    1. [MDBALT] Revolutionary officer John Smith of Harford County MD
    2. Scott Swanson
    3. I'd be grateful for any information about the family of Revolutionary war officer John Smith. Henry C. Peden Jr, Revolutionary Patriots of Harford County, Maryland, 1775-1783, gives some facts about Martha's husband John Smith. He was born 1747 and died 1832. He was Second Lieutenant of the 2nd Battalion, floying camp, Baltimore County MD, 15 July 1776; First Lieutenant, Third Regiment, 10 December 1776; Captain, Third Regiment, 1 January 1777; wounded at the Battle of Savannah, 8 October 1779; wounded and taken prisoner at Camden, 16 August 1780; transferred to the Fifth Regiment, 1 January 1781; Brevet Major, 30 September 1781; prisoner on parole till the close of the war; original member of the Society of the Cincinnati in Maryland. He married Martha Vancleave. Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you. 1. [MDBALT] Three Barnard Prestons of Baltimore/Harford County MD
    2. Scott Swanson
    3. Researchers with interests in the Preston family of Baltimore and Harford County MD have encountered a problem in that three Preston brothers all named sons Barnard within a few years of each other: 1) Barnard Preston, son of Daniel and Anne (Grafton) Preston, born 28 October 1753 ggg 2) Barnard Preston, son of Barnard and Sarah (Ruff) Preston, born 29 April 1754 ggg 3) Barnard Preston, son of James and Clemency (Taylor) Bond, born 2 August 1756 ggg Sorting them out has been difficult. It seems reasonably clear that Barnard son of James was the fellow who married Sarah Bond. There has been disagreement about the remaining two. Some have argued that Barnard Preston who married Mary Forwood and removed to Washington County PA was the son of Daniel and Anne (Grafton) Preston, some of Barnard and Sarah (Ruff) Preston. Some have argued that Barnard and Sarah (Ruff) Preston's son was the fellow who removed to Mason County KY. It's worth noting that Barnard Preston who married Mary Forewood alone of these three men named children Daniel and Anne. I have set out below the evidence that clearly identifies each of these three as I have found it, chiefly in Peden's "Early Harford Countians". I'd be awfully grateful to anyone who can supplement the information clearly identifying each of these men. Many thanks for your help, and best wishes to you. 3. In the 1783 tax list of Harford County MD Barnard Preston appears as the owner of the tract "Preston's Conquest". 3. Posted on: BaltimoreCity County Md. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Md/BaltimoreCity/13452 Surname: ------------------------- Bud, It certainly seems logical that Rosaline should be a Rust, but there are problems. GW Hall was married twice-the first wife, "Jennie F.", died in 1872, so she must have been the mother of Rosaline Rust Hall,b.1867. That Jennie most probably was Jennie NORWOOD, not RUST, because the 1870 Balt census has GW Hall in the same household with Wimsatts and a Norwood.Wife Jane Hall is listed as being 24 yrs of age, so must have been his first wife "Jennie" (also, my cousin's genealogy lists Jane Norwood as mother of Rosaline Rust Hall and a Wimsatt as the wife of her father, Mr.unknown Norwood.) I didn't know about the second wife, Jane (1855-1884)until I visited the cemetery last week and found her on the same headstone as GW and Jennie! Have no clue what her maiden name was, but she could not have been the mother of Rosaline Rust Hall-she would have been too young. How puzzling! do you have a Norwood or Wimsatt/Rust connection? Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Md/BaltimoreCity/13450 Surname: Duncan, Hall, Norwood, Wimsatt ------------------------- My grandmother's name was Rosaline Rust Hall. She was born in Baltimore in 1867 and died in 1927 in Baltimore. Her husband was John Hugh Roy Duncan and they were married at Trinity Prot Epis Church in 1897. We don't know where the Rust name came from. Her parents were George Washington Hall,b.1840 in NC, married Jennie F.?, (1845-1872). In the 1870 Balt.census, George and Jane (Jennie) are living in ward 3 with some elderly Wimsatts and a Norwood. Family tradition is that Jennie's maiden name was Norwood. and that her father married a Wimsatt. The question is why would George and Jennie Hall name their first daughter Rosaline RUST Hall?
