In an obituary from 1932, it says that a relative was a member of Venus Council No. 44, Sr. O. U. A. M. Can anyone tell me what "Sr. O. U. A. M." means? Thank you! Cathi
Cathi, From a Google.com search, I found that OUAM was the Order of United American Mechanics, founded in 1844 to subvert the hiring of cheap foreign labor. It was essentially anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic. There is a good description of a Junior OUAM history at http://www.phoenixmasonry.org/masonicmuseum/fraternalism/jr_aoum.htm John ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 07, 2003 7:04 PM Subject: [MDCECIL] What is O.U.A.M? > In an obituary from 1932, it says that a relative was a member of Venus > Council No. 44, Sr. O. It's a fraternal organization like the Masons or Oddfellow's: OUAM - Order of United American Mechanics (Sr. probably meaning Senior since there are also Junior organizations) Christopher ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, June 07, 2003 7:04 PM Subject: [MDCECIL] What is O.U.A.M? > In an obituary from 1932, it says that a relative was a member of Venus > Council No. 44, Sr. O.
