Shirley, I show the parents of Elizabeth Baker to be Henry Baker, Sr., b. September 04, 1743, and Eve (Unknown), b. June 1747. I'd like to know who Henry's parents were. > I am trying to find the name of the parents of Elizabeth Baker. She was born > > in Oak Orchard, Maryland May 1776. I have the names of six of their children. One of them, William BAKER, b. July 12, 1780, married Magdalena (Margaret) GREENWOOD in Frederick Co., Mar 27, 1827. William's first wife was Catharine HULL, b. June 27, 1788. She was murdered by two of her slaves on August 23, 1820. What I would like to know is the name of the first husband of Magdalena (Margaret) GREENWOOD. I suspect, but cannot prove, that it is George KIEFFER who married Margaret Greenwald on November 18, 1803 in Frederick Co., according to Marriage Licenses of Frederick County (MD) 1778-1810. All suggestions appreciated. Truman Library, KC Chiefs and Royals, etc.) I'm not even sure where Independence, KS is, although I've heard of it. The Kansas City area falls between KS and MO (I live 1/2 mile from the state line, in KS), so I could see your confusion. I'm sure the family center would be happy to help you, although you have to go there to look up info- maybe there is one in the VA area. Have you also tried the Family Search website, sponsored by the LDS? Good luck, Patty

Anyway, the Walter Gilbert page is mostly in the Michigan area, I think. So tell me, did George, the father leave Maryland and go to Ohio? I know the thing to do back then was to "go West", but I visited Kincaid, KS, where Mary Gilbert Royse moved and died there- it's the size of a peanut. It was pretty sad- mostly old people, and just a bank and post office. I did get to go through the house where she and Henry and kids lived- I have an old, old photo, probably when they first moved in. I just think Maryland and the East Coast is so great, why would one leave, but that's what was done back then. We have a fairly decent genealogy section at the Mid-Continent Lib. in Indep. (right by the RLDS fam. hist. center)- will follow up on your info, see if I can't find something. If you want to e-mail me directly, feel free- however, if someone is followig the same name, they can see th! is info. Later, Patty

"A Genealogical Index of Miami Valley Pioneers, Ohio", pg 60 (Germantown Public Library): a George Gilbert from Frederick Co, Md had 5 sons: Adam (who married Catherine Diffenbaugh), James, George (who married Catherine Wampler, and then Mary [Brown] Wampler, a widow), David, and Isaac. "Centennial Portrait and Biographical Record of Dayton and Montgomery County" (page 1233-1234): Jeremiah Gilbert was father of some Montgomery County settlers; he had 23 children, including 14 (including an Isaac) by a second wife, ?Powell, who Jeremiah married 27 August 1793. The same book (at pages 1231-1233) states that: the original settler was Thomas Gilbert from England, settled in Md, married a German woman, and had 2 children, Jeremiah & Susan; Jeremiah received a farm from his father Thomas, m. 1779 Catherine Weaver (whose father was soldier in Revolution), later married ?Powell, and had 23 children, including George (mother was Catherine Weaver). The book implies that this George may be the father of the 5 sons mentioned in "A Genealogical Index", etc described above. However, the same book at page 1232 states that George had only 4 children: Adam, David, James, & Isaac (no George); it further states that Adam's son, Jesse, was "of remotely German ancestors, w! ho, on coming to America, made their home in the wilderness of Frederick county, Md, where many of the family name reached distinction." [Virtually verbatim information describes Adam Gilbert, father of the above Jesse, in Drury's History of Dayton, discussed below.] (For Adam, David & James Gilbert, see 1850 census above.) "History of City of Dayton", by Drury, vol 2, pg 755-757: Jesse Gilbert & Adam Gilbert discussed. Jesse Gilbert, s/o Adam & Catherine (Diffenbaugh) Gilbert, married Hannah (Swihart) Mullendore. I live in the K.C. area; in Independence there is the RLDS church- they have a Family History library- microfiche, cds, etc. I could try looking up the file #s I have obtained from the Website, and see if there is more information. For example, on Joshua, and on Mary, my gggm, David and Lurena are listed as the parents. Some contributor put David b. abt.1810, someone else had Nov. 22, 1798- which I was able to verify by noting on the 1850 census that he was 52 at that time. There is so much cross-ref., etc. to get the accurate info., which I'm sure you know! I want to get over to the RLDS lib. and try looking up these files, but between work, kids, etc. it's difficult. Now that there's a good lead, I'll try to make it over next wk. In the meantime will let you know if I find anything--Patty P.S.The few pictures I have of Mary Gilbert and her children, I've notice! d one common trait- they all have very light blue eyes. I don't know if you have any photographs, just thought I'd mention that.-P
