    3. Aha, thanks very much! This helps! I will put this together with what I can get from NJ land deeds & wills, and from wills of Philla, and see what I can make of it. If you want a detailed descendency sheet when I get done (whatever "done" is, say when I come to a stopping point), I would be happy to send it your way. Maybe I will find the possible STEELMAN connection along the way. Also working on them lately Thanks again! You always have interesting comments! 3. I could use some help with the six (?) children of Hans JUSTIS, if anyone has them handy. Hans JUSTIS married Maria RAWSON, of Marcus Hook PA, daughter of Olle and Brita RAWSON. Also could use some help with wife and any other siblings of Brita, daughter of Mans ANDERSSON, Hans JUSTIS' mother and grandfather. Mans ANDERSSON moved to Maryland in 1661. Whatever is convenient, & Thanks very much, Liz J

    1. Re: [MDCECIL] Hans Gustafsson/Justus/Justice
    2. E Johnson
    3. Beginnings of the JUSTIS, JUSTUS, JUSTICE family. I wrote this except where quotes appear. --ej. Hans JUSTIS was the 4th child of Johan GUSTAFSSON, an original Swedish immigrant. Johan GUSTAFSSON, from Kinnekulle, Skaraborg County, Sweden, came to New Sweden as a soldier in 1643, the year of the fourth expedition to New Sweden, in which the "Fama" and the "Swan" --and the Swedish Governor, Johan Prinz, arrived in the Delaware. He was first stationed on the New Jersey side of the Delaware, near the present town of Salem, N.J., at Fort Elfsborg. Later Governor Rising promoted him to Gunner, and transferred him to Fort Trinity, where New Castle Delaware now is. Johan Gustafsson married Brita MANSDOTTER there, about 1654. Brita's father was Mans ANDERSSON, who had lived first at Swanwyck (above New Castle, DE), then moved to Christina (later Wilmington) c1657, then moved to Maryland in 1661. Johan Gustafsson, called John Eustace by Walter Wharton, an Englishman who made the 1671 census of all of the Delaware River settlements. On 16 May 1669, under the name of John EUSTAS, he received a confirmation of the patent for 150 acres of land. It was situated in the Aronameck neighborhood, where West Philadelphia is now, on the west bank of the Schuylkill River. Hans Mansson was his neighbor on the northeast, John Bowles and the woods were to his northwest, and John Kinsey was on the southwest. It was bounded on the southeast by the Schuylkil. Johan Gustafsson and Brita Mansdotter had eleven children. See #4, Hans, who moved to Cecil County, Maryland. Also remember Brfita's father had moved to Maryland in 1661. 1. Justa Gustafsson (Justis) 1655-1722 Kingsessing (West Phila. PA) 2. Måns Gustafsson (Justis) 1658-1749 Northern Liberties (nr Phila. PA 3. Carl Gustafsson (Justis) ca 1660-1718 Kingsessing **4. Hans Gustafsson (Justis) ca 1662-ca 1712 Northeast, Cecil Co., MD 5. Anna Gustafs ca 1666-aft.1740 prob. New Castle Co., DE 6. Johan Gustafsson (Justis) ca 1668-1718 Philadelphia County, PA 7. Peter Gustafsson (Justis) 1670-1699 Kingsessing 8. Jacob Gustafsson (Justis) ca 1673-1699 Kingsessing 9. Elisabeth Gustafs ca 1675-1730 prob. New Castle Co., DE 10. Sven (Swan) Gustafsson (Justis) ca 1677-1723 Kingsessing 11. Anders (Andrew) Gustafsson (Justis) 1681-1740 Salem County, NJ. Hans JUSTIS married Maria RAWSON, of Marcus Hook, daughter of Olle and Brita RAWSON, about 1684. They lived at first at Naaman's Creek, then moved about 1700 to Northeast, Cecil County, Maryland. They had at least six children. One, Lydia, married Rev. Jonas Auren, about 1710. Hans JUSTIS' mother, Brita MANSDOTTER, widow of Johan Gustafsson, of the Aronameck District, was a charter member of Gloria dei Church at Wicaco, at its consecration in 1700. Several siblings of his were also: Giösta (Justa) Justis and his wife Anna Morton, Carl Justis, "bachelor" and Sven Justis and his wife Catharina Yocum were also charter members from Aronameck. John Justis, already a widower in 1700, and Måns Justis and wife Christina Swanson were members from Nitapkung/Mattsunk District, just upriver from Aronameck. Matthias Mårtensson and his wife Anna Justis were members from Calcon Hook. Hope this is useful, Liz J Selected sources: Dr. Peter Stebbins Craig's "1671 Census of the Delaware" (1999) --which I have, and in "The 1693 Census of the Swedes on the Delaware" by Dr Peter Stebbins Craig --which I don't have. For the land patent, see "Original Land Titles in Delaware Commonly Known as the Duke of York Record." Also see the article at the Swedish Colonial Society website, "Johan Gustafsson, Soldier from Kinnekulle." Checking some of the other articles there may yield clues to some of his descendents. Article about Gloria Dei in Swedish Colonial News, Volume 2, Number 1, Winter 2000. Also check postings in 2006 to the NJ-List from land transctions from NJ Archives, and check the NJ-List archives for abstracts from various NJ calendars of wills. Don't miss USgenweb archives, Philadelphia County --there are 18 wills abstracts for this surname there, and undoubtedly many other mentions of this fam in other PA wills. 3. This Jesse is from the Peter JUSTICE who was son of the original Johan Gustafsson?? Peter who d. c1699 at Aranomeck-Kingsessing?? I thought Peter JUSTICE Sr had only one son, was that Peter Jr? Which of this line got over to the NJ side again? I thought Anders (Andrew) JUSTICE, son of the original Johan, was the one who moved to NJ. Didn't know any of Peter's moved there, but of course you could even walk across the Delaware in certain cold winters. Interested in your line... & could use all the help I can get, thanks!
