Chere - I do a lot of research in English censuses and records. F. S. is a common abbreviation for "female servant" M. S. for "male servant" These were usually servants in the house, maids, cooks, footmen, etc. I have seen them so listed as young as 10 and up to elderly. If they were farm laborers they are usually listed as ag (agricultural) laborer or just laborer, and were sometimes female as well as male working in the fields. Ind., short for "Independent" means the person is of independent means, well-enough off to not have a working occupation. Indicates some wealth, from business or inheritance. Rather unusual for a 2-year-old, but would still indicate he had a separate means of support.
