    2. Hi Rick, My John H. is not, unfortunately, your John H. The dates are wrong. However, I have the Family History Center 1880 Census for the entire country at that time. I entered the name "John H. Mattern" and received two answers. One was my John Henry and one was a John Hanlan Mattern, also born in D.C. In the early 1900s a child died and they requested Baltimore papers to copy. Before 1880 the church most protestant Germans attended in D.C. was the Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church.
