    1. Re: [MDCECIL] MERRITT and Alexander

    3. Many posts recently have contained names of much interest to me. I haven't found an exact match but I keep hoping. Merritt is another of my mystery names. The 1850 Maryland Census for Cecil Co. shows my Catherine Alexander, age 3, living with Abel Merritt age 26 and Mary Merritt age 56, John Merritt age 17. In 1860 Catherine Alexander age 14 was living in Kent Co., Maryland, [First election district--Chesterton Post Office]. She was living with the family of Abel J. Merritt age 38 and his wife Martha age 37 and Marietta age 1. Also living with them was John W. and Charles L. Moffett ages 13 and 11 respectively. [1840 census has a Spencer Merritt who on a later census has a wife, Mary, living next to a James Moffett in Kent Co., Maryland. Maryland Marriages 1655-1850 shows Spencer Merritt married Mary Riley on 10 Mar 1824 in Kent Co., Maryland]. I was speculating that Spencer's wife might be the Mary Merritt age 56 in 1850. There were two Abel Merritts in Warwick in the 1880s, but I haven't proved either of them are the same Abel Merritt mentioned above. In 1870, Abel J. Merritt age 47 and wife Martha age 47 [he says he was born in Delaware and she in Maryland] with children Marietta age 11, George H. age 9, Martha H. age 7 and Polly Janis Merritt age 5 all children born in Maryland, were living in Galena, Kent Co., Delaware. If anyone has connections to this Merritt branch, I would like to know more about them.
