Oh, lawdy, Liz J, these old Chester/Delaware cnty, PA surnames! Mine for the most part BELONG in Delaware (earlier Chester) cnty, PA rather than Cecil cnty, MD. There's gonna be some confusing conflicts w/the PEARCE/PEIRCE/PIERCE families in Cecil cnty and Delaware cnty AND New Castle cnty. I have a Henry PEIRCE, wife Sarah SMITH, of Kennett, then Concord, in PA; his wife inherited land from her brother in Cecil cnty, MD. No relationship to the PEIRCE (all spellings) family in Cecil cnty from which eventually sprang Henry Ward PEIRCE who we find in all 3 counties (same man). Nor is "my" Henry PEIRCE related to the George PEIRCE family of Concord. I have primary documentation to prove that. My LARKINs are also mainly of Chester/Delaware cnty, PA. Keep in mind, PRICE was mostly likely Welsh and at one time AP RHYS (ap Rhys) and PRICE, RICE and REESE could all be related families in the very early days, the 1600s in this area of PA, MD, DE. *sigh* One more thing and then I would say most of my further comments should be moved to the PA-OLD-CHESTER, PACHESTE, PADELAWA lists rather than taking up MDCECIL list space. That last thing is your access to EARLY western NJ records. Like 1670s to 1710. EYRE is pronounced AIR so you can imagine the possible spellings, including EAYER, etc. as well as the more common AYER, etc. My original immigrant ancestor, Robert EYRE (grndfthr of the Robert EYRE who md: Ann PRICE) settled in Bethel twp, now in Delaware cnty, PA c1682. Several history books refer to his having settled first in NJ. I suspect he did NOT, but has been considered a relative of a George EYRE who settled in the Burlington, NJ area and was the progenitor of the well-known shipbuilding "Kensington" EYREs. This George EYRE didn't arrive in the Burlington, NJ area until 1727 or so, some close to or more than 20 years after the death of "my" Robert EYRE. Anyway, if you have access to those early will, land, etc. records: 1670-1710 or so, and could keep an eye out for EYRE of any spelling it would be appreciated. My apologies to the majority of the members of this MDCECIL list for dragging in so many relatives, etc. from early PA and DE.

I am so totally not up on them. I very much appreciate the exchange of posts here. I think it's the only way. > By the way, I have Ann ALRICHS as md: to Alexander PORTER rather than to > Samuel PORTER Okay, I'll flag that one & see what I can find. It's probably one of my famous typos or something. Hope this doesn't make more confusion but maybe this below, connection to NJ, then back again to Delaware, will be at least of passing interest. I have a James PRICE family of Monmouth County NJ. have often wondered if there is any connection to the NCC and Chester PRICE family. Info from these came from the old PEARCE-PRICE bible which had been handed down to a lady in NJ. Info in the bible was written up by by Edward J. Raser, in an article in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Vol. XXVIII, Numbers 3/4, July/October 1953 (Pub. Genealogical Society of New Jersey), Pp. 54, 55, 56. David Tourison of the NJ-List recently compiiled a big set of info about this family because of my connection to the ELLISON family of Monmoth County NJ and also (my branch) of ELLISONs are in Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Several surnames in this bible seem to occur both in Monmouth County NJ and in NCC Delaware: CLAYTON, CURTIS, LARKIN, PEARCE PRICE. Some of these families also appear in early land records of NJ --persons buying land along the Delaware River. What was interesting to begin with in the family was James PRICE of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, NJ, the progenitor of the family whose bible it was, was a mariner. He was born 1718. There are connections to Egg Harbor (south of Monmouth County NJ), and probably connections to residents of NJ (such as CURTIS) living in places along the Delaware. James PRICE married Elizabeth Brinley and had: 1. Elizabeth PRICE 1744-1774 md. Lewis ELLISON (4 ch) 2. Thomas PRICE 1746-1836 3. James PRICE 1748 4. Mary PRICE 1750 5. Lewis PRICE 1752 James PRICE died sometime after 1749. His father was Joseph PRICE, married to a "Phoebe." I don't know anything more about these, but have always wondered if James had siblings, and where they had settled. Deed, 7 August 1749. James Price of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, NJ, mariner, wife Elizabeth and mother Phebe Brinley sell land in Shrewsbury, near a place called the Red Bank, to John Redford. The land was bequeathed to him by his father Joseph Price. (East Jersey Deeds Bk A-3, p 351). I don't know what became of this family of PRICEs except for Elizabeth. Her husband, Lewis ELLISON married (2) Lydia CURTIS and had several more ch. Lewis Jr ELLISON, youngest son of Lewis ELLISON 1 and Elizabeth CURTIS, married mary LARKIn, and thy ended up in Pencader Hundred, NCC Delaware, between 1811 and 1830 when I find him on th census. If this is of interest, I can send along a goodly amount of info which had been recently complied by David Tourison. Most of my info pertains to the ELLISON family of Monmouth Co. NJ, then Pencader Hundderd, NCC Delaware. Thank you again for the PRICE info. maybe we can find some connection. Liz J On 11/21/06, Judy Ardine <downeast@concentric.net> wrote: > Whew, Liz! Gail, If you want the abstracts you can order them from Heritage Books, www.heritagebooks.com . Abstracts of Cecil County, Maryland Land Records, 1734-1753 $23.50 Abstracts of Cecil County, Maryland Land Records, 1673-1751 $26.50 If you want actual copies of land records I believe you will have to get them through the Maryland State Archives, http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/ The last time I tried that it took forever. Whew, Liz! Thank you. Actually, I'm not totally convinced yet that Elizabeth ALRICHS is a direct ancestor. I'm sure we have the correct John PRICE, I'm just not sure which wife of John PRICE's I'm descended from! That is why I've done little w/the ALRICHS'. By the way, I have Ann ALRICHS as md: to Alexander PORTER rather than to Samuel PORTER but I can't cite the source for you. I suspect my source "might" have been Anne Wiegle, who is an excellent researcher. And, yes, I agree, Elizabeth ALRICHS md: 1st Peter STALCOP and 2nd John PRICE. I have dates of c1746 for her m: to Peter STALCOP and aft: Dec 1747 for her m: to John PRICE. But neither is primary documentation. Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania, Volumes I-III Price Family Elizabeth Alricks, daughter of Peter and Dorcas (Land) Alricks, married (first) John Stalcop, and (second) John Price, of Lower Chichester township, Chester county, , Pennsylvania, a miller and farmer and large landowner, who died in 1773, leaving six children: Ann, wife of Robert Eyre; Samuel, of whom presently; Hannah, Sarah, John, and Elizabeth. His wife Elizabeth survived him. ----------------------------------------- PRICE, ELISABETH, widow of John PRICE, Springfield, late of Chichester. May 2, 1791 - Not Probated. Early Pennsylvania Land Record, 1976, William Henry Egle, Editor; Genealogical Publishing Co, Baltimore.; Colonial & Revolutionary Families, Vol III, p. 1359. Townsend "Samuel PRICE, father of John Richards PRICE, and maternal great-grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was a son of John and Mary (ALRICKS) PRICE, and was born in Lower Chichester twp, Chester, no Delaware, cnty, August 30, 1750. ... " One assumes from the order of mention of the children in the above will that Ann PRICE was the first born of John PRICE's children and Samuel PRICE his second born, that Samuel & therefore Ann PRICE, were more than 21 years of age in 1770 when the will was written and therefore born "prior" to 1749. One would also assume that Hannah was also 21 or more years of age and unmarried in 1770 and that Sarah PRICE had not yet attained 21 years of age in 1770. John[2] PRICE would have been less than 21 years of age in 1770 and Elizabeth being the youngest would than also have to have been less than 21. Since John[2] PRICE was an Executor of the will one also assumes that he was in all likelihood 21 years of age in 1773 giving him a birthdate sometime between 1748 & 1752. Either Sarah and John[2] PRICE were twins or John[2] was born between 1749 & 1752. The John PRICE of the will above was said to be a shipwright from Delaware who arrived in Pennsylvania prior to 1742. Which makes the following marriage from the church records of Old Swedes Church in Wilmington, DE quite intriguing. Is the John PRICE of this marriage record the John PRICE of the above will who d: in 1773? Is Elizabeth (nee Wollows) PRICE (Wollows could be Wallace) of this marriage record the mother of "my" Ann PRICE who md: "my" Robert EYRE? IsHannah BUCKLEY one of John PRICE's wives and mother of "my" Ann PRICE? Or is Elizabeth (nee Alricks) the mother of "my" Ann PRICE who md: "my" Robert EYRE??
> Would the little thingys be your fingers!!!!! LOL Gordon. Well, the prog onboard here makes these weird plus signs in the trees it generates, which I think are non-helpful because they are non-directional. So every time I make a tree, I use my little fingers to replace the plus signs with these little // thingys \\ That's how I know who's who. But if the teen child is in here, wanting the plastic card thingy to go shopping for some new thingy, my brain sometimes loses track of \\ these thingys //, causing my fingers to put some in backwards. I have trouble with left and right too. LOL Liz
I am looking for anyone who might be able to help me identify James Hyland from Maryland. This James Hyland can be found in 1788 in Kent County, MD and then in 1790, 1800, 1810 & 1820 Kent County census records. It is noted that he lived in Kent County in the district which lies close to the Cecil County line. This James Hyland was a blacksmith and it is determined from census records that he was born in the 1750's. From census records his wife was born bet. 1760-1770. In his will written 10 Nov 1823 and proven 18 Sep 1832 in Kent County he lists the following children: son, James Hyland (abt. 1793- 1824) who pre-deceased his father in 1824 and was married to Rhoda ? (1795-1838) son, Henry Miles Hyland (1796-1851) m. Mary Maria Grant (1799-1847) (both buried in Old St. Paul's Cem. Kent Co., MD daughter, Ann Hyland married to Richard Hurtt (1775-1838) daughter, Kesiah (Keziah) Hyland married to Mr. Love I have been able to identify another daughter not listed in his will and her name was Isabella Hyland (1776-1838) m. Capt. Henry Yearly (Yearley) (abt. 1769-1827) I feel certain that this Hyland family must be connected to the John and Nicholas Hyland family of Cecil County. From my research of the Cecil County Hyland family I find that John Hyland b. 11/27/1746 in Cecil County was the s/o John Hyland (1716-1756) and his wife Martha Tilden. John Hyland b. 1746 d. bef. 23 Oct 1815 in Chestertown, Kent County. Will Book #9 folio 319. ( John Hyland of Kent County) To be buried at the discretion of my wife, Ann Elizabeth Hyland. My debts paid out of my estate by my wife Ann Elizabeth Hyland. To my dau. Rebecca Ferguson a negro girl Mary that is now living with her. All the rest of my estate to my wife, Ann Elizabeth Hyland in consideration of her raising the children. Exec. my wife Ann Elizabeth Hyland. Wit: William Pearce, Thomas Davis, Mary Pearce. Written Jan 13, 1815 proved Oct 23, 1815. I also have a note that John Hyland and his wife Anne Elizabeth Worrell had a son, William Hyland b. in the 1790's in Chestertown and died in Moultrie Co., Ill on 25 July 1860. It is my belief that the above John Hyland (1746-1815) married 1st in 1778 to Martha Tilden d/o Charles & Jane Tilden of Kent County. Martha Hyland mentioned in her father's will as being deceased before 1787. This 1st wife having the same name as Martha Tilden d/o Marmaduke Tilden and his wife Rebecca Wilmer who married John Hyland (1716-1756) of Harmony Hall and parents of John Hyland (1746-1815). The 2nd wife of John Hyland (1746-1815) was Ann Elizabeth Worrell. Reverting back to John Hyland (1716-1756) and his wife Martha Tilden (d. 1766) d/o Marmaduke Tilden & Rebecca Wilmer. They were married 2 Apr 1739 St. Mary's Ann Parish, Cecil County, MD. I show that they had the following children: Rebecca Hyland married to John Kankey Nicholas Hyland b. 1742 (Nothing other than birth date) Stephen Hyland b. 1744 m. Rebecca Tilden d/o Charles & Jane Tilden John Hyland b. 1746-1815 m1st. Martha Tilden d/o Charles & Jane Tilden m2nd Ann Elizabeth Worrell Charles Hyland b. 1749 (Nothing other than birth date.) Lambert Hyland b. 1751m. 1st Elizabeth Rigby, 2nd Elizabeth Gale & 3rd Sarah Miles (This Lambert re-located from Cecil Co. to Somerset Co. bef the Rev. War) Millicent Hyland b. 1754 m. Capt. John Ford Nothing seems to be known abt. son, Nicholas b. 1742 or son Charles b. 1749. Since Charles was b. 1749, I am wondering could he have been James Charles or Charles James Hyland, and later removed to Kent County and just went by James Hyland???????????? I am still trying to place a Stephen Hyland (1800-1850) with his parents. This Stephen Hyland in his obit in Balto Sun. states Cecil & Kent Counties please copy. This Stephen Hyland married to Hester Wright. Their Children: Ann E. Hyland m. Charles A. Hush 1843 Stephen W. Hyland d. 1839 Sarah Hyland d. 1838 Look forward to hearing from Hyland Researchers. Thank you, Sharon

Hi Judy. Thank you again for the very fine records you sent earlier. And for the great contributions all along. Much of what I have been able to accomplish in the last year or so is because of your efforts in getting this info out there, your efforts and the contributions of some other very kind people here. Let me say Thanks to everyone here and now!! > Liz J, do you have any info on a Peter ALRICHS b: c1695, d: c1760, md: > Dorcas LAND c1720 Emmanuel Episcopal Church, New Castle cnty, DE? I I believe this Peter ALRICHS was first married on 27 November 1715, Philadelphia PA, to Elizabeth APPLETON. She is said to have d. ca 1720 [[death date guess-timate!!]] I have not done any work yet on the APPLETONs. Penna Archives are partly down lately, so I cannot check this marriage record. Need to check the early churches of Philadelphia & vicinity. Here is a tree. I put the children of the Peter ALRICHS and Dorcas LAND that you had wanted all in a group here with the tree around them. See my earlier comments about the early ALRICHS in Netherlands; I can send more if needed. /-- Sigfridus ALRICHS /-- Peter ALRICHS ca 1632-1697 | \-- Annetjen SMAALTIUS (sounds Frisian) /-- Jacobus ALRICHS 1671-/1705 | /-- Maria WESSELS b. a 1632 /-- Peter ALRICHS b. ca 1695 | | \-- John fFORAT +1696 | \-- Hester fFORAT | /-- John fFORAT's unknown first wife +bef 1691 Samuel ALRICHS ca 1727-1764 --md. And additions/corrections always very welcome!! NOTES: Jacobus ALRICHS was bapt in Dutch Reform Church, New York (city): baptism: 1671 Sep 10; Pieter Aldrichs, Maria Wessels; Jacobus; Allard Anthony, Francois Rombout, Anna Elisabeth Wessels - death: before 3 November 1705: Estate Admin to brother Sigfridus Alrichs of New Castle. Peter ALRICHS (father of Jacob, md Maria WESSELS): marriage was 9 February 1664, in Dutch Church of New Amsterdam (New York city) --this was only a few months before the English took over New-Netherlands --at which time New Amsterdam became New York. "1664 09 Feb; Pieter Aldricks, jm van Nykerck in Groeningerlandt; Maria Wessels, jd van Uytrecht" --I think this is the marriage date and not date of Banns. Nykerck in Groningen was the place where his father (Sigfridus) was a minister. Groningen is in the northern part of the Netherlands, the province next to Friesland, between there and Schleswig-Holsten. Peter ALRICHS land in Delaware: A "patent was granted to Peter Alrichs, February 15, 1668, for two islands in the Delaware River, the largest of which was called Matineconek, the Indian of which was Koomenakanokouck. Near the smaller island was a small creek "fitt to build a mill thereupon." There was granted "the said island and premises appertaining, as also the small creek aforementioned neare unto the lesser island, running up a mile within land to have liberty to erect and build a mill thereupon, 57 3/4 where shall be found most convenient, as also a convenient proportion of land on each syde of the said Creek for Egresse and Regresse to and from the Mill, and for other necessary accommodations thereunto belonging." --from Scharf, Thomas J., History of Delaware, 1609-1888, Volume Two, Chapter XLV, "Brandywine Hundred" I know there were other land grants and sales, etc. See Duke of York Record for more. Peter ALRICHS had a lot of different roles over the years and through several changes of government. His activities in the Delaware area are well-documented and available. I think the earliest generation of Alrichs used the Crane Hook Church. I am working on the family/parents of Maria WESSELS, and will get back here with whatever I find. More records of theirs will be found in New Amsterdam/NY Dutch Church. try archives of Dutch-Colonies-List for a head start. Judy, I think your John PRICE connection is the marriage of Elizabeth, d/o of Peter ALRICHS and Dorcas LAND --is that right?? Do you have an earlier marriage for this Elizabeth ALRICHS?? I have an earlier marriage listed for her: first married to John STALCOP?? Had a son Peter?? NOTE: I do not have this John STALCOP places in any family --need parents for him. Also, did they have a daughter who married Dr. Thompson DAVID?? If you have her name and info on him, it would be helpful. (sometime) I hope this helps --if there is something else you would like, please let me know. Anyone, just ask. As always, if anyone has additions or corrections, please do! And thank you again for all ther help and for the interest. Thanks all! Thanks for the information on Alexanders - would you please look up Wilcox; Harden; Heald; & Ratcliff? Many thanks, Colleen
Many posts recently have contained names of much interest to me. I haven't found an exact match but I keep hoping. Merritt is another of my mystery names. The 1850 Maryland Census for Cecil Co. shows my Catherine Alexander, age 3, living with Abel Merritt age 26 and Mary Merritt age 56, John Merritt age 17. In 1860 Catherine Alexander age 14 was living in Kent Co., Maryland, [First election district--Chesterton Post Office]. She was living with the family of Abel J. Merritt age 38 and his wife Martha age 37 and Marietta age 1. Also living with them was John W. and Charles L. Moffett ages 13 and 11 respectively. [1840 census has a Spencer Merritt who on a later census has a wife, Mary, living next to a James Moffett in Kent Co., Maryland. Maryland Marriages 1655-1850 shows Spencer Merritt married Mary Riley on 10 Mar 1824 in Kent Co., Maryland]. I was speculating that Spencer's wife might be the Mary Merritt age 56 in 1850. There were two Abel Merritts in Warwick in the 1880s, but I haven't proved either of them are the same Abel Merritt mentioned above. In 1870, Abel J. Merritt age 47 and wife Martha age 47 [he says he was born in Delaware and she in Maryland] with children Marietta age 11, George H. age 9, Martha H. age 7 and Polly Janis Merritt age 5 all children born in Maryland, were living in Galena, Kent Co., Delaware. If anyone has connections to this Merritt branch, I would like to know more about them. Alan: Thanks from another Alexander searcher. I'm on the trail of Robert who married a Catherine. I have no dates but they had a daughter, Catherine b. 1845. The little Catherine was living with the family of Abel Merritt on the 1850 census in Cecil Co. I appreciate the list you provided.
