Hi all, Can anyone locate these three parishes for me? My family lived near or in Rising Sun. Which would be close if any? When the Established Church of England, or Anglican Church, [predecessor of the Protestant Episcopal Church of America] was established as the Church of Maryland in 1692, Cecil County was laid out as North Sassafras Parish. When founded North Sassafras Parish covered North Sassafras Hundred, Bohemia Hundred and Elk Hundred. The Parish Church was dedicated in 1705 as St. Stephen's which name was eventually used in reference to both the church and the parish. In 1706 North Elk Parish was established for the inhabitants of Cecil County north of the Elk River. Thus Cecil County was delineated into two parishes. With the erection of the Parish Church of St. Mary Anne's at North East the parish became known as St. Mary Anne's Parish. According to George Johnston in his History of Cecil County Maryland the records previous to 1743 were destroyed by fire. However one will note that a great number of births, deaths, and marriages, predate this. The information above is copied from the author's (Henry C. Peden, Jr.) introduction in the book. Thanks Ellen and list. I begin to see the pattern. My Bings were in Cecil before 1742 so this is most helpful.
