Mary~ Thanks for the suggestions. Checked the Civil War lists both Union and Confederate without luck. Tried many different spellings for all records searched. As an adult Margaret LIBENS practiced the Lutheran faith. I know she had a brother or 2 in the Civil War but again can't find any record. Participation was stated by word of mouth. If they were combatants on one side or the other, that would eliminate the Quaker religious affiliation I would think. The Ohio death records which we have only states Maryland and info the family already knew. It is the Maryland data and of course, John LIBENS German origins which elude us. Hi, I wouldn't assume she was Lutheran. There was a Quaker population, have you tried those records? Also, if he was in the War Between the States, I think, they gave citizenship to those soldiers. Has anyone else come across that happening? How about Margaret Keil Liben's death record? However, Ohio's date for recorded deaths is 1909 - but sometimes the county or church or newspaper has something. Have been unsuccessful trying to find any data on my great grandparents in either Baltimore or Cecil County. John LIBENS, German emigrant married Margaret KIEL/KEIL/KYLE, American born about 1860 in the Rising Sun area of MD. John LIBENS was Lutheran so I assume Margaret was. Of their 8 children, 3 were born in MD. One of which was my grandfather John Louis LIBENS (born Sept. 9, 1866). Albert Henry (born Oct. 3 1863) and Annie Adeline (born Jan. 28, 1869) in MD. The family followed the railroad expansion, settling in Crestline Ohio about 1870. The Ohio records are no problem. It is the MD records for marriage, birth, naturalization, census, etc., for either LIBENS or KIEL that cannot be found. I have made 2 trips to the MD archives at Annapolis without success. We assume John LIBENS emigrated from Prussia to Baltimore between 1850 - 1860. We have a birth date and year for Margaret KIEL (May 2, 1845) Margaret had 6 siblings born in MD before 1858 but again no records. All dates we have, have been handed down via family sources without confirmation. Would anybody have any other suggestions, since we could find nothing in census, birth/marriage/death records. All LIBENS in the USA can be directly traced back to this John LIBENS! Mary Ellen LIBENS Chambers Lakewood Ohio
It has been known that recordation of vital records in Baltimore City was required by law starting January 1, 1875, but unknown to a lot of people, there existed a system for keeping such records prior to that date.
