Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Md/BaltimoreCity/3169 Surname: GREEN, COLE, COAL ------------------------- I am seeking information on NICHOLAS GREEN born abt 1740-1745 supposedly in Wales, England. He died probably in Jefferson Co., OH. He married TEMPERANCE COAL/COLE 14 October 1786 in Baltimore County (don't know if it was in the actual county or city). Temperance was born abt 1745 in Maryland and died 12 February 1827 probably in Jefferson Co. OH. In their son's records from Morgan Co., Ohio, her last name was spelled COAL so am unsure of the spelling. Their children: ANN b. 1762; SUSANNA b. 1771; ROBERT b. 6-7-1789; NANCY b.1790; GREENBERRY 4-5-1798; ELIZABETH . All of the children were supposedly born in Maryland except Greenberry who was born in Huntingdon Co.,PA. Sometime after his birth the family moved to Jefferson Co., Ohio. Greenberry and Robert ended up in Morgan Co., Ohio and lived there until they died. I have not been able to connect Temperance to any of the Cole/Coale/Coal lines in the Baltimore County area. However, I am sure she is related somehow. I believe she is related to the ROBERT COLE line (I am taking a shot in the dark as she had a son named Robert and with the custom of the time - and my family- they would have named one son after her father and one after his), however this only a presumption on my part. They were probably Quakers. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated. I do know their marriage record is in the state archives in Annapolis which states Baltimore, MD. James spent a major part of his career as a conductor for SP & other RR's in TX. I do not know his parents or siblings, but according to family lore, our Sanders were of German origin. In researching, I've found a baptismal record for a SANDERS child born within one day of my James. This was at St. James, which I understand served a German community, so it would not be surprising for names to be "Germanized" for church record: JOHAN HEINRICH CARL SANDERS b 2 January 1849 parents: JOHAN HEINRICH SANDERS & ELIZABETH ALLEN godparent: MARIA ANA URT >From the 1850 census for Baltimore City I found: HENRY SANDERS age 28 and ELIZABETH age 18 and a child WILLIAM H. 2 months. Same family??? 1860 census has another Baltimore family, ages & names a bit different, but ??? John H Sanders 40 Eliza A 32 Charles H 12 John T 9 George W 4 William J 4 Christopher C 1 James, Jonathan, Charles, and Elizabeth are prevalent given names among my Sanders. They were married in Baltimore around 1880. They were born around 1854 and 1856 repectively. They had sons Arthur Chew Meade, Harry Meade, Walter Meade and James William Meade. James William was a physician and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1909. They lived on Lawn Ave and on Barclay St. were they had a grocery. Any information would be helpful.

Relatives say that the Lenz who came over from Germany was Johanns. Perhaps John is an adaptation of the name Johanns. Scharf he has been a hard one for me to trace. I know he fought in the Civil War as a private in the 1st. Maryland L. Art'y, from Oct. 8, 1861-Mar. 31, 1863 at which time he deserted. In 1890 he was a clerk and either lived or worked at 917 N. Fulton Ave. Also have the 506 W. Baltimore St. address. He more than likely worked for his Fathers lumber mill or insurance co.. Pasted down though my family I have his wife as being one, W. Knight and his childern as Walter T., Howard, Ann, Julie, Lena, and Daisy Scharf. I hope this will help. He may have had more than one wife I do not know as I have not been to his family grave site nor do I know where it is in Md.
