According to the Archdiocese, there was a St. Joseph Parish that could have served the area you are looking for. It was at Howard and Barr--I have not located Barr. Those records are currently held at Holy Cross parish. In addition, the Sulpicians had a chapel (probably on Paca Street or there abouts) where there were marriages and baptisms. These records are in the Archdiocesan archives and I would think at Annapolis as well. The Archdiocese still does not have a microfilm reader at their new location, but if you are in Baltimore, I was told that the MD Historical Society also has a full set of the microfilmed records

I also tried the Archdiocese's web site while trying to come up with that name last night. The search program will only come up with a parish if you know the street. They used to supply a list of all parishes, opened or closed. I am hoping to get into the parish records in the next week or so and intend to mention this to the archivist. Hopefullly, this is some temporary problem

It still shows a list of closed parishes; but not the current ones. But they do have a search for a parish based on the name or location. Another source is http://www.cyndislist.com/md.htm#Religion. I used mappoint.msn.com to search where my families address was located and used the power of deduction in figuring out which parish they attended. I was right and found out they had attended St. Agnes on Old Frederick Road! Good Luck, Tina

First, Buren Street is not on current maps, so I can't help there. the Dolphin St address and the McMechin address are near the Bolton Hill area. There is a Catholic Church there whose name completely escapes me although I can see the darned thing! Corpus Christi might be it. The Division Street address is farther west. I would think that old Immaculate Conception would be your best bet. Their records begin in the early 1850's. There is also an Immaculate onception in Towson, Baltimore County, so don't get confused. The one you want is in the NW part of the city.

H. R. DAVENPORT (b ca 1841 - Bangkok, Thailand) was a physician, probably trained in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was living in 1870. He is shown in both the 1870 and 1880 Census as being born in Virginia, the native state of both of his parents, but is correctly shown in the 1850 United States Census as having been born in the East Indies, where his parents worked as Baptist missionaries: United States Census - 1850 Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia, Between Pages Imprinted "368" and "369" 2 Dec 1850 Line 5, 428, 578, Frances DAVENPORT, age 30, Female, RE $4,000, born VA Line 6, 428, 578, Marie DAVENPORT, age 14, Female, born East Indies Line 7, 428, 578, Henry DAVENPORT, age 10, Male, born East Indies Line 8, 428, 578, William DAVENPORT, age 1, Male, born VA [Image 263 of 423 at the Ancestry.com presentation of Census data for Richmond, Henrico County, VA - 1850] * As can be seen from the above Census record the "H" in Dr. DAVENPORT's name is very likely "Henry". The "B" in his name might be "Benjamin", the name of one of his mother's brothers (Benjamin Eliscus ROPER). * Dr. B. H. R. DAVENPORT's parents were Rev. Robert Dulaney DAVENPORT (b Abt 1809 - VA, d 1848 - Alexandria, Rapides, LA) and Mary Frances Greenhow Roper DAVENPORT (b 8 Mar 1818 - Richmond, Henrico, VA, d 18 Jul 1896 - Baltimore, Baltimore, MD), his wife. Rev. Robert DAVENPORT and Mary Frances Greenhow ROPER were married on 8 Sep 1835 at Second Baptist Church, Richmond, VA. Mary Frances ROPER, was the daughter of Rev. David Roper (b 27 Sep 1792 - Charles City County, VA; d 28 Feb 1827 - Richmond, VA), a founder of Second Baptist Church and its first Pastor, and Mary Frances MILLER (b ca 1800; d 6 Sep 1844- Richmond, VA), his wife. Rev. Robert DAVENPORT attended Virginia Baptist Seminary (now University of Richmond). Rev. Robert and Mary Frances Roper DAVENPORT were subsequently Baptist missionaries in Siam (now Thailand), arriving in Bangkok on 21 Feb 1836. Rev. DAVENPORT imported the first printing machine into Bangkok, where he translated and printed the Bible, while his wife taught the antive girls in school. The DAVENPORTs returned to the United States in 1845, settling in Alexandria, Louisiana, where Robert DAVENPORT died three years later at the age of 39. By 1890, Dr. Davenport's mother seems to have returned to Baltimore. The 1890 Baltimore City Directory shows a Fanny R. Feudge, wid of J. S., at 1310 John Street, Baltimore, MD, and it is in Baltimore that she was buried.on 20 Jul 1896 at Louden Park Military Cemetery, Baltimore, Baltimore, MD. It is unclear to me just how long Dr. Davenport remained in White Haven. As we all know, the 1890 Census was lost. I did NOT find his family in White Haven in 1900. I do NOT know if he returned to Maryland when his mother moved back there, went elsewhere, or died before the 1900 Census. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT DR. DAVENPORT, OF BALTIMORE, INCLUDING WHERE HE MIGHT HAVE RECEIVED HIS MEDICAL TRAINING? AND DOES ANYONE KNOW OF ANY DESCENDENTS OF DR. DAVENPORT AND HIS WIFE FLORA WHO WERE POSSIBLY BORN IN LUZERNE COUNTY, PA, AFTER 1880? CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY FLORA'S SISTER, THE L. E. I am presuming that this is St. Michael's on Wolfe Street. the neighboring Irish parish, St. Patrick's had a cemetery. the land was purchased by St. Michaels and eventually the remains were removed to other cemeteries. Most went to New Cathedral Cemetery. Others to Holy Cross or New Redeemer. Many families removed the remains to their new family plots, but others are in large general sections. The parents were German and rigidly Catholic, so I assume their child would have been buried in "hallowed ground" in a Catholic Cemetery if such existed at the time. I've noticed that the death records for that parish don't begin until 1860, according to the film description of the parish microfilm at Maryland State Archives. Any help suggesting places to look (and where to find those records -- I live in another state) would be much appreciated. Thanks! D.
