War Pension Petition of Richard CRISWELL in Brooke Co., VA. The county is now in West Virginia. note: The surname, CRISWELL, has also been switched around in the spelling. I have seen documents on the same CRISWELL with 2 or more spelling variations: CRISWELL, CRISSWELL, CRESWELL, CRESSWELL, CHRISWELL, CROSWELL Susanna GOSSAGE said the Richard CRISWELL was an uncle by marriage. She testified that her family remembered how Richard CRISWELL fought 2 tours in the American Rev.. Regarding "Uncle by marriage." This means that Richard CRISWELL's wife could have been a DAVIS or GOSSAGE. None of the CRISWELL researchers have a name for Richard's wife - not even a given name. The 2nd tour was a substitute from Richard's brother, Andrew (this could mean that Andrew was either Andrew CRISWELL or Andrew DAVIS or ANDREW GOSSAGE because people didn't always use the term "brother-in-law" back then. Andrew CRISWELL or DAVIS or GOSSAGE was ill & couldn't serve in the RW. He stayed behind to care for the family in what was then Baltimore Co., & is now Carroll Co., MD. After the Revolution, the Richard CRISWELL clan moved to the Virginia north-west panhandle that included these counties: Brooke, Ohio, Hancock, and later Marshall Co. after the southern part of Ohio Co. was formed into Marshall Co.. This is all West Virginia now. The following families followed Richard CRISWELL to the north-west VA panhandle - probably s pending some time in Pennsylvania on the way: GOSSAGE, HEADINGTON. Rev. Nicholas HEADINGTON, Baptist Minister who migrated with Richard CRISWELL from what is now Carroll Co., MD, testified on behalf of Richard CRISWELL at the Rev. War Pension Petition in Brooke Co., VA. Censuses from Nicholas GOSSAGE in Brooke Co., VA: 1810 Brooke Co. VA on to 1840 1850 Brooke Co., VA, age 68, born abt. 1782 MD, with wife, Susanna age 65, born abt. 1785 MD 1870 Violet, Fairfield Co., OH - Nicholas w/o Susanna living in the home of Rebecca CRONER. Someone e-mailed me & said that Nicholas GOSSAGE was known around the Brooke Co., VA area as "Yellow Nick." He thought that perhaps this meant bi-racial. Does anyone have an answer to what that term means? Looks like Thomas GOSSAGE came to Ohio before Nicholas GOSSAGE.
