Hello All, I have been reading the Peterson information with interest. I am researching my Peterson ancestors who descended from Tobias Peterson born in DE in 1784 and came to Cecil Co, MD about 1812. I have not been able to connect to the line of Peter Petersonsmith, the Cecil Co Peterson's or the lower DE Petersons. Would anyone researching the Peterson line like to share information with me? I am at the infamous "brick wall". Closest I can see now is that Hans PETERSON to me would be something like a 3rd cousin 9 times removed. But I haven't tracked these people very far yet. I do not know who was Peter PETERSON senior's wife, Catherina. Does anyone have that? Some of the Hans PETERSON in-laws lived at Head of Elk or along Sassafrass River. I haven't found a marriage of one of the Brandywine PETERSONs to one of the Middletown PETERSONs yet. Hans PETERSON was said to be from Holstein (at the time part of Denmark), born about 1631, and had arrived on the Delaware as a soldier, working for the Dutch. He married two Swedish or Finnish wives. His second wife was Magdalena, a daughter of Pauel Jonsson "Mullica." Hans PETERSON and wife Magdalena inherited a half share of Pauel Jonsson Mullica's estate at "Wilde Hoek" also known as Wild or Indian Point. The other half of the Wild Point land was inherited by Pauel Jonsson's wife, Margareta (Andersdotter) PETERSON, who sold her share to Paul Mansson (her grandson) in September 1674 --who sold it on the same day back to Hans PETERSON (his uncle). Hans PETERSON also owned lands at Shellpot ( Skilpot) creek, including a mill or part of a mill. He and Magdalena Pauelsdotter had three sons: Peter (senior), Paul, and Israel PETERSON. There should also be a Carl PETERSON, son of Hans' first wife. If Peter PETERSON, jr is now (1725) selling land, somewhere previous there should be deeds from Israel PETERSON and from Paul PETERSON to their brother Peter junior, for his share. I tried to figure out if there was a special reason why these parcels of land were sold to Henry STEDHAM. The closest relationship I can find --and i am not sure I have all of the STEDHAMs listed here --is this: Hendrick STEDHAM, son of Adam, is a first cousin of Margaret Lyloffse STEDHAM, dau of Lulof STEDHAM. Margaret Lyloffse STEDHAM was married to Israel PETERSON --a grandson of Hans PETERSON. So, Peter PETERSON jr is selling land to his brother's wife's cousin. It would be interesting to see how the portion of the land that had once been Cornelius EMPSON's had come to Hans or Peter PETERSON. I don't think I have all the EMPSON relationships yet... Cornelius EMPOSN's daughter Sarah Empson was supposedly one of the four wives of Edward Robinson. His first wife had been Anna Walraven, who died about 1712. Anna WALRAVEN's father was Walraven Jansen "de Vos", a former soldier for the Dutch West Indies Company. His widow, Christina Ollesdotter, had married (2) to Margaret Lyloffse STEDHAM's grandfather, Timen STEDHAM, a doctor-surgeon for the New Sweden colony who died about 1686. If these's another connection between Hans PETERSON and Hendrich STEDHAM, I would be interested to know it. And I am also interested in descendents of Cornelius EMPSON. His son Ebenezer Empson married Susannah Wood, a daughter of Joseph Wood and Francina (Augustine) Herman. Thanks again for these land deed transcriptions. I find them fascinating as well as useful. Thanks very much, Marie, for sharing your GRACE family data. I too have run into GRACE lines being from NJ but have not been able to connect them with families in Maryland. I suspect there probably is a connection if we could go back further, but I am not aware of what link there is, if any, right now. I'll keep your records in my GRACE folder and be on the lookout for them in the future. Many thanks once again for typing out census record details. I would be very pleased if you could look up Mathias or any Van Bebbers in it. Whatever you feel like doing would help me tremendously. I don't know if this one would be in the Cecil County book, but would like this one especially --the earlier deal here had been made in (I think) 1700 --which would have been the 11th year of King William's reign in England: Land deeded to Mathias VB by Heletie (Peterson) Anderson, his wife's aunt: "Deed. On 14 June 1708. Isaac Vigoreu of Appoquinimink Creek, yeoman, & Heleitie his wife to Mathias van Bebber of Cecil County in the province of Maryland, merchant, and Hermintie his wife, daughter of Adam Peterson, late of Appoquinimink Creek, gentleman, dec, & Adam Peterson the younger of Appoquinimink Creek, son of Adam Peterson, dec. Whereas by one deed dated 19 Feb 11th year of King William III England, Hillitie by her then name Hillitie Anderson of Appoquinimink Creek, widow..." --need remainder of quote; need location of land. There should be land purchases 1702, 1704, 1708 (Isaac Van Bebber), 1711, 1714 and 1716. I think there would be also a James aka Jacob, who is Mathias' nephew, in a land deal around 1713 or so. What specific piece (location) he received would be very good to know. Whenever the same Jacob aka James Van Bebber sold any lands would also be significant. Mathias van Bebber is my 8- great-grandfather. I could post trees of these families if anyone is interested. Petersons mostly lived on the Delaware side of the state line nearer to Middletown DE, since the 1670's. Many Van Bebbers over there too since about 1700. More observations around Cornelius ELIASON. Cornelius ELIASON (1679-1754) had leased land from Ephraim Augustine HERMAN. He transferred that lease to his two sons in 1750, not long before he died. He was about 70 in that year. Assignment of Lease. Written on the back of a lease from Ephraim Augustine Herman to Cornelius Eliason recorded in Lib. S.K. No. 5, folios 97-99, Cornelius Eliason assigns the lease to his sons Elias Eliason and Cornelius Eliason. Made & Ackn: 5 Apr 1750 . Wit & JPs: P. Bayard, Nich'o Hyland Rec: 5 Apr 1750 M. Bordley, Clerk [the above had been taken from ABSTRACTS OF CECIL CO. MD LAND RECORDS 1734-1753] It might be useful to see a transcription of that lease betwen Ephraim Augustine HERMAN and Cornelius ELIASON --is that available anywhere?? Other observations: Casparus Augustine HERMAN (1655-1697 ), the father of Ephraim Augustine HERMAN, had for his second wife, Anna REYNIERS, who is the mother of Ephraim Augustine HERMAN and two of Ephraim's siblings. The marriage of Casparus Augustine HERMAN and Anna REYNIERS took place on 23 August 1682 in the Dutch Reform Church of New York --same church in which Cornelius ELIASON was baptized (in 1679). "1682 23 Aug; Casparus Hermanszen, wid Susanna Huyberts; Anna Reyniers, jd van N. Yorke, de Eerste woonende aan de Zuytrivier, en tweede alhier" This is interesting if only because, in the index to Probate Records in Maryland state archives, Cornelius ELIASON's wife, Margaret Reyonlds ELIASON, is also called Margaret REYNALDS. Later, in 1761, a Catherine WOOD, daughter of Catherine Julian and Joseph WOOD, married a Thomas REYNOLDS (b ca 1710. Joseph WOOD was a son of Robert WOOD, of Bohemia Manor, and Robert's father, Joseph WOOD, married Francina HERMAN, one of the sisters of the Casparus Augustine HERMAN who married (2) Anna REYNIERS. It gets worse, or better: Cornelius ELIASON's daughter, Rebecca ELIASON, was married on 15 December 1737, 15 Dec 1737, St. Stephens Parish, Cecil Co MD, to a John WOOD. I could use some help with this family, because I also have a Jacob WOOD who married Catalina PETERSON of Middletown Delaware, probably between 1755 and 1765. She belongs to the Adam PETERSON family, who also had large landholdings in the area, close to the DE/MD state line Please help. The ELIASONs of Cecil County and of Delaware have been confusing researchers for a long time, and the WOOD family who is intermarried with the HERMANS family is underresearched. I'm looking for the family of Margaret REYNOLDS (or REYNALDS) now, and will post whatever I discover. Thanks, Liz J * Casparus Augustine HERMAN married (1) Susannah Huyberts (+/1682), (2), Anna Reyniers, and (3), 31 August 1696, Katherine Williams.
There is a Margaret Reynolds ELIASON whose name appears in MSA caard Indexes to Colonial Probate Records, a few times between 1750 and 1757; location listed as Cecil County, not specified where. Her name also on these cards as Margaret REYNALDS. I think this must be the wife of Cornelius ELIASON, senior, of Middle Neck Hundred. In his will, her name is Margaret. His estate was finally distributed (say the index cards) in 1757; he had died in 1754; will indexed as Cornelius ELISON Sr. Margaret was made his exec on 14 Jan. 1754, after son Elias declined. Can anyone confirm that Margaret REYNOLDS or REYNALDS was the name of Cornelius ELIASON's wife? Since they had been married in 1703 (North Sassafrass / St Stephen's church records), she would probably have been born not later than 1685. She was 67 in 1752. Who were her parents and family? Thanks very much, Liz J

Alan, I see you research the Gilpin family. I have been looking for the parents of Francis Green Gilpin, he was in Baltimore Co. in 1766 and Washington Co in 1776. Next I find him in Bedford Co VA. in 1789. I would like to exchange information on the Gilpin family. Larry or Debbie Gilpin gilpin@qx.net

It's pretty interesting reading so if anyone would like to see it I have scanned the first half and placed it on my web site. I hope to get the second half done soon. Elizabeth PEIRCE was bapt. 27 Nov 1713 at St Paul's PE Church in Chester, PA; the daughter of Henry PEIRCE of Concord and Sarah SMITH. Elizabeth PEIRCE and John HALL most likely md: after June 1726 as Henry NAYLE's will written that month bequeathed £5 lbs to "Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Peirce." Henry PEIRCE outlived his wife Sarah SMITH who must have d: after 1720 and prior to 1733. Henry PIERCE's will written 25th day of March 1743 makes the following references to John HALL: ... Thanks, Liz. The Francis SMITH in Cecil cnty (Knowlewood) was Francis[2] SMITH, wife unknown, died w/o issue. Robert EYRE was Robert[2] EYRE, of New Castle, DE, wife Elizabeth, unk. Was supposed to inherit from Francis[2] SMITH Richard HOE/HOWE/HOW, John HALL & Richard REYNOLDS all md: dtrs of Henry & Sarah (Smith) PIERCE & ended up w/some portions of Knowlewood. I know nothing further about them. Sarah (Smith) PIERCE was sister to Francis[2] SMITH, md: to Henry PEIRCE of Chester (now Delaware) cnty, PA & apparently inherited bulk of Francis[2] SMITH's estate & passed it on to the 3 dtrs tho no will can be found for her & were not passed down thru Henry PEIRCE's will or estate. It appears that most likely none of these people actually ended up residing in Cecil cnty on Knowlewood, except perhaps the 3 dtrs & their husbands. [Except, of course, Francis[2] SMITH who owned Knowlewood.] I don't know of sibling relationships of Samuel KIRK but he d: w/o issue.
