The Nassau Guardian February 7, 1931 OBITUARY ROBERT TYNES SMITH We learn with deep regret that news received by cable yesterday, by Mr. W. C. E. Johnson, of the death on this 4th instant of Mr. Robert Tynes Smith, late and last President of the J. S. Johnson Co. of this date at his home at 344 Roland Park, Baltimore, Md. Born at Harbour Island in 1845 Mr. Smith was brought up at Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera. Becoming interested as a lad in the pineapple industry, of which Eleuthera was the centre in those days, he left the Bahamas and lived in Baltimore, where for many years he was in the commission merchants firm of Smith and Wicks which handled consignments of Bahamas Pineapple for the local growers. He afterwards established a can making business known as the R. Tynes Smith Can Co. of Baltimore. Later, after selling out his plant and business to the American Can Co. he took an active interest in the J. S. Johnson Co. and came out to Nassau every summer during the pineapple canning months and also every winter. When he became President of the company eventually and took a very active interest in the pineapple industry generally doing much to assist and encourage planters when the crops fell off and making every effort to stimulate the industry. After the closing down of the J. S. Johnson Co. factory Mr. Smith continued to spend his winters in Nassau and was last here in 1928 when his health failed and he was forced to shorten his stay and return to Baltimore. He would have been 86 years old next month had he lived. Mr. Smith married Miss Mary Hooper of the Woodberry Duck Company of Baltimore and his wife came to Nassau with him for many years until her death. He leaves three sons, two brothers, two sisters and a largo number of grandchildren and other relatives both in the Bahamas and in Baltimore. The death of this old and valued friend of the colony severs another link with the past - we might almost say, with Eleuthera in mind, the glorious past. One can well imagine, the dreams and aspirations of a serious minded youth of the fifties, when Eleuthera was one vast flourishing pineapple plantation, standing on the shore at Governor's Harbour watching the cargoes on pineapples being shipped away in big schooners to the outside world, then so very remot. Small wonder that he longed to go and eventually did go forth on one of those very schooners to seek what the outside world hold for a boy with untiring ambition. Never, however, did he get very far from pineapples. His native land was associated with all his dreams, and as he prospered so he desired the Bahamas to prosper and nobody worked harder to help their pineapple industry. he was a true son of the soil, inspired by the higher patriotism which so many of us fail to reach. Although he had retired from active business for some years Mr. Smith's affection for the colony of his birth still brought him to Nassau for annual visits and his kindly greeting and cheery smile for everyone of his acquaintance -- -and his friends were many in the Bahamas -- have been greatly missed In the past few years. He lived to a ripe old age and was highly esteemed and respected by all who knew him to the end. To his relatives in Baltimore and at Governor's Harbour we extend our sympathy.
I am going to be in the Baltimore area on Friday and Saturday and would like to find a good library to get some research done. I have heard the name Enoch Pratt Free Library mentioned several times. Is that a good place to research? Would they have copies of published parish records? Abstracted Baltimore County deeds, wills, etc that have been published? I am looking for abstracted records before 1750 for Baltimore County. Thanks Bob Metheny
Hi Phil, This is so exciting. My 3rd greatgrandfather was also Bernard Henry Fenhagen. My second g-grandfather was Edward. Edward was born Novemer 27, 1821 in Balto. and died October 20, 1892 in St. Mary's County, MD. He and his wife Jane Elizabeth Norris are buried at St. Nicholas RCC in St. M.C., that is the Patuxent Navel Base now. My great grandfather was Annie Elizabeth (Lizzie)'s brother John Charles Fenhagen who married Mary (Mollie) Cullison. Their daughter Blanche Louise Fenhagen married Roger Elias Morgan also of St. M.C. The came to Balto. in the early 1900's. I don't have anything on Maria except she was born about August 1878, but I do have some things on her siblings. Most of my research has been St. M.C. on the Fenhagen's, Morgan's and Cullison's. I have Bernard Henry's father as Bernard Von hagen born in Germany in 1765. Their son Bernard Henry born In (Oldenberg) ?, Germany married Susanna Cercilla (Cecil) in Baltimore on January 29, 1818 at St. Patrick's RCC. I would love to share anything I have. Looking forward to hearing from you, and I have marriage, deaths and census books up to 1920. Dee MorganGochnauer Lutherville, MD I just looked up Peter and Maria in the St M.C. census and found them & their 9 children. I see that Peter came from NY. In the death book it looks like Maria died July 4, 1920 and is buried near her mother at St. Nicholas. It looks like Peter died in 1959 and is buried next to Eleanor F. at Holy Face Catholic, is this a second wife?

Hi I have a copy of the insprictions in the Ogier Family Bible. I can make a copy of this information and send it to you. Please provide a mailing address. There is much information about John Ogier's family and the Carruthers. As I stated before, John Ogier was married three times; first to a Elizabeth Hargest, then to an Elizabeth Smith, and then to Jane Carruthers. JIM
Thank you for your reply. I too have Andrew Carruthers, 1788-1880, native of Scotland. Except, I must have one of the other wives, Jane, 1786-1834. I suspect they were a couple arriving from Scotland as I have a marriage date of before 1817 and a first child, Peter born in 1817. Then a Jane, 1819, Ellen 10/14/1821, and Isabella 1824. So, if you can tell me what is going on with the different data, I'd appreciate it. My research came from my mother in law's first cousin whose avocation is genealogy. I have not given his material a "stress test" so to speak. Thanks, Kathy
Looking for information on Aquila Thomas H. Bond b. 2 Jan 1808 MD married 6 Sep 1832 East City Station Methodist Church Baltimore, MD to Mary Stain b. 25 Dec 1815 MD. The only child I have confirmed is Aquilla John Samuel b. 11 Feb 1837. Other possible children could have been named John or Thomas. Aquila Thomas H. Bond did not always go by his first name. Hi Jane Carruthers was the third wife of John Ogier(married on Nov. 1, 1838). He was first married to a Elizabeth Hargest and then to an Elizabeth Smith. I have some information on Jane Carruthers' parents. Her father was Andrew Carruthers who emigrated from Scotland to Baltimore in 1819. He had a feed and flour business as well as a farm in Baltimore County (now the city). Her mother was Isabella Noble Carruthers died Sept 30, 1871 at the age of 82. I have a listing of about two hundred descendants of John Ogier and Jane Carruthers. You are correct, last names of friends were often used as middle names of children. If you would like additional information, let me know. Jim Hargest
My great uncle -- Harry Edgar Scharf -- married a Tilla Sedicum. He died in Aug 1934 at the age of 44. Is Tilla perhaps related to your Amanda?
Yes there was a cemetery across from Clifton Park on Belair Rd. It was an African-American one and dated back before the turn of the century. It was bordered by Belair Rd.on the West, Cliftmont Ave. on the North, Elmily Ave. on the South and Edison Hwy on the East. I lived on Cliftmont from 1939 until 1953. Two Guys was built after 1955. I was told by my mother that all remains that could be found were removed, to where I don't know. The city should have a record of the whereabouts of the remains. Hope this helps.. It was not Holy Redeemer Cemetry, That was about 15 or 20 blocks fruther out Belair Rd.
