There was a Veronica van Bebber, whose baptism is said to have taken place on 26 October 1692 - St. Stephen's Parish, Cecil County, Maryland. She is related to Isaac van Bebber. Which Veronica is she?? Many folks think she is Veronica, the daughter of Isaac (Jacobsz) van Bibber and Isaac's wife, Fronica Schumacker (daughter of Peter Schumacker). The marriage date of Isaac van Bibber and his wife, Fronica Schumacker is said to be 28 May 1690. But I think this 1692 baptism must really be the baptism of Fronica Schumaker herself, as an adult. This makes a big difference, as Veronica van Bebber (the daughter) was married to John Birmingham (on March 14, 1726 I believe), who died about 1732 or -33, then to Adam Peterson of Middletown, Delaware, after that. Is there some way to check on this baptism of 26 October 1692?? If I could see the exact wording of this record it would be very good; even a double-check would be helpful. Thanks very much, Liz J
Liz, I don't see a baptism for Veronica van Bebber at all in "Early Anglican Church Records of Cecil County, Maryland." That date is for Jacob vanBebber son of Isaac & Fronika and appears on page 25. That is also the only place Fronika is mentioned in the book. Isaac's admin. account mentions a daughter Veronica who married John Birmingham. Thanks Ellen. It's interesting --Tim R just sent info about records of St Stephens. I checked in MSA, and see that the St Stephens records seem to start in 1694!! Then in another post yesterday you sent info from Peden's introduction: According to George Johnston in his History of Cecil County Maryland the records previous to 1743 were destroyed by fire. So records previous to 1743 might not have survived anyway. Makes me wonder where the 1692 date came from! > That date is for Jacob vanBebber > son of Isaac & Fronika and appears on page 25. That is also the only place > Fronika is mentioned in the book. Okay, I see where there has been a typo. Please excuse me for asking for the lookup again. I wonder, if the baptism of Veronica van Bebber (Isaac's daughter, not his wife) has been lost. I still think Veronica must have been born after, and not before, her siblings. Records from the Parish Registers of St Stephen's and St Mary Ann's Episcopal Churches in Cecil County, MD --I think these are from LDS Film #0013887: Children of Isaac van Bebber and Fronica Schumacker: Jacob, bp. 26 October 1692 -- named after Isaac's father, Jacob van Bebber Hester, bp. 9 May 1693 -- named after Isaac's grandmother, Hester Op den Graff Peter, bp. 25 May 1695 -- named after Fronica's father, Peter Schumacker Christiana, bp. 15 August 1698 -- named after Isaac's mother, Styntie (Christina) van Dulcken (Jacob van Bebber's wife) Isaac, bp. 5 July 1701 -- named after Isaac's grandfather (husb of Hester Op den Graff) Then (the daughter) Veronica, I think was born sometime before 1706 (where is that record??), and named after her own mother, Fronica Schumacker or named, perhaps, after a previous Fronica in that family. > Isaac's admin. account mentions a daughter Veronica who married John > Birmingham. Yes. John Birmingham supposedly died 1733; the marriage of Veronica and John Birmingham was (supposedly) 1726. I don't know what church or record that would be in. After she was widowed, Veronica married second to Adam Peterson the younger, the only son of Andrew Peterson and his first wife, Lydia Williams-Neering. The marriage of Veronica VB to Adam Peterson has to have been after John Birmingham died, and not previous to the marriage to Birmingham --see this land deed: New Castle County Delaware Land Records 1749-1752. By Carol Garrett. Pg. 5 18. Deed. 16 Jan 1747. Doctor Hugh Matthews of Co. of Phila. In Prov. Of Penn., for the sum of 430 pounds, sold unto David Witherspoon of St. George's Hun. in Co. of Newcastle on Del., Esq, two tracts of land in sd. St. Georg's Hundred & Co. These are the two tracts of land recently purchased from Adam Peterson and Veronica his wife. Signed: Hugh Matthews. Wit: Thomas Sloss, Geo. Stevenson. Ack: Feb Term 1747. Rec: 24 Apr. 1749. So, Dr. Hugh Matthews sells land in 1727 to David Witherspoon, which he had ***recently*** purchased from "Adam Peterson and Veronica his wife." Witherspoon is Adam's stepmother's husband, because since about 1728, Andrew Peterson's second wife was Hester van Bebber. Andrew Peterson died early in 1741, after which Hester VB married David Witherspoon. Hester van Bebber was Veronica's first cousin, since Hester's father was Hendrick (Jacobsz) van Bebber and Veronica's father was Isaac (Jacobs) van Bebber. Well, gee willikers. My apologies for the typo about the baptism of Veronica. But at least it gave me another opportunity to look at some of these Van Bebber / Peterson relationships. If anyone would like to comment on any part of this, please do. Thanks again to Ellen for checking Peden's book. Liz J
I believe that the records for *St. Mary Anne's Parish* were destroyed in a fire, not for St. Stephen's. St. Stephen's has lots of records prior to 1743.
