I saw, briefly,a noted George Peterson researcher,Tom Luce,Saturday at the Bethel, Ohio Museum. Last I knew,Tom did not know George's parents. Peterson is not a common name on the Mullica River of SE NJ.Luce is on-line We talked of his seeing a post of mine on OhClinto@rootsweb.com that am,and of his Harpers. 20 + YEARS AGO,Dr Peter Stebbins Craig, told me New Sweden had 6 [?] Peterson families.I suppose New Netherland had more.
Dr Wm Eberle Thompson [1836-194?]practiced medicine here in Bethel ,Ohio past his 100 th birthday. He delivered my uncles. His father was Dr Wm Thompson,d 1840 Bethel,Ohio. I have his 1836-38 ledger. And the grandfather,Rev William Justice Thompson, also lived to be very aged. Born in [Cecil Co?] Md,he moved to NC,and on to Danville,Ky where he was Ky's 2nd local Methodist minister, about 1786. And finally,he moved,by 1810,to a neighborhood of Maryland Methodists,at Pt Isabel,Washington TWNSP,Clermont Co,SW Ohio where he raised several sons, and buried 3 wives. Walraven was 1 neighboring family.
Thank you Shirley. I still think the surname is garbled... maybe the original church record had been damaged or hard to read. Is FHL number 0006418 a set of films of the original pages --or is this a film of another transcription, does anyone know? I checked Craig's "1671 Census of the Delaware" --nothing even close. Could someone maybe check the index in his 1693 book? This is the information I have on Hans. 1693 CENSUS OF SWEDES ON THE DELAWARE, pg 129 (Brandywine hundred) was born in 1662, the fourth son of Johan & Brita Gustafsson of Kingsessing. By 1787 he had moved to Brandywine hundred, where in 1690 he was granted 300 acres with Israel Helm, Jr. On 25 March 1697, Hans Justice witnessed the will of Oliver Cope who lived on Naaman's Creek in Brandywine hundred. Two years later he and his wife Maria were assigned pews in Holy Trinity Church. In 1701 he was a resident of Marcus Hook, Chester County, but he soon moved to the head of the Northeast River in Cecil County, Maryland. He was living at that location on 16 Nov 1710 - when he was visited by pastors Bjork & Sandel on the occasion of his daughter Lydia's marriage to Rev. Jonas Auren. He died shortly thereafter; his son John Justis and Andrew Friend were administrator's of Lydia Auren's Cecil County estate in 1715. Hans and his wife Maria were also parents of William, Peter and Mans Gustafsson or Justis. Swedish Colonial News: Hans & Maria initially lived near Naaman's Creek, but they moved soon after 1700 to Cecil County, MD and resided at Northeast, Maryland, where Hans died c. 1712. I have the following children listed: Lydia Justus b. 1682 John b. 1685 William before 1690 Peter b. 1702 Mounce b. 1704 My line follows Mounce I do have information on Maria's father Olle Rawson if anyone is interested. Thanks for all the responses. Janet Justice Papke

Going from memory. Several of the Steelman men wed New Castle Co females.Capt Johan Hans wed a Stalcup,I think. [When I was a boy listening to my Cincinnati Reds on the radio, Virgil Stalcup was the Red's shortstop!]. Stalcup's lived on Christina near Charles Springer [I had a 7th grade teacher named Mrs Springer, whose dau,Tamsin, was in my class.] James LeTart is remembered as an important Indian trader with a creek named for him near Carlisle,Pa,and further west,a [?] mountian, and finally, near Racine,s Ohio, LeTart's Falls of the Ohio River. His mother,Madame LaTort,of sw Lancaster Co,Pa had siblings apprentaced sp? to Capt Johan Hans Steelman, and one of the LaTort boys stole from Steelman, and fled. Steelman sent his Indians after the LaTort youth, with instructions to catch him dead or alive, and they did the latter. Pa liscenced Indian traders. Capt Johan Hans 'lived" outside Pa,in Cecil Co, Md,but traded up the rivers into Pa,causing Wm.Penn to write him. Though Capt Johan Hans died aged andpoor in southern Adams Co,Pa,just east of Friend's Gap thru the 1st mountian range,in the disputed Mason-Dixon line area, 30 years earlier he had loaned [?] sums of money so that the Swedes could build Holy Trinity-Old Swedes,in Wilmington,Del.
Do you have names of the children of Johan Hansson Steelman, the trader of Cecil County? I haven't got that far yet, & could use the help. & names of spouses of children of his, if they married. I think the traders are among the most interesting because they often had such wide-ranging connections. Do you have James Hanson Steelman widowed and married again? Looks like his will (1734/5) gives the name of his wife as Katharine, although his first wife was Susannah Toy. Katherine was the mother of the youngest, Peter Steelman, who was under 21 in winter 1734/5. One of James' daughters, Mary, married a Blackman, but I don't have his first name, nor any children of theirs. Mary and ___ Blackman were married before August 1734, James Steelman wrote his will --he just calls her "Mary Blackman." Same with Susannah, she's "Susannah Kean." Which Keen? Eric was James Steelman's brother; died of smallpox in 1731. Looks like there was a suiit over Eric's property. How did Jesse Justis end up with Eric Steelman's Mantua Creek farm? Also, James and Eric Steelman's brother, Christiaen (b. 1670), he's the one who lived at or near Wilmington, member of Holy Trinity Church there. (Right??) Did he marry a Mary Peterson after his first wife, Mary Cann (d/o John), died?? I need dates for him, and where did he end up? And if he did marry (2) Mary Peterson, who were her parents?
