Piedmont Herald, Friday 31 January 1908: "John William Dailey, aged 33 years, of Borden Shaft, Md., son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dailey, of Franklin, was killed by a fall of rock in the Fahey Coal Mine at Franklin, Saturday last, 25 January 1908, while he was loading his last car. He was working with Messrs. Joseph Stowell and John E. Franklin at the time the accident occurred. While his two companions went after assistance to remove the rock from his body, another rock fell and he was dead when help arrived. Mr. Dailey is survived by a wife and three children, who reside at Borden Shaft, and his parents and five brothers, Messrs. Frank, Lloyd, George, Patrick and Thomas; and two sisters, Misses Josephine and Mary Dailey. Funeral services were held at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, Monday 27 January 1908 with Requiem High Mass, Rev. Charles Heath officiating. Interment was made in the parish cemetery." JOHN W DAILY KILLED IN MINE - The Evening Times; Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD - January 27, 1908, pg 2, col 3 - Lonaconing Md, Jan 27 John W Dailey, son of Mr and Mrs. Michael Dailey of Franklin was instantly killed in Fahey's mine by a fall of rock at about 8 p.m. Friday night. Mr. Dailey, Joseph Stone and John Franklin were loading the last car of the shift, when apiece of rock fell from the roof, striking Mr. Dailey on the head and crushed him to the ground. Stone and Franklin fled for their lives and gave the alarm. When assistance came it was found that another piece of rock had fallen on the first. When the unfortunate man was released, it was found that he was dead. The body was taken to the residence of Michael Dailey in Franklin where deceased had been boarding. The coroner came up from Cumberland and made inquiry as to the cause of death, but did not deem it necessary to summon a jury. Deceased is survived by his wife and three very young children, who reside at Borden Shaft. His father and mother and brothers, Frank at Westernport; Lloyd, George, Patrick and Thomas and sisters, Annie Josephine and Mary. The funeral took place this morning with a solemn requiem mass at the Catholic church. Father Heath officiating. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Westernport.
