    3. Thanks! I did not realize that Mary Cratcher/Crutcher/Fletcher 's 1765 Will specified her daughter South (Sarah) as the wife of John Andrew. Now the question is should we use Cratcher, Crutcher, or Fletcher as the last name. Thanks, Frank ___________________________________________________ GO.com Mail Get Your Free, Private E-mail at http://mail.go.com

    3. Oops! Frank, Parker and others interested in the Andrew - Cratcher connection: I did not intend to mislead anyone about Mary Crucher's will. She named South Andrew in it; the belief that this is Sara Andrew, wife of John, is inferred by myself and some others based on the weight of curcumstantial evidence, most of which is included in the end-notes included with my article. But I did not take the time yesterday to make this as clear as I should. I'll try to do a better job of extracting and citing in a future posting. Any and all input welcomed. Thanks. 3. I'll side with you on the inferences of circumstancial evidence. We are not talking about a time or place where there was so numerous a population that a host of confusion could arise. Even today on the Eastern Shore you'd be hard pressed to find a host of individuals form comingling families who would bear such striking similarities in names and in such close proximity to one another. Furthermore, remeber that the villages and towns were tiny compared in today's terms and property sizes were much greater because more of those earlier folks actuall had to survive and hopefully prosper on the weight of their holdings in real estate and the food produced upon it. That is to say population size and density I don't believe was overwhelming, rather only sustainable. Later migrations were based I also believe on circumstances other than sustainance, which is not the debate here. Bob Ireland ----- Original Message ----- From: "E. J. 3. Mary's maiden name was FLETCHER and she married a CRATCHER, she had a brother, Batterton FLETCHER, and was the daughter of William FLETCHER and Elizabeth SELVEY. Elizabeth's father was Tobias SELVEY. Often after a woman marries she first rids herself of her most disliked or middle name replacing it with her maiden. Ever after she is known by her married (husband's) surname. This still happens often enough today, but on legal documents once a community assumes you married you are until the end more considered the husband's wife and therefore carry his name on all transactions. This should not be a hard to follow concept in light of the fact it still goes nearly without question today. Not to pontificate, but I know ladies today who after receiving a divorce are so intricately identified with their former husbands that the nightmare of clearing legal accounts, both joint and singular, can be overwhelming and financially burdensome ...usually them, not the men. In fact, often in a marriage many institutions make it difficult for the lady of the house to be head on any binding agreement. For example, if you are married, look to see who's name is always first on any joint accounts, home lien, mortgage, telephone bill and get a taste of what inequity your lady will suffer if ever she were disillusioned with the union and wanted to dissolve it. Don't even speak of credit. I'm sure many of the female membership of this list can vouche for this. I can't tellyou how often I would be at a restaurant or check-out counter and although "she" pays, "I" get the receipt or the change handed to me, a few times even "THEIR" credit card! ...and to make it worse, the woman are just as guilty as the men on this one!!
