    3. I hope someone has the answer to your question. I have a g, grandmother (at least I think she is mine). In the 1880 WV census her father is listed as white, the "mother" is listed as other and by her maiden name; indicating they were not married but the children are all listed with the father's surname. "Wife" and children were listed in the census record as mulatto. I am like you; who decided the race? My grandmother told me "one of your g, grandmothers was Indian" (Native American). I found all the other great grandmothers; none would have had mixed blood so my question would be; was this g, grandmother listed as mulatto because she had Native American blood or some other mix? It is obvious that something was going on since the mother did not carry the same surname as the father and the children. I just want to find information for this g, grandmother and I really don't care how she was classified race wise but it is hard to find answers to some questions. ----- Original Message ----- From: <SuJoLy@aol.com> To: <mdallega@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 25, 2007 10:32 PM Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] Draft Reg. Card I have a question about WW registration cards. On a WWI registration card "John Thomas SR" is listed as negro. On a WWII registration card, "John Thomas JR" is listed as white. Did the person doing the registration look at the person registering and decide his race, or did the person who appeared to register state his race? SR was not negro, as far as I know, but would have had a very dark complexion, as evident in the family line. Or maybe this is just a mistake in the registration cards? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to MDALLEGA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
