    1. Re: [MDCECIL] Mary Levy Milligan's Journal and Cloud Bible1801-1848
    2. Ellen Ward
    3. Arlen and others, Mary Levy Milligan was the daughter of Judge John Jones Milligan (1795-1875), who was born on Bohemia Manor. Her grandfather was Robert Milligan of Bohemia Manor. Mary's mother was Martha Levy (1798-1889), who was the daughter of Judge Moses Levy of Philadelphia and Mary Pearce (b. 1762 Cecil County). Mary Pearce was daughter of Henry Ward Pearce Sr. and Anastasie Carroll. =========================== John Jones Milligan was b. 10 Dec 1795 at his father's residence, Bohemia Manor, Cecil Co., MD. He attended the old academy in Wilmington and later St. Mary's College in Baltimore, and still later Princeton College, grad.1814. John studied law in the office of his brother-in-law, the Hon. Louis McLane, and was admitted to the bar in New Castle Co. in Dec 1818.He was unable to practice law immediately due to a breakdown in his health. Elected to Congress in 1832, served 3 terms, and after that he served as Assoc. Judge of the Superior Court for the county, where he served for 25 years. He retired to Philadelphia where he died 20 April 1875. [Bill & Martha Reamy, Genealogical Abstracts from Biographical and Genealogical History of the State of Delaware (Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1998.), page 425.] =========================== The name, Bohemia, which appears frequently in Cecil County, is associated with Augustine Hermen who came to this country from Bohemia which then became Czechoslovakia. His holdings included the land on which the house "Bohemia" now stands. Bohemia, on the State Road before crossing the Bohemia River, stands on a slight eminence by the south shore of the Bohemia River, opposite the junction of its two branches. The original grant was made in 1695 to Hugh McGregory of Cecil County. His son, Joseph, sold the land, then called "McGregory's Delight", in 1740, to Colonel John Baldwin. According to the approximate date of 1745, set as a building time, the present house was erected by this gentleman. He deeded it to his daughter, Catherine, who married George Milligan, of Chestertown, and for many years it was known as Milligan Hall. http://www.bcpl.net/~ellen/bohemia.html Any corrections and additions are always welcome! 1. [MDCECIL] Early Anglican Church Records --double-check??
    2. E Johnson
    3. Can sks do a double-check of a record in Henry Peden's book, "Early Anglican Church Records of Cecil County, Maryland." I would like to see if what i have in my database is what was actually in the book. This should be on pp. 24-25. My question is --on this page here, is the Peter Van BEBBER, b. 25 May 1695, really listed as the son of "Jacob V Bebber" ??? --and "Fronika his Wife" ?? Does it really say, "Peter V Bebber Son of Jacob V Bebber and Fronika his Wife was born on 25 Day of May A. D. 1695." ?? If so, there has been an error, because it was Isaac (Jacobs) Van Bebber, son of Jacob Van Bebber, whose wife was Fronica Schumaker, who had a son Peter Van Bebber in that time frame. If the record is wrong, that would probably be because somewhere along the line of making this record, the patronymic (father's name) of Isaac Van Bebber (Peter's father) was inadvertantly used, rather than his actual name. Isaac Van Bebber's father (grandfather of Peter) was Jacob Van Bebber. The birth record should say: Peter van Bebber, son of Isaac [Jacobs(on)] Van Bebber and Fronika his Wife, was born on 25 Day of May A. D. 1695. Thanks in advance for the help. Liz J

    3. Last night I was going through some information I filed away after a research trip last year. I found copies I made of "Mary Levy Milligan's Journal" which includes a lot of genealogical information and one page of names/dates from Cloud family Bible with dates from 1801-1848 - two families with birth dates: William and Ann Cloud family and Lot Cloud and his wife Rebecca. Mary Levy Milligan's Journal includes family lines but no proof. Families mentioned are Ward, Pearce, Carroll, Levy, Milligan, Sewall, Lowe, Baldwin, Peterson, and the Bancroft descent from William Dyre. Mary L. Milligan says, "This book was given to me by Robert Bancroft with a request that I should enter in it any reminiscences of members of our family which I can collect or remember to have heard from my grandmother or other elderly relatives." If you are interested in any of these names I'll be glad to post the information. Ellen Ward

    1. [MDCECIL] Lord Baltimore's Plantation
    2. Alan Buckingham
    3. Hello All, I came across a book recently titled "The Beginnings of Lord Baltimore's Plantation in Maryland" that was written c1634. The wording is still in the old English so it's a bit of a hard read, but a fascinating account of life at that early time on the "frontier". My Nowland family came over in to MD in the late 1600's so it is especially interesting to see what they had to deal with at that time. I have scanned the book and placed it on my web site for anyone who is interested. It is at http://www.midatlanticarchives.com Also, if there are any other Nowland descendants out there I would love to hear from you. Alan -- No virus found in this outgoing message. 1. [MDCECIL] Elkton Universalist Church
    2. More data in from a helpful church historian: In Miller's book THE LARGER HOPE…he mentions that the Universalist church in Elkton was established by Otis A. Skinner sometime in the early 1830s. James Shrigley was the pastor of the Baltimore Universalist Church from 1841 – 1850. He lived in Catonsville, MD in 1854 as a supply pastor. From 1858 -1860 he was a supply pastor in Richmond, Va., and was also listed in Richmond in 1874. In 1877, the only rural Universalist church in Maryland was in Chesapeake City. The 1846 (written in 1845) “Universalist Companion” mentions Maryand has three societies, 3 meeting house and 2 preachers. The 1850 (written in 1849) “Universalist Register” still mentions three meeting houses; naming them as Baltimore, Elkton, and Woodsboro. There were no ministers in the state, Brother Henry Fitz (lay preacher) having died in Baltimore. 1871 (1870) lists Shrigley as the preacher at Elkton 1877 (1876) lists the building in Elkton 1893 (1892) no listing for Elkton Now to see if the church structure in Elkton still stands... 1. Re: [MDCECIL] Universalist Church in Cecil County
    2. More data just in from a Unitarian Universalist historical researcher! There was both a Chesapeake City Universalist Church and an Elkton Universalist Church. The Elkton Society was around before 1849 however, and the Chesapeake City was not. The 1871 Universalist Register (compiled in 1870) lists Chesapeake City (occasional services) brick meeting house worth $400 that seats 300 - pastored by James Shrigley (who was the preacher of the Elkton church). He lived in Philadephia and was the secretary of the Pennsylvania Universalist Missionary Society. The 1877 Universalist Register (compiled in 1876) lists the value of the meeting house (now $500) - lists Rev Shrigley's address as Philadelphia. The 1893 Universalist Register (compiled in 1892) lists the Chesapeake City Church as dormant (the building is now worth $3,000). Rev Shrigley is alive at 1901 Mt. Vernon Street in Philly. The church building itself was on the northeast corner of Union & Biddle Streets in Chesapeake City, as shown on Martanet’s 1858 map as “Universalist Ch.” What was confusing (doubly so since I missed that item on the map) is that the same term “Universalist Ch” appears on the map up near what is now the Brantwood Country Club. Evidently that northerly dot was just the burying ground, which appears to have been on private property (perhaps of one of the members) and was never deeded over to the church trustees (at least as far as I can tell so far from the land records indices). This fits in with information from the family that eventually obtained the cemetery property – they said that there was no building there in the early 1900’s, only “a few feet of the foundation walls” and these walls were likely just cemetery walls. Topographic map data indicates that the former cemetery is off of the current Terrell Lane, not Bull Frog Lane, as previously sounded likely since Samuel Ward’s 1879 obit. said that the cemetery was “near the Bull Frog.” The deed that I did find (RCH/4/289) was dated 10/1/1851. The lot in Chesapeake City was sold by Robert Polk and his wife Margaret, of Delaware City, Delaware, to the “Trustees of the First Universalist Society in Cecil County in the State of Maryland,” (the trustees being William Taylor, David M. Taylor, Isaac A. Lum, John H. Biddle, and Benjamin C. Biddle.). Now to find out if the church building still stands in Chesapeake City... They moved to Kent Co Del in 1748. Rebecca ELIASON and John WOODS ended up in Kent Co as well. Robert died in Dec 1761. I do not know when Catherine died. They had 8 children. I can send details on this family if you are interested. Paul Reddick N. Andover, MA

    3. Cornelius ELIASON was baptized on 3 September 1679 in the Dutch Reform Church of New York (city). His parents were Elias Cornelisen and Lysbeth Meyer, who was the daughter of Jan Dircksen Meyer and Tryntje Andriesse Grevenraet of Holland and New Amsterdam/New York city. This Eilas Cornelissen had a sister, Geertie Cornelissen (b. about 1650), who was the wife of Symon Aertszen DeHART. So the DeHARTs who descend from Symon Aertszen are cousins of the Cecil County/New Castle County ELIASONs. Cornelius ELIASON married Margaret _____ in 1703, St. Stephen's parish, Cecil County. He had several children, if I am reading his will abstract correctly, these: Elizabeth (Cage), Elias (married to Annah?), Cornelius, Susanna (married Abraham Armstrong), Mary (married Abraham Williams), Rachel (Dawson), Rebecca (married John Wood or Woods), and Catherine (married Robert Reddick). Help with the spouses and the families of these children would be appreciated. But Elias Cornelisen and Lysbeth Meyer had another son, Johannes ELIASON, baptized on 14 January 1682 in the Dutch Reform Church of New York (city). Did this Johannes (John?) ELIASON also move to Maryland or to a nearby area in Delaware? Did their parents move to the area? Did they have moe children? Is there a John ELIASON who married in the St Stephan's parish area (or in New Castle County) in the 1700 to 1710 or 1720 range? I know there were some later John ELIASONs in the area, but I would especially like to find this Johannes ELIASON and his wife, if he did marry, and to identify any descendents. Thanks very much, Liz J
