Accomacke, Virginia. Under Land Patents and Certificates (same source), there is George Hack- 1662 - Hackston 800 acres; Sepherin Hack - 1666 - Hackston - 800 acres; John Nicholas Hack - 1676 - Hackston - 800 acres; Peter Hack - 1684 - Hack's Addition - 150 acres Iron Hill is located just south of I-95 at Newark, Delaware - and near the Maryland-Delaware border. Please note there is no Accomack County in Maryland. Hope this will be of some help. 3. Thank you Mary. That was very helpful. I especially appreciate the reference in the MSA for the Hack transportation. > Please note there is no Accomack County in Maryland. Accomack County is in Virginia, on the Eastern Shore. Part of that county became part of Maryland after a boundary change, I forget what year. > Hackston 800 acres; Sepherin Hack - > 1666 - This date (1666) of the "Hackston" patent has recently been changed to 1658. Severijn Hack died in April 1661. George Hack must have inherited "Hackston" by 1662. It would be great to see the originals of these records. Thanks again for the help. Liz J
