Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/CFB.2ACI/109.193 Message Board Post: Hi Jim, I'm looking for information on John Porter (1694-1776), immigrated to MD from England in 1715. I read in Ed Porter's book, Porters of Colonial Maryland, that John Porter had a farm near Carrollton. He also said his children were born in Carrollton and that he was also buried there. The birth and death dates attributed to him were taken from his tombstone, according to Ed Porter. By chance, have you ever found anything to confirm any of this? Also, Jim Ryan has found a reference to Porter's Post Office on an 1877 map, at the intersection of route 26 and hwy 97 (in District 5, the "Freedom District" of Carroll Co.). He has also found a reference to Porter's Tavern in what appears to him to be the same spot (ref: page 697 of Scharf's History of Western Maryland). If John Porter's burial site still exists, I would like to find it. And where is it in relation to the crossroads mention above? Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks. Ann

For Marriages, Births and possible deaths not available online, would be in the "MARYLAND GERMAN CHURCH RECORDS", Volume 9, "The Pipe Creek Church, Benjamin's, St. Benjamin's or Krider's Church", Reformed records 1766-1835, and Lutheran Records 1767-1837; Translated and edited by C.T. You can purchased this book from the Historical Society of Carroll County http://www.carr.org/hscc click on publications. Also at the HSCC, in the research library, there are photocopies of the St. Benjamin's/Krider's church records starting in 1766, in German, to English starting in 1850 to 1947. You could submit a research request and the procedures and charges for research is on their website. I would be happy to do a look up for you in the Volume 9 book. Please send me the surnames with dates of birth, if known. Carroll County was formed in Jan. 1837 out of Baltimore and Frederick Counties. So if you are looking for marriages before 1837, you will need to check into Frederick or Baltimore Counties. There is a Index to Carroll County Marriage Liscenses Applications, 1837-1899, indexed by Grooms and Brides, abstracted by Maria Gilligan for the Carroll County Genealogical Society, copyrighted and available from the CCGS. http//:www.carr.org/ccgs/ccgs.html

It is not near the library, which is at 50 East Main Street. It is a private cemetery and the president and trustees of the cemetery will not at this time, give permission for the Carroll County Genealogical Society to go in any copy the tombstones. But, George Billingslea, the president/trustee, of the cemetery, is working on publishing books on the history of the cemtery and publishing the burial lot books ledgers. He is hoping to have the first book done, that goes up to the 1930 records, done by this summer June/July 2002. George will not answer questions by phone, but he will by mail. It might be about a 3 to 4 week wait but he will answer you query with the location and a small map of the location area. Be sure to give George as much info on the person/persons you are looking for date of birth and year he/she had died etc. You should enclosed a self stamped/address envelope, I would send two stamps. Write to: Mr. George Billingslea 8810 Walters Blvd. Unit 3523 Baltimore, Maryland 21234 There is a newpaper abstract from the December 1889 Democratic Advocate of persons buried there up to that year. It is on Dorlinda Shepley's site at http://hometown.aol.com/DorindaMD/index.html

    3. I believe I remember that the Carroll County Genealogical Society was not going to include the Westminster Cemetery in its series of cemetery books because the Westminster Cemetery folks said they were planning their own publication. Does anyone know if this is the case? If so, is there an expected publication date? Vanessa [email protected] My genealogy page: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~vstern
