Hi Jane Carruthers was the third wife of John Ogier(married on Nov. 1, 1838). He was first married to a Elizabeth Hargest and then to an Elizabeth Smith. I have some information on Jane Carruthers' parents. Her father was Andrew Carruthers who emigrated from Scotland to Baltimore in 1819. He had a feed and flour business as well as a farm in Baltimore County (now the city). Her mother was Isabella Noble Carruthers died Sept 30, 1871 at the age of 82. I have a listing of about two hundred descendants of John Ogier and Jane Carruthers. You are correct, last names of friends were often used as middle names of children.
