Baltimore City at that time consisted of mostly wooden buildings, businesses and residences. I know there was a great fire in a depressed section of the City in May 1848 which made the newspapers for days because of the loss of homes and lives, mostly poor immigrants of German descent. Try checking old newspapers. Some are on line. Ancestry.com has some, though you have to pay. Good hunting.
