Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Md/BaltimoreCity/13374 Surname: Loewenstein ------------------------- MARYLAND, BALTIMORE CITY "First German Cemetery (on June 20, 1894). Opinions differ on the identity and location of this cemetery. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He is my great-grandfather." I have a copy of a book called, "The Very Quiet Baltimoreans" which may be of help to you. It is by Jane Bromley Wilson, 1991, from the White Mane Publishing Company, Inc. According to this book, the cemetery you may be referring to no longer exists. It appears in two places in the book... First let me address the "Vanished Cemeteries" section which calls this the "First German United Evangelical Cemetery" or "Bosse Cemetery". It places the cemetery at the intersection of East Avenue and Dillon Street. This record also claims that it received burials from 1850 - 1877, which was before the date you address. The book claims that the cemetery was 2 acres owned by this congregation which later started the "Schwartz" or First United Evangelical Cemetery in 1877. It states that reinterments were made from the old plot into the new. This much said, we can now address their existing cemetery... First United Evangelical Cemetery "Schwartz" is listed in their protestant cemeteries section as being located at 6115 O'Donnell Street and in operation from 1877 to the present. The information mostly concerns itself with the establishment, price, etc. of the cemetery. However, it does state that the records of this cemetery are to be found at the Maryland Historical Society here in Baltimore. The word German was removed from the name of this cemetery in the WWII era due to anti-German sentiments, however it is alleged to have the inscription, "Gottsacher Derestend Ver. Ev. Germinde" over the entrance. They translate this to mean, "God's acre of the German Evangelical Church." This is only a few miles from my home, and I may be able to help you to look for a relative or two if you are far from Baltimore. Please email me if you'd like me to try.
