He was born in the Bahamas in 1845, and came to Baltimore at a young age with a man named Henry Evans. He worked in the pineapple canning industry, and died in Baltimore in 1931. He married Mary Hooper (1848-1920) and had at least two children: H. Evans Smith and Robert Tynes Smith, Jr. I also found that there is a Robert Tynes Smith, III, b. 1909 who has a Ph.D. from George Washington University in mathematics. Anybody out there also working on this family? - Heather Blair
