H. R. DAVENPORT (b ca 1841 - Bangkok, Thailand) was a physician, probably trained in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was living in 1870. He is shown in both the 1870 and 1880 Census as being born in Virginia, the native state of both of his parents, but is correctly shown in the 1850 United States Census as having been born in the East Indies, where his parents worked as Baptist missionaries: United States Census - 1850 Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, Between Pages Imprinted "368" and "369" 2 Dec 1850 Line 5, 428, 578, Frances DAVENPORT, age 30, Female, RE $4,000, born VA Line 6, 428, 578, Marie DAVENPORT, age 14, Female, born East Indies Line 7, 428, 578, Henry DAVENPORT, age 10, Male, born East Indies Line 8, 428, 578, William DAVENPORT, age 1, Male, born VA [Image 263 of 423 at the Ancestry.com presentation of Census data for Richmond, Henrico County, VA - 1850] * As can be seen from the above Census record the "H" in Dr. DAVENPORT's name is very likely "Henry". The "B" in his name might be "Benjamin", the name of one of his mother's brothers (Benjamin Eliscus ROPER). * Dr. B. H. R. DAVENPORT's parents were Rev. Robert Dulaney DAVENPORT (b Abt 1809 - VA, d 1848 - Alexandria, Rapides, LA) and Mary Frances Greenhow Roper DAVENPORT (b 8 Mar 1818 - Richmond, Henrico, VA, d 18 Jul 1896 - Baltimore, Baltimore, MD), his wife. Rev. Robert DAVENPORT and Mary Frances Greenhow ROPER were married on 8 Sep 1835 at Second Baptist Church, Richmond, VA. Mary Frances ROPER, was the daughter of Rev. David Roper (b 27 Sep 1792 - Charles City County, VA; d 28 Feb 1827 - Richmond, VA), a founder of Second Baptist Church and its first Pastor, and Mary Frances MILLER (b ca 1800; d 6 Sep 1844- Richmond, VA), his wife. Rev. Robert DAVENPORT attended Virginia Baptist Seminary (now University of Richmond). Rev. Robert and Mary Frances Roper DAVENPORT were subsequently Baptist missionaries in Siam (now Thailand), arriving in Bangkok on 21 Feb 1836. Rev. DAVENPORT imported the first printing machine into Bangkok, where he translated and printed the Bible, while his wife taught the antive girls in school. The DAVENPORTs returned to the United States in 1845, settling in Alexandria, Louisiana, where Robert DAVENPORT died three years later at the age of 39. By 1890, Dr. Davenport's mother seems to have returned to Baltimore. The 1890 Baltimore City Directory shows a Fanny R. Feudge, wid of J. S., at 1310 John Street, Baltimore, MD, and it is in Baltimore that she was buried.on 20 Jul 1896 at Louden Park Military Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore, MD. It is unclear to me just how long Dr. Davenport remained in White Haven. As we all know, the 1890 Census was lost. I did NOT find his family in White Haven in 1900. I do NOT know if he returned to Maryland when his mother moved back there, went elsewhere, or died before the 1900 Census. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT DR. DAVENPORT, OF BALTIMORE, INCLUDING WHERE HE MIGHT HAVE RECEIVED HIS MEDICAL TRAINING? AND DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY DESCENDENTS OF DR. DAVENPORT AND HIS WIFE FLORA WHO WERE POSSIBLY BORN IN LUZERNE COUNTY, PA, AFTER 1880? CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY FLORA'S SISTER, THE L. E. JONES (b ca 1854 - MD), WITH A SON NAMED VERNON JONES (b ca 1872 - MD), WHO WERE LIVING IN WHITE HAVEN IN 1880? ANY HELP YOU CAN RENDER IS MUCH APPRECIATED! For more information about Robert Dulaney DAVENPORT (b ca 1809 - VA; d 1848 - Alexandria, Rapides, LA), Mary Frances Greenhow Roper DAVENPORT (b 8 Mar 1818 - Richmond, Henrico, VA, d 18 Jul 1896 - Baltimore, Baltimore, MD) and her father Rev.
